Pokemon Card of the Day #2538: Alolan Muk-GX (Burning Shadows)

Alolan Muk-GX was one of those Pokemon that had interesting ideas, with each idea having something to overcome. It could hit pretty hard if you could stack Special Conditions on the opponent’s Pokemon. It could also deal solid damage while discarding the opponent’s Energy if you could get a bunch of Energy on Alolan Muk-GX first. Those were things that had to be overcome, and that wasn’t always easy in a game with so many good options already.

220 HP was quite a bit. Being a Stage 1 Pokemon-GX did mean good HP, and Alolan Muk-GX did not disappoint. The Fighting Weakness could cause problems, especially in the BKT-On format where you’d see the likes of Lycanroc-GX and Zygarde-GX quite often. The Psychic Resistance, on the other hand, could be nice in a few spots, depending on the exact damage something like Garbodor might be dishing out. The Retreat Cost, at 4, was absurdly high. Some sort of switching card was absolutely required here.

Chemical Breath, with no set-up, was very weak. 10 damage for a Darkness and 2 Colorless Energy was not going to impress anyone. The deal here was that 70 damage was added for each Special Condition on the opponent’s Active Pokemon. 2 Special Conditions made this an impressive 150. You’d want to set those Special Conditions using an Ability, as doing so with an attack was rather slow. The best partner was probably Salazzle from Guardians Rising, which set Burn and Poison when it evolved from Salandit. A set of that with some Devolution Spray could result in repeated Chemical Breath attacks, though getting all the pieces in place consistently could be an issue. a Choice Band-boosted it like that could reach 180 before Poison, though, which was quite devastating.

Crunch didn’t need the extra set-up, requiring 4 Energy instead. This was a pretty steep price for 120 damage, which was a good amount to be sure but not rare at all. Discarding an Energy attached to the opponent’s Active Pokemon was certainly a nice bonus. This could typically take out a Pokemon in 2 hits and might disrupt said Pokemon by getting rid of an important Energy, making the attack solid despite how much Energy was needed.

Tri Hazard GX didn’t need any Energy at all, but required using the GX attack for the game so you got 1 shot at it. It had you switch 1 of the opponent’s Benched Pokemon with their Active Pokemon, and the new Pokemon was Burned, Paralyzed, and Poisoned. This could set up for a huge turn with Chemical Breath unless the opponent played Switch, Escape Rope, or Guzma, which gave opponents ways out in many cases and made it a lot less useful than you’d think.

Alolan Muk-GX was interesting, and could be decent when the set-up worked. It was less efficient than many more popular attackers, with Drampa-GX being notable as a Basic Pokemon that could also reach 150 with a single damage counter placement. If you liked to play with some more interesting set-ups, even if it wasn’t as good, Alolan Muk-GX might be worth playing around with, though only as a casual option due to just how much better other things were.

Pokemon Card of the Day #2541: Darkrai-GX (Burning Shadows)

One card in Burning Shadows was not enough for Darkrai. The second was a Pokemon-GX, which gave up the extra Prize but was also much more consistent. This time, the damage was much more reliable, and a card that could hit the Bench from the discard pile and accelerate a little Energy to itself in the process was very interesting indeed. Darkness had fallen from its previous peak by the time Darkrai-GX showed up, and maybe this could help bring it back.

180 HP was on the lower end for Pokemon-GX, and that could leave it vulnerable to the stronger attacks out there. A Choice Band-boosted hit from Drampa-GX, for example, could give up 2 Prizes immediately, and the same went for the later Pikachu & Zekrom-GX. Most of the time, however, it would be enough to take one hit. The Fighting Weakness was a big problem if trying to use this in 2018′s BKT-On format, with Lycanroc-GX, Buzzwole and its GX, and Zygarde-GX being very popular. A Psychic Resistance wasn’t a big drop in damage but could prevent a KO from something like Garbodor in certain moments. Darkrai-GX also needed 2 Energy to retreat, and Float Stone (or Escape Board) could be nice to help with that as Choice Band often fell just short of what it needed to do to get big KO’s.

Restoration was a nice Ability that could help Darkrai-GX get going. If this Pokemon was in your discard pile, you could put it onto your Bench and then put a Darkness Energy card from the discard pile onto it. This just got a little boost to power up attacks, with the possibility of hitting for 130 damage by turn 2. Any speed boost was always nice to see.

Dark Cleave was a very solid attack. 130 damage was good for 2 Darkness and a Colorless Energy. This would take out most Pokemon in 2 hits, making this a good way to deal damage to all the Pokemon-GX out there.

Dead End GX could get a KO out of nowhere, also for 2 Darkness and a Colorless. If the opponent’s Active Pokemon was affected by a Special Condition, it was simply Knocked Out. You could try pairing this with something like Salazzle for the one-time KO on an important Pokemon. It was not the focus of the deck, and if another Pokemon had a useful GX attack you didn’t need to necessarily build around it. It was, of course, very good if you were able to fit a somewhat awkward Stage 1 line in with your Darkness-types, and was far better in Expanded where you could just use Hypnotoxic Laser.

Darkrai-GX was a solid, but by no means spectacular, attacker. It didn’t do much in any Standard format, as cards had to be pretty spectacular to stand out without a ton of support. Darkrai-GX’s problem was that the best Darkness support had already rotated out. Darkrai-GX was quite good for a while in Expanded, pairing with Hypnotoxic Laser, Darkrai-EX, Dark Patch, and even later Pokemon like Weavile-GX and Greninja & Zoroark-GX which all wanted the older support to reach their peak. That gave a look at how good Darkrai-GX might have been if it had been active with some really good support.

Forgot to post about it but I opened a few Pokemon packs and one MM2017 pack today. I pulled a Salazzle GX again and a Marsh Flats. So good pulls I think.

Height: I think I’m around 5′4 or 5′5. It’s been quite some time since I measured my height.

Time right now: It’s 3:29PM.

Last thing I googled: Yuri on Ice. I finally jumped on that bandwagon. Plus, I wanted to double check a couple of the voice actors since I instantly recognized both Yuya and Reiji’s voices in a couple of the supporting characters.

Fave music artist: I don’t think that I really have a favorite artist. I tend to focus on whatever song appeals to me more so than a specific artist or group. I particularly like light/soft rock and pop songs the most though.

Song stuck in my head: I think the last song that was stuck in my head was Don’t Go Away by Oasis.

Last movie I watched: A Muppet Christmas Carol. It’s one of my favorite Christmas movies and I’m glad that I didn’t miss watching it like I did in another Christmas season. I should try to watch more movies more often though.

Last TV show I watched: Yuri on Ice. I just finished the series this morning. It was good cute romantic fluff and I’m always up for that. Even though I basically saw most of the series through others people’s posts, it was still good and enjoyable.

What are you wearing right now: A blue coat over a blue shirt with blue jeans.

When did you create your blog: I believe it was around 2013.

What kind of stuff do you post: I mainly use this blog for Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! stuff. I do reblog stuff for other shows I like, as well as social justice/political posts, but I focus on Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! content the most.

Do I have any other blogs: Nope.

Do I get asks regularly: I usually get one or two when I reblog a set of questions or when friends want to talk to me.

Why did I choose my url: I wanted to go for a Yu-Gi-Oh! inspired username since almost all of the other ones I’ve used are Pokemon related. Blue Eyes White Dragon is my favorite dragon in the game and the image of a dragon being in a garden sounded powerful yet soothing to me at the same time. It was something strong being in a gentle environment like a garden, so I went with that.

Gender: Female.

Hogwarts House: I don’t really know since I’ve never tried to figure out which house I’d be shorted into before.

Pokemon Team: Well one of my current teams is Primarina, Lycanroc, Salazzle, Tsareena, Alolan Ninetales and Kommo-O. If this is referring to what team I’m on for Pokemon Go, then I’m on Team Mystic.

Favorite color: It would definitely be blue. I also really like purple, green, red and orange to make up my top five favorite colors.

Average hours of sleep: It would probably be around six, depending on when I fall asleep and if my puppy dog Clancy wakes me up early. He’s been waking me up as early as 4:30AM lately because he thinks it’s time to get ready to take him for a walk. I wouldn’t mind the early wake ups so much if I could easily go back to sleep, but I’m usually too awake to do that right after he wakes me up.

Favorite character(s): I can list off a few of them here. Yuya from Arc-V, Sho from GX, Pearl from Steven Universe, Zuko from Avatar and Himeno from Pretear.

How many blankets do I sleep with: Three, but I may need to get a fourth one. It’s been pretty cold lately even with three blankets and my hands and feet freeze up pretty easily.

Dream job: I’m not sure. I guess doing something with writing would be nice. Maybe like a book reviewer or something.
