On The Ballast Miles by James Waudby

James Waudby has rock credentials. In the 1990s, he was in the band Salado, which toured with Pavement in 1999. He later collaborated with Pavement drummer Steve West. All of this does little to prepare the listener for his first solo album, On the Ballast Miles. Waudby accompanies himself on acoustic guitar, crafting soft, gentle songs. 

Despite this reserved demeanor, all of the music here maintains a sense of momentum. Waubdy’s guitar-playing, in particular, displays an intricacy that belies its dynamic level. Harmonics, pitch bends, dissonant verticals, and drones create an atmosphere that sits astride blues and folk. Basho and Nick Cave are obvious influences, but so is Celtic folk repertoire and the ‘quiet-is-the-new’ loud spate of pop bands from the early aughts. Waudby’s voice is prevailingly lyrical, with a tone that is occasionally rough around the edges. This blends well with his guitar-playing, as evidenced by the album opener “The Land and Sea.”

 “The Last of Your Kind” has the tune wend through multiple registers of the guitar, when Waudby enters singing, it provides a counter-melody to the song’s main tune. The lyrics tend towards the atmospheric, with frequent nature imagery. “Call Back the Morning” intersperses this with an off-kilter chromatic chord progression. Waudby sings in the lowest part of his voice on “I Was Your Line,” bringing a gravelly delivery to a melody that, up a couple tones, would make the song the single from On the Ballast Miles. “Random Reigns” sits more comfortably, with a winsome verse followed by a strong chorus in which the guitar doubles the melody.

The recording also includes two stirring instrumentals: “North Landing” and “Clear Stream Shuffle.” As much as Waudby’s singing is an intrinsic part of On the Ballast Miles, these are welcome interludes. “The Flesh Unmolded Moment” is very nearly an instrumental, frequent guitar breaks surrounding two brief, melodically memorable, sung verses. It is this off-kilter kind of construction that makes many songs by Waudby so distinctive. 

The album closer “Double Dutch” has an undulating groove and a memorable hook. The instrumental break at the end includes tap-ons and fluid scalar passages that traverse the guitar’s range. 

One criticism: the album clocks in at 28 minutes: I wanted a second helping.
