the connection between this book and lewis is what inspired this whole post in the first place. a comeback story even if you have proven all there is to be proven? trying to beat all the odds against you even time? being an all-time champion AND an underdog? there are so many links that can be made between carrie and lewis not just with their careers and relationships but also what adversities they have had to face. idk but is this like manifesting that lewis is going to be "back" for his 8th wdc?

if your favourite driver is George Russell...then i would recommend A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

ah mr wannabe investigator (we all saw him checking out that redbull) but seriously there's something we grussell sprouts must enjoy about someone who seems so straight-laced and uptight be absolutely blatantly unhinged both on and off track. it's just so george to choose literal murder inquiry as a school project, from the ambition bordering on arrogance of believing a high schooler could do what the authorities couldn't to the genuine heartfelt sincerity in wanting the truth and to bring justice for those already deemed outcasts by society. he's OUR good girl that's not-so-secretly "bad".

my faves with my faves. mercedes aren't a national institution/emotion (ferrari), a team (red bull racing), a villains' lair (ashton martin) or a pop band (mclaren) but a family. a dysfunctional, awkward, barely concealed hot mess of a family, but family nonetheless. chasing victory while trying to survive the horrors of life and each other is the merc way and you will see the same in this trilogy. *toto voice* loyalty!

(adult contemporary romance, check tws, book 1 of an ongoing series) "In 'Magnolia Parks' by Jessa Hastings, a tumultuous love story unfolds between the beautiful and self-involved London socialite Magnolia Parks and Britain's notorious bad-boy BJ Ballentine, as they grapple with a dysfunctional relationship marked by heartbreak, secrets, and the enduring pull they feel towards each other."

picked this based on vibes, just pure vibes but immaculate ones. the drama, the glitz, the glam yes but also the family, friendship, and love found within the pages of this series. this is british gossip girl. i am telling you there is a vision here people.

(+ bonus review because this might be the only book on this list that has less (3.84) than 4+ stars on goodreads and i can't do him and y'all dirty like that: i personally didn't love the first book but the series really comes together and you truly get invested in these characters and their happiness, actually pretty excited to read more.

wow like you think he didn't step out of a magical retelling of 1001 nights? mhm but let's leave aside the fact i am still not convinced otherwise. carlos this year has shown his insane mega ultra galaxy brain, so i believe the plot of the wrath & the dawn would be something that would resonate with you. the quick wit and guile of the mc as she tries to carry out a revenge plot while trying to not get executed is only comparable to carlos coming up with his own race strategy mid race and cementing himself as the only non-rbr race winner in 2023. wow.

if your favourite driver is Charles Leclerc...then i would recommend The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

BUT it hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows (helmut marko if i catch you). so i think any emily henry book but especially beach read captures the ups and downs of alex's journey so well compared to just any ole romcom (...but if i had to give one for the alex enjoyers then it would be Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter, coincidentally also george and alex coded lmao).

but was it his remarkable drive back to f1 or the recent holiday beach pics that was the reason behind this rec? i guess we will never know

1. prep first! (moisturizer, sunscreen or primer.)

after prepping, go grab your concealer and cover any blemishes or spots.

3. the fun part, BLUSH! now, I'd personally recommend really, really pastel pink blushes like the one in the pictures above, but if u have diff shades, try experimenting and mix the shades that's what i do lol. I'd also recommend a liquid blush for this. add blush in the apple of your cheeks, under ur eyes, ur lids.

4. mascara!!!!! and a brown eyeliner is a must! add a bit of aegyo sal if u want.

5. lips. lips is pretty simple, just a pink lipstick and u're done!!!

Hi Sal! I've been getting into Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and I LOVE it so far. I've been intrigued by 3 from what little I've seen and I've heard many good things about it so I'm interested in maybe picking it up. On the other hand, I genuinely don't know if I can get through 2 due to all the design stuff just not sitting with me at all (happy for Rex getting his glow up in 3 DLC though). I know 3 has stuff from both 1 and 2 story wise from what I hear, but in your opinion would skipping straight to 3 be manageable if I've only experienced 1 or is it like REQUIRED to go through 2 to even understand what's happening?

While you could play Xenoblade 3 on its own (since it's kindaaa self-contained), I would not recommend skipping on its predecessors, because the DLC for XC3 serves as a bridge between the third game and its predecessors, especially since a lot of questions are unveiled and imperative to the world-building and various character development. You simply would not experience the series properly by skipping the predecessors. While I understand your dislike for the character designs in the second game, the story, music and the characters do more than enough to make up for it.

But yeah, you can play the third game, no problem, but I do not suggest skipping the first and second game.

I was watching RotG and suddenly I could only see the meme with the increasingly large dominos. With the small domino being 'Pia watching RotG' and the big domino being 'Efnisien, Gary, Anton, Temsen, Gwyn and Augus all starring in the same a/b/o fic'. Does RotG hold a special place for you, thinking of all the stories you've written since?

Hmm,

Yes and no? There's an even smaller domino you're not seeing which is that I had written original characters and stories before this, and Augus in particular was based off an original character I'd written before (and not published) so like, Rise of the Guardians didn't *invent* him, I did, years before I ever watched the movie. But there's also dominoes that drove me out of the fandom, and it was my bitterness re: the fandom that prompted the writing of original fic in the first place.

So let me tell you a story, anon. If you don't want to know how toxic the RotG fandom could be, I recommend you just walk away now and know that no, actually, RotG doesn't have a special place in my heart, knowing I wrote original fic to initially escape the way some small pockets of that fandom treated me. Otherwise I would have written RotG fiction for far far longer, because as the old-timers will remember, I actually had a couple of longfic ideas lined up to go immediately after SAL that I abandoned because of well...everything.

I actually spent a while after finishing SAL kind of hating Rise of the Guardians because of some nasty drama and meanness/spite towards me, particularly in the last few chapters, and it took about 2-3 years before I could even consider watching the movie again or write for the fandom again. And then by the time I'd come back, all of my original stuff was established, and I felt a lot more comfortable, and a lot more 'fuck the haters' with some of the stuff I had previously had to deal with.

(Fandom wank beneath the cut, lol)

For example (self-harm and suicide mention) one person would specifically post graphic horrible self-harm photos complete with blood tagged into the RotG and blackice tag/s specifically to coincide with my chapter releases towards the end of SAL - and she was a BNF in the fandom in her own way, so *everyone* kind of knew who she was and what she was doing - and she blamed me and my story for the self-harm, and so I had people coming to me going 'do you realise what this story is doing to this person, don't you even care.' And of course I felt horribly guilty and distressed, but I was also at this point around 7/8 chapters from finishing the story, wanting to give everyone a happy ending, and after posting the last chapter I broke down and cried because I was just so relieved that I didn't have to be tormented by this specific person anymore or see these images as a survivor of suicide attempts and self-harm myself.

But also just crying out of sheer distress because of how horrible those last few weeks were, because like, if it wasn't for the readers I would have walked away due to the pressure and bullying and coercion to get out of the fandom just because I had a story that some folks enjoyed reading. That was a level of targeted hate I'd never encountered before, and have never encountered since.

Around that time a couple of small hate groups started up about me, and I would get messages like 'you realise there are hate groups about you, right?' and I'd be like 'please don't tell me about this, people can hate me, leave them alone.' Then there was the time I just got - over around 10 days - about 100+ messages telling me to kill myself because of SAL and how 'horrible' it was re: it's 'really dark themes' which I find hilarious now, but back then, was actually really stressful when it coincided with someone literally *harming themselves* or posting old self-harm photos on days I posted a chapter, talking about how the reason she was doing it was because she hated that my story was so popular when it didn't deserve to be.

Like, no, I did not have a special relationship with Rise of the Guardians by then, or the fandom. I hated it. It's why I stopped writing for it when previously I literally had so many ideas I wanted to write for Jack/Pitch. For years after that. I would remember the good memories I'd made with SAL, but a lot of readers followed me into original works. And otherwise, all I remembered was being forced to see those photos and this person's tags if I went into the tags to look for fanart to share and promote. I'd made some very good friends (some very best friends, actually), and some of us got the hell out of that fandom as fast as we possibly could to escape these people.

So like, I would love to say that like, I feel nothing but fond memories thinking of the influence Rise of the Guardians has had on me, but no fandom that I've ever been in has ever had this kind of level of underground viciousness that developed as the story gained momentum.

When I wrote The Golden Age that Never Was I was truly detached from the fandom and the movie. I was writing based on my memories and feelings of the characters. I didn't look in the tags like I used to, and instead looked for when I was mentioned directly. I had a spike of anxiety every time I got an anon message while writing it, and I had to like...avoid fics and a bunch of other stuff to get through it.

I have watched Rise of the Guardians since and I do really enjoy it, but...I don't see the dominoes the same way you do anon, probably because of the way it all happened in my head, though I do think putting original writing on AO3 happened partly because I was in a hurry to get out of the RotG fandom. So in a way RotG is connected to that, but like, only because I was fleeing and abandoning all of my Pitch/Jack ideas as I went (to the point where people remembered them and still asked me about them years later and I was like 'haha oh no sorry I'm not writing those oh well maybe one day!')

Chances are high I actually wouldn't have written original fiction if my love for Rise of the Guardians had still stayed strong. I was ready to write two very specific longfics, and had done worldbuilding for both, and was talking openly about them, but towards the end of SAL I bolted from the fandom as fast as I could. The hate I got from specific corners of the RotG fandom is one of the reasons I started writing Game Theory before SAL was even finished - to cope with how I felt about the end of SAL and the hatred I was getting there. When some of those folks said 'omg I'll never read a story about Augus' I was literally like 'oh thank fuck, I'm going to be left alone now.'

Like...I got diagnosed with Fibromyalgia like 6 months after that, I cracked teeth because of how stressed I was, and I still have crowns in my mouth and teeth removed because of that whole period. I was sleeping an average of 3 hours a night.

...I feel a very special fondness for the people who supported me at the time, especially my good friend Silvia, who is still my beta and friend today. She is responsible for far more of the dominoes that have led to this moment than Rise of the Guardians could ever directly be. And I am extraordinarily grateful for the readers who have found my stuff since. Now the majority of readers of my original stuff have never actually seen Rise of the Guardians or read my RotG fics, and like, actually sometimes that's really nice, if a bit weird.

I have never, in my life, encountered a fandom that could get as toxic as pockets of Rise of the Guardians got, and I'm including Dragon Age: Inquisition in that, which had literal blocklists of asexual people, so you know I mean business! But as a final point, I do want to say the majority of people there were amazing, absolutely amazing, this is truly a case of a few bad apples spoiling the whole experience, and I'm still to this day gutted it happened like that, and have zero surprise a lot of people left the fandom all at once, at the same time, because of it.

Welcome! We're so glad you're here! Let's talk about how the Law of Attraction Fest is going to work:

General:

This fest is open to anyone over the age of 18!

This is an anonymous exchange fest, with a hint of a challenge! You'll make a gift for someone based on an assignment, and receive a gift in return.

Because the exchange is open to creators of all kinds (artists, writers, crafters), the gift you receive could be any of these mediums!

This exchange is focused on any Lightning Era queer pairings. By this, we mean characters who were at Hogwarts during the years 1991 to 1997, when Harry studied there. It doesn't mean you can't use other characters in your work, only that the main pairing must have frequented Hogwarts during this time (not necessarily joining the school in 1991, but being there during this 7 year span in whichever school year).

Be mindful of rare pairs and poly ships. Since this is an exchange, we might be unable to match you with the pairing you want. We recommend that if you really like a rare pair, you can let us know in the ‘Anything else?’ section of the sign-up form!

If you wish to take part in this fest, you need to accept and respect the Three Laws of Fandom: SALS, DLDR, and YKINMKATO. We have a zero tolerance policy for unpleasant comments of any kind.

Sign-Ups and Matching:

Sign-ups will open on 28 April 3 pm GMT+1 (convert to your timezone)

Sign-ups will close on 14 May 3 pm GMT +1 (convert to your timezone)

Participants are matched based on their answers (that including likes, squicks/triggers, common pairings etc). 

The exchange will work in pairs, though each participant will remain anonymous to their matching pair until the date of posting. This means you will NOT know who you are creating for until the works are posted!

Because the exchange is open to creators of all kinds (artists, writers, crafters), your gift could be any of these mediums!

Participants will be capped at 30 (meaning there'll be a max of 15 pairs).

Both sections (creating and receiving) of the form are required to be filled in order to sign up.

Once sign-ups time is over and we've matched all the pairings, you'll receive the information about your matching pair and your assigned theme.

Creating:

We'll have several pre-selected "opposite attracts" themes (e.g. "Light and Dark" or "Old and New") which will be randomly assigned to each matched pair using Google Sheets’ "Randomize Range" feature.

Then, each person of the pair will randomly get one half of the "opposites" from the assigned theme. We highly encourage you to deeply explore your assigned theme and think outside the box, bringing out your most interesting ideas!

You can create and interpret the themes however you heart desires ✨

If you're unsure of how to explore these themes, check our FAQ with some examples and brainstorming ideas!

No minimum requirements for anything, including written work. We are not looking for any 100k long fics or the new Mona Lisa (unless you want, of course!), but we expect some effort put into your work of course 😊

We recommend that you have a beta for all written works. If you’d like any help seeking beta/alpha readers, feel free to let the mods know!

All works will be proofread and looked over.

Some of the accepted works: fics, ficlets, drabbles, craft, art works, drawings, photography, paper craft, origami, poetry, embroidery, animation, anything as long as it's made by you! Get in touch with us if you want to create something we haven’t mentioned.

Strictly no AI art or fic allowed.

Gifts are due 31 July 2023. If you think you won't be able to finish in time, not to worry! Just reach out to us asap, so we can figure out an extension or try to find a pinch hitter in time!

Once your work is done, you can go ahead and submit it to LawofAttractionFest AO3 fest collection, and add the fest mod account lawofattraction_mod as a co-creator. If you don't have an AO3 account, reach out to us asap and we'll get you an invitation link.

Remember to tag appropriately and ensure that the HTML coding (the basics for ao3: italics, bolds, centered etc) is working as it should. It's always nice to acknowledge your alphas, betas and creative team, but that's up to you!

3 - What were your top 5 books of the year?

I have to try to not succumb to recency bias on this one but I did read some bangers at the end of the year. Anyway...

Obviously Translation State by Ann Leckie! Even without my all consuming love for the presger treaty extended universe its an excellent book. I've talked/reblogged at length about all the things I love about it - the new characters, the very gender of it all, the various family dynamics, the new bits of worldbuilding, Sphene....

Is it cheating to do a duology? I read The Heretic's Guide to Homecoming by Sienna Tristen this year after meaning to for quite a while and it rewired my brain minorly. It's like an adventure road trip story that's so quiet and thoughtful and nice. There's deep platonic intimacy, there's a thousands-year-old kind of immortal being who keeps changing its name and gender and appearance, there's stories, there's emotions...

A more recent book I finished is Lockjaw by Matteo L Cerilli which actually isn't out til June of 2024 but my friend wrote it so I requested an ARC from netgalley because June is very far away. It's a small town horror YA novel and you can read my relatively spoiler free review on storygraph. Highly recommend preordering.

I read or reread a lot of middle grade this year, and (another duology oops) I really loved Sal and Gabi Break the Universe and Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe by Carlos Hernandez. It was so fun! I've said this a few times thru the year but I'm glad the kids are having adventures! And the adventures in these books are unmatched. There's a lot of parallel universe shenanigans, there are robots, there's random middle school shenanigans, there's a canonically aromantic character... I was very well fed on these books.

Finally coming back to the end of the year, I read The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard which is another relatively lowkey book about people enjoying each others' company but also is somehow about bureaucracy and reforming the government. The main character is the most busy at all times and that really resonated with me when I was also the most busy all the time. It's a very long book but I was engrossed.

I don’t know why but I always get so giddy when I see song lyrics from the songs I recommended being used, I’m so glad you like them as much as I do.

I personally am willing to wait however long you need for one of your works (even if it isn’t in a fandom I’m from) because I know your works are always absolutely amazing and nothing short of a masterpiece. <3

Have you listened to Ariana’s new album and Hozier’s new EP? I loved ‘We can’t be friends’, ‘don’t wanna break up again’, ‘boy is mine’, and ‘I wish I hated you’ from Ari’s album specifically, although every song in that album was so good. ‘Too Sweet’ and ‘Fare Well’ were my favorite from Hozier’s album, the guitar in both is just so good.

My recommendation for this time (if you haven’t heard it already) is Luna Day’s ‘Obsessed’ and ‘Say it Back’. Unrequited love songs will always have a special place in my heart.
