The Fire Salamander #NatureIsTheGreatestShow! 🔥 The fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra), with its black color and yellow spots and stripes, is a striking sight. There are fourteen subspecies, which vary in color and marking, and each individual also has a unique pattern. The colors serve to deter predators. They are also quite poisonous.
The fire salamander likes to hide in and around (dead) wood. When people used to go gather wood to make a fire, they would sometimes see a fire salamander fleeing from the heat. It seemed as if these salamanders were born from fire! The black and yellow pattern of its skin will certainly have contributed to this legend as well.
The fire salamander can be found in large parts of Europe. Also in Belgium! However, they are rare and only live where old oak and beech forests still exist, such as the Ardennes, the Sonian Forest, the Haller Forest and the Flemish Ardennes. The fire salamander is currently seriously threatened by a salamander-eating fungus, originating from Asia.

The forest is just breathtaking. I've spotted six salamanders today as they were resting and sunbathing. Holy shit! So get this... This is the #MagicFountain I have posted about before. This water has been used for generations to heal skin conditions. When I first heard about it I assume it was the mineral content, like some springs that have high concentration of selenium, I now have a new theory! That Salamander pictured there is the "Fire Salamander" prevalent throughout Europe. The Fire Salamander, or #SalamandraSalamandra has yellow spots on it's skin, these spots are glands for the #highlytoxic alkaloid steroidal #Salamandrin! This toxin has an LD50 of 70 µg/kg in mice and 700µg/kg in dogs , and causes convulsions, hypertension, hyperventilation and eventually death by respiratory paralysis ... But it is also #antibacterial and #antifungal and can be absorb #transdermal! If you look in the fountain you will see a juvenile #FireSalamander (there were several). This magic fountain is their #vernalpool! These #dermatological benefits, I hypothesize, are a consequence/benefit of this #steroidal #toxin! I'll never know if this is true or not, so I will file it in my mind as "As true as anything else I can't prove"...or absolutely true 😂👍 I dunked my hat in the pool prior to continuing my run, I probably wouldn't have done that had I known. 🦎 Is it tough to breath in here!? Let the #hypochondria commence! 👨🏼‍🔬🔥🦎☠️ #SheTurnedMeIntoANewt .... #IGotBetter! (at Lusiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoJ8g8llyW9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19mnsdjrqpg2j
