Replying to the Salam Between Genders

al-fuqahāʾ (ie: the jurists) have stated that it is not permissible to speak with a al-shābbah al-ajnabīyyah (ie: young non-maḥram woman) without a need, as it is a cause for fitnah (ie: temptation). ذَهَبَ الْفُقَهَاءُ إِلَى أَنَّهُ لاَ يَجُوزُ التَّكَلُّمُ مَعَ الشَّابَّةِ الأَْجْنَبِيَّةِ بِلاَ حَاجَةٍ لأَِنَّهُ مَظِنَّةُ الْفِتْنَةِ، They said if al-ajnabīyyah greets a man, and if she is an old woman, the man should reply verbally. وَقَالُوا إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ الأَْجْنَبِيَّةَ إِذَا سَلَّمَتْ عَلَى الرَّجُل إِنْ كَانَتْ عَجُوزًا رَدَّ الرَّجُل عَلَيْهَا لَفْظًا But if she is a young woman, and there is fear of fitnah either from her side or the man's side, then giving and responding to the greeting is considered disliked (makruh) according to the Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, and Ḥanbalī schools of thought. أَمَّا إِنْ كَانَتْ شَابَّةً يُخْشَى الاِفْتِتَانُ بِهَا أَوْ يُخْشَى افْتِتَانُهَا هِيَ بِمَنْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْهَا فَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْهَا وَجَوَابُ السَّلاَمِ مِنْهَا حُكْمُهُ الْكَرَاهَةُ عِنْدَ الْمَالِكِيَّةِ وَالشَّافِعِيَّةِ وَالْحَنَابِلَةِ، The Ḥanafī scholars mentioned that the man should reply to the woman's greeting silently if she greets him, and she should do the same if he greets her. وَذَكَرَ الْحَنَفِيَّةُ أَنَّ الرَّجُل يَرُدُّ عَلَى سَلاَمِ الْمَرْأَةِ فِي نَفْسِهِ إِنْ سَلَّمَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَتَرُدُّ هِيَ فِي نَفْسِهَا إِنْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْهَا al-Mawsūʿah al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaytiyyah (2010) 35/122 الموسوعة الفقهية ٣٥/١٢٢ https://shamela.ws/book/11430/22331 Telegram: https://t.me/aljadwal Tumblr: https://al-jadwal.tumblr.com

Tanzania

General Information Tanzania is a country in East Africa. The country was formed in 1964 through the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The region has been involved in international trade for over 2.000 years. During the 19th century, Tanganyika was part of German East Africa while the Sultanate of Zanzibar was the centre for the East African slave trade. In 1890, Zanzibar became a British protectorate.
