ghoul au ——

Instead of being chosen for vault entry, Mal was one of many who found himself with nowhere to go the day the bombs fell. Although he and his cat managed to survive the initial blast, they weren't shielded from the massive amounts of radioactive fallout that followed.

Through a twist of fate, both succumbed to ghoulification, and spent the next 200 odd years building a life for themselves among the ruins of Boston and the surrounding countryside.

Due to the discrimination that comes from being a ghoul, and his own naturally reclusive nature, Mal mostly kept a low profile until recent years, when fate has him crossing paths with another pre-war veteran — the sole survivor of Vault 111.

Malcolm Price  — Synth copy of a pre-war veteran and Vault 111 survivor (no not that Survivor), and maybe a couple people’s favorite gremlin.

Age: 34 (July 3rd—Cancer) Special: [S] 4 [P] 11 [E] 5 [C] 2 [I] 6 [A] 10 [L] 1 Weight: 135 lbs Height: 5’ 9’’ Build: Lithe, slim, but athletic. Long legs. Ethnicity: Ambiguously Caucasian (synth) — pale skin, freckles Hair: Auburn Eyes: Green-hazel Gender: Cis male Orientation: Bisexual

Faction alignment: N/A — friendly or neutral to most non-hostile factions. Is dating/married to Nate Ronan, General of the Minutemen, but is not officially a ranking member. (of note: he’s loyal to Nate and his ‘family’, not the faction itself. If Nate’s allegiance were to change, so would Mal’s.)

Enemy Factions: The Institute tops the list. For everyone else, it comes down to whoever is shooting at him/people he cares about. He’s very live and let live, but if you come after his family there will be a problem.

Home location: (formerly downtown Boston, pre-war. Was homeless post-war up until meeting Nate) Currently: The Castle, Boston

—> Backstory:

The original Mal was also a solider pre-war. Was badly injured during his service (nearly died, ended up an amputee—left leg, has a prosthetic replacement), sent home, did end up as part of the Vault 111 group. He was never married, had no kids, lived in downtown Boston rather than Sanctuary Hills, didn’t have any living family or relatives/connections pre-war.

Post-war after waking up in the Vault, ended up as a wandering vagabond/scavver/merc, kept to himself mostly. Spends a fair amount of time in Goodneighbor, but doesn’t live there.

As a synth, he has all those memories of the real Mal’s life, and appears to have replaced him about a year out of the Vault. (so he has all the memories pre-war, and about a year’s worth of memories living post-war). Physically, and mentally/memory wise, they are identical. The ‘real’ Mal is presumed dead at this point, but whether or not that’s true is unknown.

—> Personality:

Extremely introverted, wary and distrustful, and lacking people skills. He’s a bit emotionally volatile, bristly, has anger issues, but doesn’t sustain those intense emotions very long. Prefers to remove himself from situations where he knows he’s getting upset, but if he’s pushed or cornered he’ll fight back, often viscously and reactively.

Morally, he’s live and let live. He’ll respect your freedoms and quirks so long as you respect his, and he’s not out to tell anyone how to live their lives.

It’s very difficult to win his trust or affection but once you do he’s absolutely loyal and will follow you to hell and back.

He starts his story as significantly more self-interested and morally dubious, but eventually Character Development kicks in and he starts actively working to be a better person.

I think he’s best been summed up as “feral” and “a gremlin”.

moderate level weapon repair/modding (pipe weapons and non-energy weapons, melee)

Parkour

Lockpicking and stealth are really where he shines most. If he can slip past enemies altogether and avoid a fight, he’d much rather do that.

In general he’s really something of an improviser, good at MacGuyvering things, setting traps, and making stuff work with what he has on hand. Adaptability and quick thinking is probably his biggest asset in any situation, tbh.

But he trusted Nate, and he trusted Nate's judgement, and for whatever reason Nate had looked in at the worst of Mal, all of it, and saw something worth saving. No, not saving: something worth loving. A fractured laugh caught in Mal’s throat. "I love you," He said, clearer. Thick and choked, but relieved. "And I'm—I'm gonna try to live up to—to all of that, okay? Be better. Everyday." A short pause. "We can do this. Together. Take things one step at a time."

wip wednesday

From a backstory wip set in Mal’s superhero au. He’s around 14 here.

Mal turned his attention back to the flock of pigeons congregated around him, their cooing and flitting and swarming somehow managing to be only mildly irritating instead of creepy.

Lucky for them.

With a scowl, Mal lifted his foot, trying to shoo them away from the bench he’d dropped down onto. A couple took wing, only to plop right down again the second his shoe touched the ground. Scores of beady eyes fixed on him.

No. Not on him. On his goddamned sandwich.

“Shoo.”

Mal scowled harder. Took a hasty bite of his food and tried to ignore the pitiful looks aimed pointedly his direction.

“I’m not sharing,” he muttered. They seemed to be calling his bluff. Mal sighed again. A fresh chorus of pitiful coos answered back. “Stop it.”
