Sprinting out of Sais by Mike Danneman
Via Flickr:
An eastbound Santa Fe piggyback train curves out of Sais, New Mexico, and is about to cross Bridge 874.2 and enter Abo Canyon on the morning of May 23, 1991. The train is powered by a pair of GE B40-8Ws, an EMD GP60M and a GE B40-8. Behind the locomotives is Santa Fe Research and Test Car No. 83, built by Pullman in 1914 as baggage-buffet-library car No. 1338, the “San Juan,” and was a car with several other incarnations before being assigned No. 83 in 1973.

CONFESSIONS 18
Sometimes we go places expecting them to be somewhere and sometime else, and so often they turn out otherwise. There are many strange destinations in Gor. Strangest of all are those we expect to be the same as they once were.
My Master surprised me with a journey yesterday. He told me to dress warmly, which is no easy feat to a slave girl whose entire wardrobe consists of silk ribbons or silk strings. I went with the ribbons. I was, as one would expect, underdressed.
This became even more the case when we arrived at our destination, Sais, and my Master, in His displeasure with my clothes, cut some of them off and fed some to a verr. As ingenious as His solutions are, He could not make Sais different from what it is.
Sais has seen better days. After a casual encounter with a passing Master, we were led into the dilapidated village by a peculiar slave girl. She had a pet verr, which was odd on many levels, and also spoke in a third person way that was even more bizarre than “this girl” does. Namely, she used her full name, like a vain Ubar might, and no articles, like a caveman might. The effect added to how perplexing the village was.
My Master received a gift of a honey jar from her, literally, and made polite conversation. He was in a grandiloquent mood, which is always delightful, as He has a magnificent way with words. He seemed especially interested in my dreams, which tend to be very weird and vivid.
After the slave girl, we entertained a Free Woman seamstress. My Master used the opportunity to praise my body considerably, which was nice, by talking of clothes that the woman might make me. This was all during a time at an inn where urts were lurking nearby.
That was kind of symbolic of the entire experience; my Master making the best of a pestilential situation. Some may think, at first glance, that He is grumpy. Perhaps even He does. But He is one of the most positive minded Men I’ve ever encountered, with both a determination and an aptitude for making something special out of rude material.
As much as He tried to make it otherwise, Sais was still a sow’s ear. I believe He wanted to give me one of the great adventures that He and i discussed Him having with Daisy. It was great, only in that His presence made it so.
That’s the best we can do with the destinations in our lives. They are never just what we expect, and with that comes a necessary element of disappointment. To paraphrase the old saying of Vosk River mercenaries, “the first casualty is always the plan.” Yet so long as we accept the happiness that does exist, we lose nothing at all by losing our expectations, except for illusions.
I have no illusions about the man my Master is. He has shown that He cares for me greatly. I hope that He sees the same quality in me. So long as He is with me, no matter where we go, we wind up where we want to be.

nothing has been more important to my being queer than when i went to my first pride parade, got seperated from my group, had a panic attack about it and was sitting on the side of the road holding a tiny genderfluid flag and freaking out. then this six foot five drag queen in four inch heels appeared from literally nowhere and sat down next to me. i, this scared-shitless trans bi kid at pride for the first time, very nervously told her she looked pretty and i told her my name and that i got lost and didn't feel like i should be at pride and she held my hand and said "oh, honey, everybody deserves to be here, especially you. pride is for everybody who's ever gotten lost, who's been scared of who they are or where they are. you think we never been scared before? pride's for you, honey, because you're scared. you don't have to be proud right now, but you're gonna be one day, honey, i'm sure of it."
i found my group soon after that and i never saw that queen again but to this day i am convinced i met an angel.
so yeah. pride is for you. pride is for all of us.
