#naclyoho day 4
- tidied away clean towels, put used towel in wash
- emptied litter locker, scooped litter trays
- put in a hair mask
One voice in my head looks at that list and says I should be doing more, another asks when have I ever consistently done *something* to tidy my house 4 days in a row instead of one big day of panic cleaning followed by three weeks of feeling guilty for stopping.
I have a list of things I want to accomplish this month, some ongoing maintenance I should probably do more often, others once off tasks I’ve been procrastinating (I bought a heap of posters/prints to brighten up my walls in March 2020, they’re sitting in a tub with the frames waiting to go up… I’d love to get them hung before we hit 4 years)

NaClYoHo Day 16!
remembered to call the doctor and did that
emailed my other doctor
unloaded and reloaded dishwasher
cleaned the other side of the shower (yay!)
decluttered the kitchen crazy cupboard (where random large items go and where I store my clean and empty plastic containers for reuse)
took donations from the drawer and the crazy cupboard to the thrift store
while at the thrift store, found a real actual shower stool that was $6 and still in the box it came in - I've been using a plastic footstool so I ABSOLUTELY took the new stool home
assembled the new stool
did 1 round seasoning the new pan (combined effort with husbff)
did some dusting while on the phone with my dad

NaClYoHo 2022, Day One
Today I improved:
* my desk at work by shredding documents, processing payments from the last concert, and putting office supplies where they belong
* the bathroom by putting unused supplies in storage, consolidating shampoo and conditioner bottles, refilling the hand soap container, replenishing the TP and booty wipes, and putting the hair dryer away
* my bedroom by emptying my bedroom trash and recycling bins into the kitchen bins, putting away a pile of clean laundry I’d dumped on top of the dresser, and moving dirty clothes from the floor into their hampers
* the kitchen by putting the clean dishes away and scooping the cat boxes
Mom got out of the hospital yesterday and asked the missionaries to come over and give her a blessing. (It’s a Mormon thing.) After the blessing, the missionaries took out the trash and recycling. I had Dad give them a bunch of Lindor truffles as thanks. The missionaries are in their teens and/or early twenties, and they ride bikes everywhere they go, so those truffles will get burned off instead of padding my ass. Win-win.

Today was sunny, so I pruned the roses. Two of them caught bad cases of black spot year before last, so I was pruning off any damaged branches and all foliage to give them a fresh start in the spring. I also policed the yard for invading blackberries, removing them with extreme prejudice (and a shovel).
Finally I pruned the neighbor's tree, a poor creature I've been doing rescue pruning on for the last...three years? Dear Ceres... It got badly butchered by someone who thought you could make a tree smaller by cutting it shorter--spoiler: you can't!--so I've been managing the resulting water sprouts, thinning first to the strongest thirteen (it was a big tree!) and then further pruning to eight new trunks-to-be. Today I removed this year's new water sprouts, limbed up the new trunks, and pruned off the bits headed towards the neighbor's house. It'll never have the grace of the original, but it's looking decent.
If you own your own house, remember that your friend or relative with a chainsaw doesn't necessarily know what the fuck they're doing! There's a certain type, usually male, who just really, really wants to chop something down with that thing!

Today in the penultimate Salty Pirate Adventure of the year, I went four rounds against the oven.
I think it's a tie.
UFyH style, let's do Before and After photos!
Before:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This oven is less than a year old. Its interior ought to be blue. Also, whichever among us three sometimes cooks directly on the grate, we all need to stop that.
(This is going to make my occasional Eggo Lunch more tedious. Worth it to have no more battles like today.)
I followed the directions to do a Steam Clean cycle. It loosened up some of the crud, but nowhere near enough. And I was doing myself an injury as I attempted to use a wet washcloth to wipe away the grease. No matter what I did, some grease continue to be on the wall and the cloth that I was using showed signs of needing to be cleaned.
I therefore made baking soda paste with which I coated all areas that were not heating elements. I left that to think about what it was doing for a quarter of an hour or more while I cleaned one of the oven grates.
I spent an hour and a half trying to wipe away all of the residue. Mostly the baking soda succeeded in breaking up the grease and pulling it away from the oven walls. But now I had a problem of a white film on everything it took repeated runs of completely cleaning out my washcloth and then wiping the entire up and down -- starting at the top rear.
This hurts like the dickens. I don't really bend the ways that I need to bend in order to do this job.
I now understand why it would have occurred to people long ago that an older woman living alone might decide to take a small child and put them inside of the oven. However it would have been a cold oven with cleaning supplies; and the child would have been instructed to reach all the places Auntie or Baba is too old or too disabled to properly scrub.
After:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am not delighted.
I put in more water and ran the Steam Clean cycle an extra time. Even though I got a clean damp towel to wipe everything down as soon as the half hour cycle had finished, I still have some stains. And I still have this white film on the glass.
Unfortunately at this point I am too physically uncomfortable to try anything further.
At least it's safe to use?
I'll give it another go in two days.

I have spent my entire weekend off being a homebody and I almost feel like a human being again
That's not entirely true ig, Friday after work I went to the coworker I actually likes' house, they gave me a haircut and we hung out for a bit. Counting the haircut as my "cleaning/selfcare" thing for the day.
Yesterday I was gonna do the dishes... but then I spent almost 300 bucks at fleet farm instead. (My nice sorel winter boots have both developed cracks in the rubber that makes them waterproof... no good for work :( so I bought new, equally expensive, winter boots. Hopefully the carhartt boots are as trustworthy as their jackets.) I also did a ton of random organizing shit in my living room, put together a feather frame to cut down on that collection, etc.
Today I did the dishes! (And basically fuck all else! But dishes suck so I don't care.) I've been working on one of my twine rugs this evening to maybe start chipping away at that backlog, we'll see how far it gets.
Tomorrow I might prime some of my warhammer stuff after I get home from work, it should be nice enough the paint will behave and then I can not worry about it for the winter lol. I'd also like to hang a poster, I stopped at a cute art museum the last time I went home and got a poster of a pelican that's super pretty. Not sure where I'll put it though.... my living room is Animal Art but most of it is of animals I specifically worked with. Then again I do work with pelicans. Idk.
I'm pretty sure TB tests are this week at work too but that's pretty painless.

i did not accomplish much for naclyoho yesterday or the day before, just folded some laundry before going to bed each night (though i did finally catch up on a lot of work work on wednesday which was such a relief for my brain and my work life balance, so totally worth not getting a lot of cleaning done)
however being fully caught up on my laundry meant finally having to accept the fact that i do not have enough room for my clothes and i will not be able to weed out enough clothing to make it fit. so new task added to my list to buy a wardrobe or something because i straight up can't put all my laundry away

This afternoon, in a post-migraine "gonna move mountains, just watch me" haze, I have:
wiped down the dishwasher, and deep cleaned it with citric acid
organised the medicine cabinet (good grief, there was stuff in there that expired in 2015!)
untangled two sets of holiday lights (the candle-shaped sort) to separate the working set from the fubar one
located and put up a mini set of holiday lights in a fake shrub (dogwood cuttings stuck into a container - looks perfectly convincing in winter!) outside the front door
proceeded to hike into the pharmacy + recycling point at the supermarket to get rid of the old meds and broken holiday lights
also i have a load of laundry going
...and now I have this looming sense of dread that sometime soon, the universe is about to come collect its due, and I can't get anything done for the next two weeks or something 😬

NaClYoHo days 3-7
I stuck with laundry for days 3-6 because my cold was sucking. But I’m better now and ready to dive in!
Tonight, I managed to work through sanitizing more of the stuff that came from my parents’ nasty house (ick), cleaning the bathroom sink, and arranging some dried flowers in vases! PLUS two loads of laundry washed, dried, and put away, and a third that I may finish before bed.
Tomorrow’s plan is to scrub the stuff from my parents that needs SCRUBBING in the bathtub (truly do not underestimate how fuckin nasty this stuff is but also they’re gorgeous antiques or family heirlooms or I just think they’re neat *Marge with potato meme* and I don’t want to toss them) and then shower because all the nasty will be on me.
Thanks everyone for posting your updates! I enjoy reading about your progress, because it helps me to want to keep going too!

NaClYoHo Day 18, 19 + 20
Saturday started slow and with traveling to mom's home again. That cost spoons. But the cats were nice and I checked several bags of clothing for sweaters for mom.
On Sunday we drove to the cemetery to remove the leaves from two grave sites. After that, I washed a load of clothes for my aunt.
Today, I washed a load of mums towels and hung them on the clothesline and then I swept the stairs. After lunch I traveled home. And I did my own laundry in the evening and while waiting for it to be done, I cross stitched. Tiny Mouseloft kit is finished!

#naclyoho day 9:
- changed over the cat bowls for a clean set
- sprayed the weeds on the back pavers (I’m not sure what to do there… I like the idea of ground cover, but the weeds always end up a foot tall.)
- spread weed matting under the clothes line
- spread artificial turf over the weed mat
- hung bamboo screen on the fence
Tumblr media
Still need to deal with the calla lillies in the top right corner, and pull the weeds once they’re dead, but I’m pretty happy with it.
I may end up fake turfing the whole thing, I like it. Definitely need some new lights to hang on the clothes line

NaClYoHo Day 13
After being bedridden a good chunk of the 11th and all afternoon on the 12th, I'm so glad to be up and moving around today!
Today I: - Folded and put away the sheets I washed yesterday - Handwashed the pile of dishes on the counter that needed washing - Gave the bathroom a 10 minute tidy - Compiled and tossed the little garbages (bathroom, laundry) - Sent Husbff to the thrift store with a stack of donations - Flattened the pile of cardboard by the door - Sent in my EI sick leave report
We're hosting friends for games and dinner this afternoon, so I'm going to run the dishwasher before they get here and spend the rest of the afternoon and evening resting.
Coming up on the purchases list, our cheap old frying pan is on death's door, so I'm looking at a couple of secondhand cast iron ones online! Cast iron comes with a few pros and cons, but overall I think it's the best and most eco-friendly option in the long run.
Pros: - A good cast iron pan will last generations - Cast iron rarely needs to be washed - Cast iron can go into the oven - I can get a used cast iron that will last forever for the same amount I paid for my current dying-after-2-years nonstick frying pan
Cons: - When cast iron does need to be washed, it's more involved than washing a pan that isn't cast iron: the pan would need to be re-seasoned and thoroughly dried to prevent rusting. - Cast iron is very heavy and I have lost a LOT of my muscle mass since becoming housebound in August :(
If you have a cast iron pan I'd love to hear what you think of it and what your favourite cast iron recipes are!

This morning I took my shower in my mother's bathroom, because it's the easiest way to see how well everything works. Immediately afterwards I removed the shower head and set it soaking in a strong vinegar solution. These two things are related.😺
I also ran the water at full blast without the shower head to flush the rust from the lines. It looked like orange-flavored kool-aid. Reminder #874 why I'm replacing the galvanized pipes. But not today....
Instead I cleaned the living room. I moved the couch and coffee table off the green rug, and then vacuumed at least four cats-worth of fur from the rug, couch, and couch cushions. I removed all the assorted craft, cat care, and electronic detritus on the end table, and washed the top. Lamps dusted.

Photo descriptions in Alt text.
I decided to enrich my ttrpg enclosure by upgrading some organizational stuff.
I have owned these wooden boxes for years. They are great for tidying away minis or handout props, but within two weeks I stop seeing the boxes. That means I forget about their contents.
Maybe I can make the boxes stand out from the bookshelf a bit? Adorn with metaphors for the plot devices they should contain?
My first step on the little crate is to sand it down, at least around the edges. It's going back inside for tonight, because I cannot deal with the noise and smell of sawdust. Anyway, I want to install hinges on the lid so I can get rid of the nails.
Everything else needs at least a couple coats of this sparkly metallic blue stain. Except the coffee and lid -- those are for keeping me going.
I'm painting exclusively inside the cardboard box. Also they will stay in the box while they dry. I know that I will have spray, drips, and spills; I want to clean up easily, without damaging my home or the front garden.
.
Later:
Tumblr media
I thought a single coat to most surfaces would take me about fifteen minutes. I stopped here for the evening because I had been standing for over an hour.
The little cube takes the stain well! I continue to roll low on my minimal Mechanical Skills stat. Cube looks surprisingly even. I can see my haphazard brush stroke technique on the rectangular box. That one may require three coats to get a pleasing result.
I used the old smartphone box to wipe excess paint off of the paintbrush because I have no idea if it could look nice. What the hey, I don't have that phone anyhow.
