Joohyung Getting Sick On Tour

Read Act 2: Sweet Mirage Japan Tour to get a brief introduction to what happened to Joohyung during Saitama day 2.

It was around 10pm and the concert was nearly over and finally the group was changing into their encore outfits to perform the last few songs they had.

“Here’s your skirt for tonight.” One of Joohyung’s main stylist (Sooyoung) handled over Joohyung’s black mini skirt. “Thanks.” Joohyung mumbled, as she got the skirt and was about to lift her left leg in she suddenly got lightheaded with all the rushing and kinda lost balanced. “Oh my, are you ok?” Sooyoung quickly got a hold of her. “Yeah, yeah I’m fine I just lost my balance a bit.” Joohyung laughed it off before quickly putting on her skirt. Sooyoung wasn’t fully convinced but she couldn’t think about it too much since they are still in a concert rushed setting.

“Make sure to keep an eye on Joohyung-ie.” Sooyoung warned Eunha who is Joohyung’s manager. Eunha hummed and took Joohyung and the boys back out to the side of the stage. She kept Sooyoung’s word and looked at Joohyung closely. Joohyung was looking a bit on the paler side on her face and breathing a bit heavier. “Joohyung to do need some water before going on?” Eunha asked, with a bottled water in her hand. Joohyung shook her head ‘no’, “thank you though. I’ll drink some water while we’re closing.”

Joohyung gave Eunha a fake smile before stepping out to the main stage. As she was performing ‘Blue Spring’ the lights sudden became brighter and hotter above Joohyung, she tried shaking it off and even placed her head down on hands which were holding onto the mic. In moas eyes it just looks like Joohyung got a bit emotional and is trying to hide her tears when in reality Joohyung was just trying to hold herself up a bit longer.

Finally the concert ended and everyone was heading to their hotel rooms. Joohyung felt like she can knock out at any second and was even falling asleep standing up in the elevator. “Be careful you’re going to fall.” Beomgyu laughed, as he held Joohyung close to him. “I’m just so tired.” Joohyung mumbled into his chest. Soon the elevator doors opened and Beomgyu pulled Joohyung along with him to their room. As Beomgyu was holding Joohyung close he felt her skin to be a bit hotter than usual, so to prevent Joohyung was getting sick he guided her to the restroom and sat her down on the toilet to help her wash up.

Beomgyu washed her face, brush her teeth, applied her skincare, and finally got her changed into her pajamas which was just one of his shirts and her shorts. Joohyung immediately knocked out once she hit the shared bed, Beomgyu placed the back of his hand on Joohyung’s forehead. “You’ve gotten warmer.” Beomgyu went to get a clean small towel from the restroom and ran it through cold water before ringing it fully out and folding it nicely. He then made his way out of the restroom and back to Joohyung’s side, “here.” Beomgyu placed it on Joohyung’s forehead hoping that would fix her little fever.

He carrying on his night doing his routine before quickly heading into bed with Joohyung and holding her close, “goodnight Jooie. Feel better.” Beomgyu kissed her cheek before snuggling into her neck.

2:10AM

Joohyung woke up to feeling stomach pain so she slowly got up and took the little towel off her forehead, and placed it on the side table before getting up and walking to the restroom. Suddenly, everything she ate the day before came up and out. Joohyung hated throwing up and wanted to stop but her own body wouldn’t let her.

On the main bedroom area Beomgyu started waking up with the noises coming from the restroom, and he started feeling around next to him where Joohyung was at and felt it empty. He got up pretty fast but still with his eyes pretty much close, Beomgyu made his way over to where Joohyung was at. “Noona?!” He was surprised seeing Joohyung’s head in the toilet throwing up. Beomgyu started rubbing her back and holding her hair back along with saying ‘everything going to be ok’.

After a while Joohyung was finally able to stop and actually breath, but now her body was sore from crouching and then clenching her stomach. “Go back and lay on the bed and I’ll go and get you some medicine from the convenience store.” Beomgyu helped Joohyung clean up and on to the bed.

It only took Beomgyu about 20 minutes to get everything and come back, luckily the location of the hotel and right near everything. “Look,” Beomgyu came to sit on Joohyung’s side of the bed with the convenience store bag ready to show her what he got. “I got you some medicine, teas for digestion and for your immune system, and a new toothbrush so you can throw your another one away. I even got the Sanrio one because I think you’ll like it more.” He chuckled, while handing her the cute toothbrush. Joohyung smile while looking at him and back at the toothbrush. “Thank you, puppy.” Joohyung gently caressed Beomgyu’s cheek making him lean in to her lovingly touches. “I love you Jooie~”

The Next Day/Saitama Day 2

Joohyung was the last one to wake up as Beomgyu insisted the staff wake her up on a later time since she didn’t sleep that well last night. Of course everyone knew what was going on with Joohyung, as Beomgyu informed everyone through next that Joohyung wasn’t feeling well and that she did end up throwing up and having a little fever. The members all went to see her and they were all quite worried seeing her pale on the bed.

“Noona~” Kai wrapped his body around her like a little child missing their mother which made Joohyung laugh whole hugging him. “Why are you acting like this?” She lightly ruffled his bed hair. “I’m just a bit worried.” He answered, still holding her. “I’m fine though.” Joohyung reassured Kai and everyone. “But you still look a bit pale. Maybe you should sit out tonight.” The main manger of txt asked also worried with Joohyung’s state. “That’s crazy I can’t sit out!” Joohyung sat up. “I’m fine I promise. I can do this.” Joohyung gave their manager a stern look. She couldn’t disappoint their moas by not showing up just because she felt a little sick, moas spent their hard earn money into them and into this moment just to see them. Their manager sighed, “fine. But the second I see that you’re unwell I’m pulling you out Joohyung. Your health is our priority and it should be yours too.” He gave her his final words.

The staff help ordering their breakfast and brought their personal medic to run a covid test on Joohyung just make sure. Fortunately, it was negative but the medic said that it could be exhaustion so Joohyung had to really watch out about that and too not go as hard tonight as she usually does. Along with ‘if you lightheaded, dizziness, or you feel like you’re going to faint call it a day and just rest because you’re just going to hurt yourself more’. Joohyung thanked the medic and both headed out their separate ways.

“Noona we ordered you a light breakfast just in case your stomach was still weak from last night.” Taehyun sat Joohyung’s breakfast in front of her. “Thank you Taehyun-ie.” Joohyung smiled, as she saw a bowl of stew with some fruits in a cup waiting for her. While the guys were already half way through their breakfast they started seeing Joohyung littler and littler bites of her food until eventually just started moving the spoon around the stew, or the fork playing with the freshly cut fruit. “Are you ok?” Yeonjun rubbed her back. Joohyung hummed, “I have a weak stomach right now, but I’m fine.” Yeonjun nodded understanding Joohyung. “I’ll make you more tea so the food can go down smoother.” Yeonjun got up and grabbed a mug and got one of the teas Beomgyu brought last night and started making it. Not long after Yeonjun brought it back to the table in front of Joohyung. “Here you go noona.” Joohyung placed her phone down and set her eyes on the mug with the tea’s aroma hitting her nose. “Thank you so much junnie-ah.” Joohyung patted Yeonjun’s head earning a smile and a slight blush from him.

Joohyung honestly wanted to cry with how much the members are taking care of her even if it’s something minor. She really couldn’t ask for anything better than them. They are her everything.

Concert Time

“We have make sure we’re watching Joohyung from the corner of our eyes ok. If you see her start loosing balance just hold her a bit see if she’s ok. Ok?” Yeonjun whispered to the rest of the members while Joohyung was getting mic up. All the members agreed and started doing their little stretches before the screen in front of them moved up. As Joohyung was about to walk into her position Kai stopped her, “go easy ok noona.” He rubbed her shoulder. “I’ll try.” Joohyung held his hand and placed a kiss on the back of it.

Joohyung got into her position and as the screen was lifting she placed her stage face on and prayed that everything will work out the way she wants it. She even made her makeup/hair team create a cute appearance so it will distract moas from thinking she looks sick, hopefully the blush will come through and give her color for her pale sick skin.

Honestly, Joohyung was holding it together was actually smiling and having fun. She didn’t know if it was the adrenaline or the medicine she took awhile ago, but of course not everything lasts. It wasn’t even half through the concert but during their second ment Joohyung started to breathe heavy, and it felt like she couldn’t even catch her breathe. So she started slowly walking behind the members as they were talking to moas trying to walk it off and she was even waving at moas that were behind them. Soobin took notice of Joohyung’s behavior and grabbed a towel and dumped some water on it, and walk to where Joohyung was and placed it around her neck. It was to cool her off without putting some really cold and probably making it worse.

As Yeonjun was finishing the conversation and before going to the next set of songs Soobin whispered to the members to now keep a closer eye on Joohyung because she’s starting to feel it.

It was ‘Can’t You See Me’ that it hit Joohyung a little. But if you were in the audience you wouldn’t even know that she was struggling. The red lights give it a seductive feel and with Joohyung’s half close lids it looks like she giving you and seductive siren look. But in reality the light were harsh on her eyes and making her feel hotter and a bit dizzy.

All the way from ‘I Know I Love You’ to ‘Magic’ Joohyung didn’t move a lot. She was pretty much just walking around singing to moas and the camera. Joohyung really couldn’t run around the stage or even jump with moas like she would do in previous concerts. She was able to do the Magic dance break part without missing a step or falling over, but it was dance unit part where you really saw her miss place her feet due her getting a bit dizzy. Yeonjun quickly held her and both continued smoothly.

This is where you really see Joohyung sickness and some moas already see that Joohyung is unwell during ‘Opening Sequence’. Joohyung had to get up and down from the floor and hit all the moves which wasn’t really agreeing with her stomach a lot. As they move to the near to the end of the song where they had to get on the floor one last time and Taehyun has he moment. Joohyung finally got what felt like two second to try to recollect herself and push through, but she opened her eyes she saw that she missed her cue in front of everyone.

Usually mistakes aren’t bad in anyway mostly if your in a practice room setting or rehearsing on stage, but in Joohyung eyes mistakes when their not intended on stages like these hurt her pride. Especially with someone that’s a perfectionist like her. She basically felt embarrassed and that didn’t go well with her upset stomach again. As they got to they ending pose and Joohyung saw moas worried faces the rush of water came up and Joohyung placed her had on her mouth and turned around quickly. The members moved their mics away from their mouths so everyone wouldn’t hear them. Yeonjun encourage Joohyung to just throw up right then and there, but Joohyung couldn’t do it and it was hurting her more. Beomgyu saw the tears and quickly helped her get off stage and into the hands of the medics that were waiting on the side. “Take care of her, please.” Beomgyu watched with sadden eyes, as they took her away from him in a rush.

Backstage

The medics had a futon in one of the green rooms ready just in case something like this would happen. “Lay her on her side just in case she does vomit.” The female medic instructed, and just as she finished speaking and they got Joohyung on her side she throws up water and bits of what she ate before. They quickly clean her up and start taking off her shoes and some of her stage outfit just so she can cool down. “Here, place the oxygen mask on her.” As they placed the mask over her mouth and nose another medic went to check on on her pupils to see if they’re dilated. “Her pupils are a bit dilated, but not much which is pretty good.” Which means Joohyung’s body wasn’t completely in the exhausted stage. “Let’s get an IV in her arm to hydrate her.” They were able to get her to sit up couch and have an IV in her arm.

Joohyung started to have tears flowing down from her eyes, but she didn’t make a sound indicating that she was crying. When the staff saw her looking at the tv that was monitoring the concert with eyes full of tears, they of course felt so bad for her because they know much performing means to her. “Hey, it’s ok to feel sick and make a little mistake. They would understand Joohyung.” Minseok (one of there staff) tried making Joohyung feel better. Joohyung sniffled and shook her head ‘no’, “but they worked so hard to see us and they deserved to see a performance with no mistakes and have no worries.” Joohyung cried. “And now they have to see an incomplete stage with the thought of a messing member in the back of their heads.” All Minseok could do was to hug her and have a shoulder for her to cry on.

“I talked to the medics and then said that it wouldn’t be best for you to continue performing right now.” Eunha came into the green room to inform Joohyung. “But what about-“

“No Joohyung. I’m sorry but I can’t let you hurt yourself further.” Eunha sternly talked to Joohyung. “Can I at least perform my solo stages for them? I can’t let me down Eunha.” Joohyung looked desperate to perform which hurt Eunha to see her like this. “Joohyung you can’t.”

“Please Eunha let me perform. Let me perform this and I won’t ever do this again I promise.” Joohyung plead to Eunha. Eunha knew it wasn’t right but she saw the hunger in Joohyung’s eyes. The hunger to go on stage, it was the same look Joohyung had a couple years ago during her trainee days. Eunha let out a heavy sigh, “Bae Joohyung this is and will be the final time this will ever happen, ok? I don’t care how minor your sickness is you will never do this again and you will stay resting the next time you feel one ounce of sickness, and this goes for them too.” Eunha pointed at the screen that showed the another five singing and dancing.

“I promise.”

Concert Time After Joohyung Left/Backstage

After explaining that Joohyung wouldn’t be joining them for a couple of songs they move on to one of their slower songs, ‘Anti-Romantic’. It felt weird seeing an empty spot in the middle of the stage and they were all zoning out until they heard no one singing. Beomgyu immediately took all of Joohyung’s lines causing moas to ‘ah’ at how quick Beomgyu was able to pick up Joohyung’s lines. They ultimately felt incomplete.

The members kept on feeling that until Joohyung’s VCR started playing as they got backstage to change. “Is Joohyung going back on stage?!”

“What happened to her?”

“Is she ok Eunha?”

Of course their concern about their noona right away. “Medics said that she was going to hit the stage of exhaustion, but luckily she didn’t.” The boys sighed in relief. “They did stick an IV in her arm to hydrate her body and she did cry obviously, but the crying was mostly because of her performance perfectionism got to her pretty bad.” Eunha explained further. “She really wants to perform her solo stages, so I’m only letting this one thing to do this then she immediately sitting down and getting rest. I don’t think I will let it slide with you guys too, I already warned Joohyung about it.” Eunha gave her final words before going back to Joohyung.

“I knew it got to her.” Yeonjun sighed, as placed his ear-ins over her ears. “You could by the look in her eyes. She was embarrassed, but it wasn’t her fault.” Soobin was sad about the whole situation. “I wish she didn’t have to go through this.” Taehyun hated seeing Joohyung this distressed.

All their heads lift when they heard moas cheer loudly, they saw Joohyung standing on stage like nothing happen. “No matter in sickness she still looks so pretty.” Beomgyu smiled at the tv. “Noona always glows on stage.” Kai replied, watching her start the song.

Unfortunately, the the boys couldn’t cross paths with Joohyung as she had to go backstage again while they were already behind the screens again ready to perform the final half of the concert. This time Beomgyu had to light his own rose, and it felt weird again not having Joohyung by their sides. It just meant that they had to hit the moves just as hard as her and fill in her roles. They got through all songs and each member had a chance to sing Joohyung’s lines which was a bit hard to remember who was going to sing her lines in each song in such a short amount of time, but they got it.

As they ran backstage to change into their finally outfit for the encore they saw Joohyung there already changed with the tour shirt on and her makeup redone. “You’re going to do the encore with us?” Kai asked, with bright eyes. Joohyung nodded, “I feel about 5x times better with the IV they gave me plus we don’t dance during the encore stages, and I want to close this concert with you guys.” The members really admire Joohyung and her dedication to with the group and perform for moa.

Moas were so happy to see Joohyung on stage again with the group. It really shows them how much there’s a missing piece whenever a member isn’t there.

As Joohyung was saying her goodbye speech she got emotional again with the support moas were giving her, and how even though she felt like she wasn’t giving her best it was enough for moas. “I’ll make sure to come back healthy and give you a even better show than I did tonight.” Joohyung bowed before signing tubatu off for the night.

Yahoo Japan/Josei Jishin Interview July 4th 2023

Up until now, the impression I had of age 50 was "the end of your life". I was conscious of Oda Nobunaga's saying that "life has 50 years". But now I understand that "life has 50 years" doesn't mean you can only live for 50 years, it’s about how much can you get done before you're 50. You can't go back to being in your 30s or 40s. I came to feel that what's most important in life is how much you were able to run at full speed up to that point.

Previously I had been wondering internally how much I could get done by age 30, and I thought that it would be downhill from there and end at 50. So honestly what I'm thinking now is "Somehow I'm still alive," and "I've made it this far," that kind of thing.

GACKT had his 50th birthday on July 4th. The release of the long-awaited movie that he is starring in- "Fly Me To The Saitama: From Lake Biwa With Love" has been announced for November 23rd. GACKT had previously kept his age secret from the public, and first announced it in 2009 along with the production of the play Nemuri Kyoshiro Burai Hikae, which he was starring in. We asked his honest thoughts.

The question of whether to announce my age or not wasn’t really on my mind. But at the time, I wondered if it might be time to say it. My fans didn't know either.

The producer I had back then happened to suggest that I tell people my age, so I said "Ok". It wasn't something I particularly wanted to hide. So then I think there were a lot of people who thought "Wait, he's younger than me? He acted like he was older (laughs)."

[Translator’s note: GACKT is talking about how in Japanese culture, younger people usually defer to people older than them, but GACKT was behaving as though he were the one with more seniority]

There was only one reason that I concealed my age. When I was 20 and I moved to Tokyo and started doing music, everyone around me was senior to me. So if I said how old I was I'd immediately be treated as a junior and they'd walk all over me. The roles of senpai (senior) and kouhai (junior) are just decided by age, right? If I said my age, people older than me disrespected me, so I never told anyone my age, outside of my band members at the time. So I made up that I was 448 years old.

If someone was like "You're definitely younger than me. If you're going to have a disrespectful attitude toward me, then I'll crush you," I'd be like "You wanna go then?" Back when I was in a band it was like that all the time.

Most years, GACKT celebrates his birthday with a private party

On July 4th I usually have a concert or a birthday event, and when that's all over and I'm tired out I have a private party. 300 to 400 people attend, so I prepare a large amount of alcohol. In the beginning it was wine, but for the last 12-13 years it's been tequila. Even if each person speaks for one minute, if 400 people are there it takes 400 minutes, 7 hours. It's tough to keep drinking wine for that long, right?

So I thought I'd make it a "tequila survival challenge" party for everyone to participate in. I contact people and tell them that only those who are always in a state of readiness should come. I make them sign a contract at the door too. Saying no matter what happens here it's their own responsibility.

When my birthday party begins, my friends come on stage and immediately drink 10 shots of tequila, so it's tough (laughs). So everyone rapidly fades. At the end only about 30 people remain. At the end everyone staggers home.

I'm all alone when everyone leaves. But I'm totally hyped up and can't sleep, so from morning I start texting everyone. Of course no one replies. When it gets to the afternoon, finally people gradually start to reply "Are you okay?" I reply "I've been texting people all morning. I'm lonely."

At those times I think, "Maybe this is what the battlefield is like." They say people who survived the war and came home, go back to the battlefield. They can't psychologically accept everyday life and feel a sense of emptiness. No one wants to drink any more, and it's not that I want to drink either, but I understand the feeling of wanting to return to an extreme situation. Though people will probably call me strange for thinking things like that (laughs)"

But, when I went on hiatus due to my health issues, I became unable to handle alcohol. I couldn’t drink 5 or 6 bottles of tequila like I used to. On my previous birthday, I only drank about 3.

At the end of last year, in an interview with this magazine, GACKT spoke of writing a will during his one year hiatus. It seems that ahead of turning 50 he had an opportunity to think about his end-of-life plans.

I wrote about 20 wills. Saying things like, "Divide my fortune like this, sell my cars". I wrote about leaving my pet dogs in the care of my sister and my staff, that kind of thing.

I've also told my sister about my burial. I said, "Scatter my ashes in the sea in Okinawa." I don't need a grave. I've never wanted one. I don't want people to visit my grave. It's enough if people will look at the sea and clasp their hands in prayer. I thought about this when buying graves for relatives and things like that. I don't want to be in a grave.

Every year I go back to Okinawa and clean my family's tomb. That's become my role now. I bring at least 20 to 30 staff and clean the graves.

I've been helping clean the graves since my late 20s, but everyone else in my family got old and couldn't do it any more.

Okinawan tombs are big in the first place. Ours is in the mountains, and was rebuilt because it was old, but it's still the size of this studio (where today's photo was taken).

It used to be bigger. I remember when I was 6. We'd go through the sugar cane fields in a car, and then walk the paths between the fields into the mountains, so it was a hard time even getting there. Moss and weeds would grow on the big tomb, and we had to clean off all the dirt too. We tried to go at times when habu (Okinawan pit vipers) wouldn’t come out.

There was an altar as well as the tomb, and the altar and the tomb are in different parts of Okinawa. My ancestors originated in the southern part of Okinawa. So the tomb is in the south, and because my great grandfather founded a town up north, the altar is in the north. So it's not possible to clean the tomb and the altar on a day trip. At the very beginning I went in a group of 6 people, but we couldn't finish and it took two and a half days just to clean the tomb.

I don't want the generation after me to have to do unpleasant things like that. If people have to keep organizing things every year after I die, that will be tough on them, right?

So scatter my ashes. I'll be happy if people come to the sea and I can say "I'm here". And if eventually people stop coming, it won't cause trouble for anyone.

•Miku and Rin go to a shopping mall in Koshigaya, Saitama. While there, a montage begins as “Suki Kirai” starts to play. In the montage, Miku and Rin shop in various stores, try on different cute outfits in a changing room, get their pictures taken in a photo booth, get their nails done at a salon, and run and hide from paparazzi. The girls breathe a sigh of relief and continue with their day when they see that the freelance photographers are gone. Later, Miku and Rin are approached by two hyperexcited cosplayers dressed as them. The Miku cosplayer takes out her phone and asks if she and her friend can take a picture with them. Miku and Rin give the two a nod of approval and take a bunch of pictures with them, ending the montage.

• Len takes Miku to an arcade in Akihabara. The two play various games together like Pac-Man, a shooting game, a racing game, a fighting game, Taiko no Tatsujin, and Dance Dance Revolution (In the DDR game, various Vocaloids are shown as playable characters. Miku and Len play as themselves and the songs they select are Vocaloid songs such as “Soar”, “Yellow”, and “Butterfly on Your Right Shoulder”). Before they leave, Len wins a Miku plushie in a claw machine for Miku.

• Miku and Luka head to a cafe in Shibuya to snack on some sweet treats. They bring Hachune Miku and Tako Luka along with them. At the cafe, Miku and Luka cheerily eat sweets that are themed to look like them, while Hachune and Tako have a fun, over-the-top food fight in the background. Miku and Luka don’t notice the utter chaos that their chibis are causing. After that, the four go to a Mt. Fuji Hot Springs.

• Kaito takes Miku to a Cold Stone Creamery in Shinjuku for ice cream. Because it's her birthday, she receives free ice cream.

• Miku and Meiko go see a movie together in Osaka. They then proceed to a karaoke bar located nearby to sing their hearts out. Everything is going fine as the two take turns singing until Meiko decides to have too much to drink and gets extremely drunk. Miku now has to help the older lady sober up.

• At Miku’s birthday bash concert, Rin, Len, Luka, Kaito, and Meiko all perform the song “Birthday Song for Miku” for Miku. The twintail singer tears up with joy and thanks her friends for such an amazing song and performance! For the rest of the concert, Miku sings some of her favorite songs while wearing her 2020 birthday dress!
