Rubus spectabilis (salmonberry)
The salmonberry in our back garden catches the early sun on a beautiful spring morning. Does it get any better than this?

I was wondering... If stardew Dream was an actual npc... what would his fav gifts be? would he have any random "exception" for loved gifts (like penny hating rabbit's foot and Haley hating the prismatic shard)
another long post time!!
Dream: loves: summer shell, honey, diamond (for the dnf chain), poppy, + clay likes: [any flower], survival burger, + farmer's lunch, pumpkin pie, dish o the sea neutrals: wool, fruit salad, roasted hazelnuts, + [any mayonnaise], strange bun dislikes: miners treat, [any cake], + field snack hates: coffee, joja cola, artichoke dip, hot pepper, duck feather
George: loves: piña colada, sashimi, maki roll, mango, + pearl, emerald, dandelion likes: wine, salmon dinner, fruit salad, + [any sushi], ice cream neutrals: blue jazz, banana, + algae soup dislikes: tomatoes, goat cheese, + cave carrot, salmonberry, pasnip hates: coffee, green tea, wild horseradish, + [any fish], [any mayonnaise]
mostly we chose out of like just vibes what we think they'd like or dislike but some are dnf references lets see if you can get them wink wink
extra lore bit cause its funny, during the first year Luau (like a big event where the townsfolk bring like their crop to make this huge soup to impress the mayor(?)) George fucks it up by adding a salmonberry into it and so ever since then he dislikes salmonberries casue it reminds him of it LMAO and its his least favorite festival as well Dream covered it up for him but finds it funny and mentions it time to time!

Tech's Helmet: Im finyish go fo Belta
So, a major plot point in Far Past the Ring is the simple fact that the layout and design of Tech's unique trooper helmet was copied, and taken back to the Ring Gate, where Belters have gone absolutely bananas over this fancy and ingenious design.
Belters live their lives in space completely, and having a helmet that is safe, comfortable, and practical, is crucial as life itself. In The Expanse, Belters often slap stickers or write their names on their helmets. I imagine, with more time and wealth, more decorations can take part, and it's a big plot point in the longfic, especially for Tro, pictured below in the bottom right.
Here's the OCs who have taken Tech's helmet design (which is called the 'Tekimang' style.
FYI: Tekimang is the Lang Belta word for an engineer, it literally translates to 'tech-man'! It becomes an ongoing joke that it's Tech's full name, lol.
Tumblr media
Front view of the helmets.
Sjael Drummer: A chemical engineer who focuses on creating synthetic and organic sweeteners for human consumption, Sjael’s helmet is covered in elaborate flowers and fruits that she works closely with. You will see strawberries, blueberries, vanilla, and blossoms from potato and carrot plants. They are done in mixed Ojibwe/Rosemaling style, to signify her mixed First Nations and Scandinavian Earther heritage. I also designed it to also signify her archetype as Persephone and Idunn (coincidentally, the name of her Mulan-class gunship), bringers and guardians of life and all things green and growing.
Timon Chapelle: Timon is a firefighter, through and through. His helmet is covered in almost brutalist paintings of flames and ropes, all in reds, oranges, and yellows. The ‘ropes’ on his cheeks are almost Celtic in design, as in some ways, he is a keeper of multiple facets of knowledge as a Belter elder.
Hobbs Chapelle: “If an elementary school kid designed a helmet”. Hobbs is obsessed with animals, especially his two pet cats, and becomes enamored with the idea of Wookiees and other sentient species after meeting clone troopers from the 41st. He not only has his cats' paws on his helmet's front, but a stylist design of Wookiee handprints and claw marks on the ears and visor, made to look like they were painted with mud. The circles on top of the helmet signify his homes of Ganymede, Ceres, and now Medina Station.
Tro Chapelle: A budding artist and high school freshman, Tro’s helmet designs is all over the place, as are her interests. Very much a teen's notebook style, a girl still figuring out her place in the universe. Her helmet's ears have the design of her great-grandmother’s ‘freedom quilt’ from Earth that was destroyed in the Ganymede attack. Her visor has her name in Ojibwe from the Drummer side. The rest of her helmet is covered in various paint jobs to symbolize elements of fire, air, water, and earth–things that she is thrilled to see now that she is on the station.

I finally get to use this banner!!
Gn!Reader
The doorbell chimed with the arrival of a new customer, diverting your attention away from the fingerprints staining the glass case of pastries. “Good afternoon!’ you greeted the woman, tucking the rag you were using into the strings of your apron as you rounded the counter. ‘Good morning, or no. It’s afternoon now isn’t it? How are you?” The woman greeted you with a bright smile, almost as bright as her hair. It was a beautiful shade of baby pink, and the tips looked like they were dipped in limes. It was a striking difference but it worked so well for her. Like a cool summer day, when the sun was out and beating, but the wind was at the perfect speed. Perfect is how you felt describing her. “I am very good today, How are you?” She smiled, her eyes disappearing behind her joy at your reply. ‘I’m wonderful. It’s such a beautiful day out and I am off of work today so I can go out and enjoy it, I’m very happy.” She trailed off, eyeing the display of confectionaries and sweets you had lined up and plated to look most appetizing. “Have you been here before? We have samples up top in these little cases” You pointed out the round cases with lids facing the outside. “I haven’t. Do you recommend anything?” She looked up at you through the cases, shocking green eyes staring right at you with the brightest smile. You were convinced she was the physical embodiment of a sunny summer day in a flower field. “Well on a day like today when the sun is shining and I'm assuming you are spending it outside I would recommend something light, refreshing. We have our personal fruit tarts which are accompanied with an apricot glaze, which really makes the flavors stand out. We have a few different mousses, this month we are showcasing our strawberry mousse, which has White chocolate pearls inside of it and sits atop a vanilla shortbread cookie. However, if your going out and don’t plan on snacking immediately I wouldn’t do that. Mousses don’t hold in hot weather.” You had to stop and breathe watching as she looked at the display you were just pointing at, the small round personal tarts topped with fruits and glazed to hell and back. the copious amount of mousses and other sweets was a bit overwhelming, especially on a first visit. “I think I’ll do a fruit tart, a strawberry mousse, and the orange melon mouse.” She smiled walking further down the display towards the cakes and loaves of bread. “Do you make all of this?” She questioned, glancing back at where you were boxing up the treats, careful not to ruin the glacage on the mousses. “My team and I do it. Some recipes are mine so I try to do those but it's overall a team effort.” She nodded, walking over to where you were placing the box down at the register. “Are you the owner?” you chuckled. “That would be nice, but no. I’m just the head of most products. Like the head chef of a restaurant.” She nodded along with what you were saying. “Are you allergic to anything?” She shook her head. “Perfect stay here real quick” You ran into the back going to the small tray of prototypes you had made earlier that morning. Taking a couple with you back to the front you presented them. “I’m working on flavor profiles for next month. These are summer berry macarons. This is the blueberry with a blueberry actually in the middle, raspberry, blackberry, and salmonberry. I’m gonna let you take these home with you. I made them this morning but there are too many and you seem fond of sweets. Plus, you keep letting me ramble about them.” You smiled, feeling the anxiety settle in your palms as you fumbled to close the box properly after adding the macarons to it. She was still smiling as you looked back up, eyes watching carefully as you finished struggling with the box and turned to the register. “You're as sweet as the pastries are. Thank you!! I can’t wait to try them I will definitely be back to let you know what I think.” You tried to breathe through the brush you could feel creeping up at the compliment. Numbly going through the motions of checking her out and handing her the receipt. “I look forward to hearing your reviews. Hopefully, it's 5 stars across the board.” She smiled. “I’m more than sure that it will be. With all the care you seem to put into it I'm sure they are wonderful. What’s your name so I can make sure to ask for you in case you aren’t here again.” “Y/N” “Well Y/N” she picked up the box. “I’m Mitsuri. I look forward to seeing you again. Thank you again for all of your help. You’re a doll!” She cheered, giving a final wave before disappearing out the doors in a flurry of pink and green.

[Love for berries.]
"Having lived in the forest for a good majority of her life has taught her to forage for the best quality edibles, this ranged from the most scented flowers to the freshest fruit and herbs, most notably... berries.
Grapes, blackberries, you name it. The mild sweetness has kept her allured for the longest time, and it seems it will remain unwavering for a long, long while."
—————
"During the flower festival, the sight of 'strawberry seeds' from Pierre's stand had piqued her interest. She had never heard of a 'strawberry' from her time isolated in the forest, so the mere mention of a 'berry' was enough to convince her to buy a few.
It took a few weeks of cultivating, even dealing with those damn crows once in a while, but she persisted, all to fill in her curiosity for this 'strawberry' she desires for, even if she wasn't very fond of farming.
The day of the harvest came. She was surprised to see the fruit in a bright red color, it's even brighter than salmonberry! After collecting a few of her long-awaited fruit, she took a deep breath... and dug in.
. . .
The taste... it was phenomenal! The luscious fruit has definitely piqued her interest now!"
—————
"Although she wasn't able to make much buck out of her harvest (since she ate half of it), she didn't care! She has her now favorite fruit right in her possession, it's a better deal than the money she was making!
Now, every flower festival, she goes out of her way to buy a considerable amount of strawberry seeds from Pierre. If she isn't eating them directly, then she is definitely using them as an ingredient for desserts.
Pierre even jokes about how she got her pink-ish skin from the amount of strawberries she eats, haha!"

Wiid
Robert Davidson
from the website: The Wiid is a bird that only appears when the salmonberries are ripening on Haida Gwaii. The bird is here reduced to the small head at the upper portion of the composition. The flower of the salmonberry might be alluded to in the white cross-shape against the blue. Formally, the work is a precise balance of a series of tensions and releases. The pressure seen in the compressed white tri-neg defined by the conjunction of the black, blue and red forms is relieved by the upward sweep of the line between the black and red shapes. The bird head is a point of detail within the larger, sweeping shapes of the work. - Pg. 22 Robert Davidson "Progression of Form"
From Robert’s talk on this piece, we know that the circular shape represents a salmonberry.

A friend came to visit for a couple of days, so we did a big hike all over the South Bay (Tarlatt/Riekkola) Unit of Willapa NWR. I didn't get a ton of pictures, but I did snap this one of licorice ferns (Polypodium glycyrrhiza) on a mossy nurse log. It's named for the sweet, licorice-like flavor of the edible rhizome.
It's not something I've personally tried. I'm not a fan of the licorice flavor to begin with, but more importantly as a forager I tend to avoid harvesting anything that would require me to kill the entire plant. Leaves, flowers, berries, sure--I'm okay with that. And no, pulling up a mushroom will not kill the entire fungus.
I think it's important to be able to recognize edible plants and fungi and know how to prepare them, both for curiosity's sake and also because there's always that chance of getting lost in the woods while hiking and needing to find emergency food. But I am not one of these super hardcore western foragers where 95% of what they eat normally is foraged, fished, or hunted. I don't have the time, quite honestly, and there are ways to eat relatively sustainably that can include more conventional foods.
Moreover, a lot of the things we like to forage are food for wildlife (who can't just go to a grocery store), or carry seeds or spores that are needed to replenish the local population of a given species. I don't think foragers talk nearly enough about the impact we can have on ecosystems when we over-harvest, especially as foraging becomes more popular. I already teach my foraging students to not take more than 25% of something from a given area, which is a lot stricter than many other foragers' guidelines. For myself, I'll sometimes incorporate something I've brought home like mushrooms or berries into my cooking, especially if it's something new to me that I want to get a better sense of. But it's more as seasonal treats that I look forward to throughout the year, not as the core of my food security.
And for something like licorice fern, my personal view is "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should." It's not an endangered species, but it's not necessary for me to collect something that will cause me to rip up an entire plant while also disturbing well-developed moss forests to get at the rhizome. So I'll let the ferns keep on living, and go harvest some literal low-hanging fruit once the salmonberries get their last bit of ripening in.

2024's Top Backyard Landscaping Design Trends
Tumblr media
Hello, fellow green thumbs! As we gear up for 2024, we at Earth’s Element are buzzing with excitement about the future of landscape design. The Pacific Northwest is a playground for us, with its unique climate and diverse ecosystems. So, let’s dive into some of the top trends that are set to shape our backyard landscaping and hardscape in the coming year.
First up, we’ve got Hortifuturism. Think bold, bright colors and elements that seem straight out of a sci-fi movie. It’s all about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a garden, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and forward-thinking.
Next, we’re seeing a rise in Low Carbon Landscaping. This trend is all about using local plant varieties and investing time and effort into growing herbs, veggies, and fruit in your own garden to reduce carbon footprint. It’s all about creating landscapes that are not only beautiful but also kind to our planet.
One of our favorites is the concept of Backyard Retreats. This trend involves transforming your backyard into a luxurious oasis, complete with comfortable seating areas, outdoor kitchens, and even water features. It’s about creating a space where you can relax, entertain, and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.
We’re also loving the trend of Incorporating Metals into landscape design. Whether it’s in shade structures, artistic panels, water features, or planter boxes, metal elements add a modern touch to any landscape.
A trend that’s particularly relevant to the Pacific Northwest is the use of Native Plants. Native plants not only add natural diversity to your garden but are also beneficial for local wildlife. Some great options for the Pacific Northwest include Douglas fir, sword fern, salmonberry, Oregon grape, and red flowering currant.
Hanging Gardens are growing in popularity. They maximize vertical space, add beauty, grow food and create privacy. Plants with draping forms often require less maintenance due to increased airflow, preventing rotting. It also allows plants to naturally spill and trail as their vines grow.
Last but not least, Edible Gardens are becoming increasingly popular as people seek to combine functionality with aesthetics. Mixing edible plants with the rest of your landscape rather than containing them in raised beds adds an element of surprise and practicality to your garden.
As we move into 2024, these trends offer exciting opportunities to transform our landscapes into spaces that are not only visually stunning but also sustainable and in harmony with our local environment. Whether you’re planning a complete landscape overhaul or just looking to make a few updates, these trends provide plenty of inspiration.

@gachanora
Fay loves a good cheese omelette or spaghetti. Though her favorite food item to gift would be salmonberry jam. She has a lot of it.. and almost everyone (except for you, sebastian) likes it.
Wisk’s is peirogis.
Meebs misses fast food since being on the Far Far Range. Loves Ogden’s cooking though
Mint enjoy’s Louie’s bulborb dishes. Also spicy foods 🌶
Tumblr media
She’s not… bad, but not really good either. Can really only do simple things
She’s since been banned from being within 5ft of Warly’s crockpot and should be supervised while using any other crockpot after the ‘soup incident’ though..
Tumblr media
Cute and silly cat videos, bad jokes from Spinner, and Raven’s smile
Tumblr media
28. How do they break bad news to someone?
When they were first learning, not very well, since they didn’t know what qualified as ‘bad news’
Now, it’s still very awkward, but less blunt
Tumblr media
1. How good is their sight?
Considering she wears glasses, not great?
Rose is nearsighted. So with their glasses off, far away things are extremely blurry. Idk 🤷
29. Do they have a collection of anything?
Yes. At least of few of each gem they find and shades of many flowers kept in chests. Pretty objects and gifts in a chest next to their bed including a rainbow shell from Jas and a pearl from the night market.. And bombs sent from Kent or extras from her skull cavern runs stay in her mushroom cave. Just a lot of things, yknow.
They also carry at least 20 or so salmonberry jams with them at all times to give to people. It’s sweet and weird
35. Would they take the chance to be immortal?
Who says they already aren’t..?
