The dreadfulness of hell deepens our grateful praise for the salvation we have in Jesus Christ. Hell is what we deserve. And hell is what He experienced on the cross in our place.

some of my favorite shots from 2018, when i visited a Christian retreat my family used to stay at every year when i was a child. even as a kid i could tell that the place is saturated by all the prayer and worship that goes on there; it’s truly a peaceful place.
i was thinking recently that even if i had a job cleaning the retreat houses, it would still be enjoyable because of how i love this place. that reminded me of Psalm 84:10, “A single day in Your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.”
Heaven is such a place of beauty and peace and joy, that if all you did the whole day was open doors for people, it would be the greatest experience you ever had. God’s love radiating the atmosphere, the magnificence of the nature and the dwellings there.. Just being a door keep would be so much more than anything a billionaire could offer you.
"Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in Me. There is more than enough room in My Father’s home. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” (John 14:1-3)

1 Thessalonians 5 Annotated, pt 3
“For God has not destined us to [incur His] wrath [that is, He did not select us to condemn us], but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
<Predestination anyone? I genuinely am delighted by verses that could support a predestination worldview, because I didn’t grow up with that philosophy, and there are /so many/ verses that seem to apply. I am fascinated by it. But that is beside the point. The greater message of the verse is that we were not created for “the wrath that is coming” (1 Th 1:10) or the wrath that had “overtaken” the Jews (1 Th 2:14-16). Jesus made a path for us to gain salvation, and God /wants us/ to have salvation. God isn’t trying to keep us away.>
“Who died [willingly] for us, so that whether we are awake (alive) or asleep (dead) [at Christ’s appearing], we will live together with Him [sharing eternal life].”
<I’m not sure why Paul’s metaphor of being awake/asleep has suddenly changed. In earlier verses we had night and dark, when a thief could surprise you; so being asleep meant being caught unaware. And being awake meant being alert and of clear mind. But now we assume it means being alive/dead? Could Paul mean spiritually alive or dead, as in having a “dead” heart? BUT if that’s what he means, then he says ALL OF US get to live with Him. Maybe instead of eternal life, Paul meant “live together with Him” as in He will live in our hearts. Such as when Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is among us (Lk 11:20; Lk 17:20-21). Maybe living “together with Him” is our daily spiritual walk.>
“Therefore encourage and comfort one another and build up one another, just as you are doing.”
“Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to appreciate those who diligently work among you [recognize, acknowledge, and respect your leaders], who are in charge over you in the Lord and who give you instruction,”
<I like the combination of verses 11 and 12. Mutually building each other up, and respecting community members who are mentors, placed in positions to govern and instruct you. Even if we don’t like correction, we should respect the hard workers, the leaders, and the correction givers.>
“And [we ask that you appreciate them and] hold them in the highest esteem in love because of their work [on your behalf]. Live in peace with one another.”
<We really are called to be a community of servants. Those who serve each other should be held in highest regards. Those who give their time and energy to keep the community running smoothly should be highly respected.>
<An attempt at TL;DR of chapter 5 so far: We do not have to worry about the “day of the Lord” because we are children of the day; we are not of the night, and therefore we are not asleep. But there are some who are confused; some say “peace” when there is no peace, some are “asleep”, and some are “drunk”. Our protection is the assurance of salvation, because Jesus has provided salvation to us, whether we are awake or asleep. And since some of us are awake and some are asleep, we should build each other up and listen to our mentors.>

The ground beneath your feet was crumbling. Giving way due to your manic pace as you flew through the underbrush. Your hands barely have enough time to raise up to protect yourself. The small twinges of pain that appeared because of the brambles and low-hanging branches barely making an impact on you. You had only one goal in mind. Only one purpose as you took another sharp turn around a bend.
You could still hear the screams from your village. Hear the distorted voices in the distance calling out for help. Hear the horrid sound being interjected with the ravenous howls of hungry beasts.
The smell of blood and decay reaching you before the first animal ever did. Your father taking hold of you and shoving you towards the wood. His gaze desperate as he said his last words to you. “Go, Y/N. Run like you’ve never run before. They’re here now. Mother Miranda isn’t going to protect us any longer.”
You had hesitated. You didn't want to leave your father but he hadn’t let you. His gentle nudges becoming incessant shoves towards the foliage. “You need to run, iepuraș. Don’t look back no matter what you hear. Just keep running.”
With his words, you had done just as he told you. Trying to not let the screaming or the howls stop you. Trying to not let the fear shining in his eyes stop you. You didn’t want to think about what it meant for your father when the beasts finally did reach him.
Skidding to a stop, your chest heaves as you take in your surroundings. You knew that you had to begin moving soon. It was only a matter of time before the beasts caught your scent. You had only a small window of opportunity before you’d be captured too.
The sight of rustic stone work causes you to blanche. Fear shooting through your body as the knowledge of where you were came rushing to you. Castle Dimitrescu; the one place you had always been warned to never venture near. The tales of bloodshed and twisted horrors doing little to persuade you to try. Its foreboding presence is always looming over your village for as long as you’ve been alive. You never thought you would ever see it up close.
The intricate stonework winding up towards grand towers in the sky. Its color is a rich black in the setting light of day. You could tell that the castle was old, even barring the tales you had heard about it, from the weathered quality to its structure. Even though it was no doubt still taken care of. Standing the test of time despite everything.
A chilling feeling works its way up your spine. Causing the hairs on the back of your neck to stand on end. Your body stiffening as a cold cackle reverberates through the air. A sharp breath catching in your throat at the faint shifting of metal against the ground.
“Well, well, well.” The gruff voice purrs. “What do we have here? I don’t believe my dear sister let you out of your cage. So you must be a village girl.”
Flinching away from the strong grip suddenly on your face, your head is unceremoniously jerked towards the speaker. To a man with dark glasses and a cruel smirk on his face. Amusement clearly dancing through the expression. A twisted sense of glee lighting up his face even more when he saw your fear. “It’s a pity the doggies didn’t get to you too.” He pauses before a broad smile pulls his lips up. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun with you. Oh, Mother Miranda is going to love you.”
Your brow furrows. “Mother Miranda?”
At your words a bark-like laugh falls from his lips. “Yes, child, Mother Miranda. I do hope she’ll let me have you. You’d make the most interesting tool in my games. I’m certain we’d have a blast. Well,” His head tilts to the side. “I know I would.”
Trying to jerk your head away from his hold, you couldn’t stop the pleas from leaving your mouth. “I don’t have anything worth giving you. No money to my name or family that would be willing to pay it. I have nothing of value that you’d want to take.”
“Oh that’s not true child. You shouldn’t sell yourself so short.” His hand loosens ever-so-slightly but it does little to abate your nerves. Especially as his other hand shifts his hammer.
“I don’t have anything. Please.”
He grins. “While I do love to hear a beautiful maiden such as yourself beg, I must decline. As you do have something very special you can give me.”
You could feel tears welling up in your eyes. Fear began to run through your body as the man grew closer. “What?”
His face once again twists into a dark sense of amusement. “Your life.”
You didn’t see his other hand move. Didn’t hear or feel anything except for the sharp crack of pain against your skull. Your world is immediately consumed by darkness.
Only the sound of his maniacal laughter following you.
The rough stone scraping along your back is what roused you next. Your eyes blearily blinking open as you’re unceremoniously left against the hard ground. The basic stone ceiling being all that kept your attention for the moment. You could tell already, without even having to move too much, that you were restrained. The heavy presence of metal feeling like a sentence.
To what? You weren’t sure.
“Why did you bring her here, Heisenberg? She’s of no use to me.”
The female voice that spoke was familiar to you. You couldn’t quite grasp from where but you knew that you had heard it before. Lifting your head off the ground, you’re finally met with the sight of your captors.
A sight that quickly causes a chill to run down your spine.
Your original captor, Heisenberg, was lounged against a couch. A calm nonchalance surrounding him as a gleeful smile took over his features. His cruel intent still being as palpable even from the distance you were now at.
A hunched over figure standing just behind him. A crown of bones situated atop its head as heavy breathing reached your ears. The grotesque form causes your stomach to churn at the very sight. You had to turn your head away from it.
The other was in the form of a doll. Your body flinched away ever-so-slightly as it drew nearer. Its lifeless staring at you with something akin to interest before it scampers away. The clear barking order for it to do so coming from the woman who had spoken.
A woman that was standing in the middle of them all. Her black dress and veil obscuring the majority of her features from you. Though you could still feel the tangible power that radiated off of her body. The command she clearly held over the people in the room.
Mother Miranda-- through and through. No one but her held that type of power. The pull that she had on people.
It was a spell that was only broken by the arrival of the fifth person.
A heavy, yet graceful, gait announcing their presence before they even appeared. The faint clicking of heels against the stone floor telling you where they were. That they were growing closer and closer towards you by the second. Your body is already tensing at what monstrosity you would be subjected to at their arrival.
Nothing would have ever prepared you for what you saw.
A woman stops just within your field of vision. Glowing golden eyes taking in the room with a vague sense of interest. Painted red lips pulled into a small smirk as she finally settled her gaze on you. Raven black locks standing out against her pallid skin. Her clear beauty stands out even through the darkness. But that wasn’t what caused your breath to catch.
It wasn’t the way an exotic tinge of danger exuded from her.
It wasn’t because of the way she gracefully moved through the room. Her white dress shifted against her form with every minute movement.
It wasn’t even because of the way the dress looked on her body.
No. It all had to do with her height. She stood taller than any person you had ever seen; man or woman. Her imposing height did little to detract from natural elegance that seemed to lace itself within her movements. In fact it only seemed to enhance it.
Mother Miranda’s voice interrupted your thoughts. Your gaze being torn from her form towards Miranda’s. “You’re late, Alcina. I expect better from you.”
The woman, Alicna, offers an almost apologetic smile towards Mother Miranda. Her colossal from resting easily against the backrest of the couch. Her ankles crossing in the manner that only seemed to come from habit.
“I apologize, Mother Miranda. I got caught up with affairs at the castle.” She dips her head towards the black-cloaked woman. “It won’t happen again.”
Miranda sneers. “Make sure it doesn’t.” Pausing for a brief moment, Mother Miranda seemed to observe the room. Clear contemplation taking up most of her concentration-- until her gaze once again landed on you. “Now it’s time to figure out what we’re going to do with our little friend.”
Almost immediately Alcina and Heisenberg speak up.
“I found her. It should be I that gets to keep her.” No. Anything but that.
“I would have the most use of her. She does look quite appetizing.” I don’t think I want to know what that means.
At Alcina’s words, Heisenberg scoffs. “I’ll have the most use of her, dear sister. You’ll just hide her away in the private rooms of your castle. In the dark. Playing games with her that would end like it started; boringly.” He turns towards Mother Miranda. “Let me have her. I know exactly what I wish to do.”
“And you’ll just toy with her for only a few moments before she’s crushed by one of your contraptions. There’s no finesse to what you do, dear brother.” Her golden gaze flickers towards you for a moment. An almost contemplative look flashing across her beautiful features. “I’ll make sure I have something spectacular planned for her.”
Mother Miranda speaks before they can argue any further. And by the tone of slight agitation in her voice you can tell that this was a common occurrence. Your body shifted away from her ire even as you were restrained, almost painfully, from moving any further.
“Enough. Alcina you will get the girl.” At Heisenberg’s whine, she snaps at him. “There will not be any more complaints regarding this issue. You’re dismissed.”
The next time you blinked she was gone.
Your head is already plopping down against the ground. Despite the harsh greeting it got in response. You couldn't believe that this was your life now. You had just been sold to a woman, while undeniably attractive, that would sooner rip out your spine then let you walk free.
At least it wasn’t Heisenberg.
The thought only brings you a modicum of comfort.
The sudden looming shadow around doing quick work to wipe out what was left. Your eyes trailing up well muscled legs, across a white-clad torso, an elegant neck, to finally reach her amused gaze. Even if her amusement was tinged with a darker entity that you truly didn’t want to think about.
“Well, darling, it looks like you’re all mine,” she purrs as she leans towards you. Her hand coming up to brush against your cheek. Whether it be a way for her to maintain control or for her to know what you felt like; you hadn’t the slightest idea. “Aren’t you going to say anything to me? I did just save you from my brother.”
You still weren’t sure if that was a good thing or not.
Raising your gaze to meet hers, you clench your jaw. Trying to prepare a biting retort to her clear teasing. Hoping that you’d be able to get even with her in some small way. If you were going to die you were going to die your way.
However, the moment you opened your mouth, another two words appeared. “You’re beautiful.”
The moment that words slipped from your lips, you could feel your face heat up. Your body automatically tensing at the knowledge of you had just said to her. Fortunately she seemed to be just as floored as you. Shock clearly showing itself across her elegant features before an almost feral smile takes its place. Her arms wrapping around to hoist you in the air.
But, before she did, she whispered one last thing towards you.
“I’m going to have so much fun with you, pet.”

I saw a post by you just a bit ago (that i already rb'd because it's great), but in it you mentioned that Jesus never told us to go out and convert people to Christianity. that's completely right as far as i can tell, since the word "christian" didn't even exist until about halfway through the book of acts. but i do wonder about the line "none can come to the Father except through me" that Jesus said at one point (can't remember exact details). i'm curious about your opinions on that in regards to beliefs? obviously evangelism has gone WAY off course from its intended purpose, but wasn't the whole point of Jesus coming so that people would believe and be saved? or is that entirely just indoctrination that i've missed over the years?
Hey hi, sorry for the delay! Great question!
If Jesus is “the Way,” can Christians embrace an inclusivist vision of salvation?
Anyone wondering about the post therealandian is referencing, you can see it here.
Summary of that post: Jesus did not command us to convert everyone to “a new religion called Christianity”; rather, “Jesus called us to go into the world and proclaim good news - news of liberating love for everyone - and to make disciples, or in other words, invite people to follow in the example of Jesus. To emulate the life Jesus lived and work to create the world he dreamed of. And did you know that you can do that without ever making someone a Christian?”
But, as you rightly note in your ask, there certainly are passages in the Greek Bible (New Testament) that take or seem to take a more exclusivist angle. The words attributed to Jesus in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth, and the light; no one comes to the Father except through me,” is a huge one!
So this post will address that verse, and then explore the concept of being “saved.”
[Side Note about how complicated things can get when exploring the Bible through a critical lens....skip over this little section if you don’t want unnecessary complications lol]
So. I could add a ton of complexity to this conversation by bringing up, like, biblical “meta”....
about how for the author of John’s Gospel, a big goal was to evangelize — to convince people that the up-and-coming (and at that time small and persecuted) religion centered around Jesus was worth converting to — and thus John’s Jesus makes a lot of statements about being The One Way.....
and we can ask the question of whether Jesus “really” said everything any Gospel writer attributed to him, or whether they made up or altered some of it.....
but dang, that’ll get really complicated!! (If anyone wants to hear more about that hot mess, i’ll dig out some of my seminary notes...)
But for this post, I’ll just take the Gospels at their word — I’ll respond with the assumption that Jesus did “actually say” everything John’s Gospel says he said. Because even if he did, we can still see radical inclusivism at work in Jesus’s words and ministry — especially when we don’t look only at any singular quote from him, but take in everything he’s quoted as saying in John as a whole.
The Gospels: For every exclusivist passage, there is an inclusivist counter-narrative
When we only look at one Bible verse at a time, it’s easy to find one to support just about any perspective on anything. Dig up one verse and you can claim “The Bible definitively says all people all go to heaven”; dig up another, and you can claim “The Bible definitively says only Christians go to heaven” (or even that only Christians of one specific denomination go to heaven....).
This is why it’s important to take a broader view when studying scripture. I write about my own general framework for interpreting scripture here, if you’re interested — in includes understanding that the Bible is a large collection of texts written by a whole bunch of different people.
It gets extra wild within the Gospel of John, where one book holds such counter-narratives within itself! So let’s bring in an expert: Barbara Brown Taylor, with her book Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others.
(By the way, there’s an episode of my podcast where I read from that book extensively. You might enjoy the whole episode, as it’s a discussion on how to ready yourself for respectful interfaith conversations.)
Taylor talks about how there’s a lot of triumphalism in the Bible — an attitude of superiority regarding one’s own beliefs or gods. But Taylor shows how for every triumphalist text in the Bible, you can also find a text that embraces religious pluralism — just as for any misogynistic text you can find a text that empowers women, etc. There are counter-narratives to every narrative; God’s liberation and welcome shine through the xenophobia and bias of scripture’s very human authors:
“...When I run into a hard corner of Christian thinking about the subordination of women, I remember that the angel Gabriel did not ask Mary’s father if it would be all right for her to bear a son out of wedlock; Gabriel asked her. When I am walloped by Christian condescension toward those who are not Christian, I remember how many religious strangers played lead roles in Jesus’s life: the Canaanite woman who expanded his sense of agency, the Samaritan leper who showed him what true gratitude looked like, the Roman centurion in whom he saw more faith than he had ever seen in one of his own tribe. ...”

What counter-narratives are there for John 14:6?
Here’s what Taylor says in Holy Envy about John 14:6 in particular:
“Most of us prefer [the scripture passages] that grant us special privilege. For Christians, the most potent one is John 14:6, in which Jesus says, ‘No one comes to the Father except through me.’ Here is the bedrock assurance that Christians alone have access to God. But why is this verse more important than one that comes two chapters earlier in John’s Gospel? ‘Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me,’ Jesus says in John 12:44. Maybe my hearing is off, but those two verses sound different to me. So why do so many Christians know the former saying but not the latter one? Could it be that our favorite verses are the ones that make us feel most right?
‘I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold.’ That is something else Jesus says in John’s Gospel [in John chapter 10]. He does not elaborate, but I like imagining the God of many sheep, many folds, many favorites, many mansions. This is how far my holy envy has brought me: from fearing that Jesus will be mad at me for smelling other people’s roses to trusting that Jesus is the Way that embraces all ways. Because there is only one of me, I can only walk one way at a time, but that does not prevent me from believing that other people might be walking their ways with equal devotion and good will.”
Another couple passages of John that I enjoy as a balance to the narrower sounding “I am the Way”:
Jesus’s comment that the wind (or Spirit) “blows where it wills” (John 3:8) – God, the Holy Spirit, Truth, are not owned by us. God is free, and reveals Themself where we might never expect – even in “non-believers,” because we do not need to seek and find God – God seeks and finds us.
“And I, when I am lifted from the earth, will draw all to myself” (John 12:32)
Finally, when we move beyond any single verse of John to the Bible as a whole, we find story after story countering the idea that one must be a Christian (or belong to any specific religion or group) to be saved, or loved by God, or good, or any such thing.
Barbara Brown Taylor points out many of these biblical counter-narratives to the idea of exclusivism:
“Once my holy envy led me to ask more of my tradition than the narrative of exclusive salvation and everlasting triumph, I began to search for counternarratives that sounded more like Jesus to me. In particular, I looked for stories that supported Christian engagement with religious strangers — not as potential converts but as agents of the God who transcends religion and never met a stranger.
Beginning with the Persian magi in Matthew’s Gospel and ending with the Roman centurion who recognizes Jesus as the Son of God, the Gospels are full of such characters — people who come from beyond the tribe to bless the tribe and then return to where they came from. ...”
See this post for the full passage of her book that explores the stories of a huge number of these “religious strangers,” from Melchizedek to Ruth to the Syrophoenician woman.
To Taylor, these tales are far more surprising to find in the Bible than the various verses that make triumphalist or exclusivist claims. It’s not surprising to hear John’s author claim that only through Jesus can one come to the Father, an apologetic argument for why people should convert to Christianity. What is surprising and therefore a beautiful testament to the Divine working through the human in scripture is that there are also those counter-narratives of religious acceptance and pluralism. As she says,
“By all rights, you would expect such scriptures to protect a religious community’s privileges and diminish the rights of those who do not belong to it, but that is not the case. Instead, these communities have chosen to preserve commands that clarify God’s care for outsiders as well as insiders, religious strangers as well as friends.”
As she closes her chapter that discusses all of this,
No one owns God. God alone knows what is good. For reasons that will never be entirely clear, God has a soft spot for religious strangers, both as agents of divine blessing and recipients of divine grace — to the point that God sometimes chooses one of them over people who believe they should by all rights come first. This is a great mystery, but it does nothing to obscure the great commandment. In every circumstance, regardless of the outcome, the main thing Jesus has asked me to do is love God and my neighbor as religiously as I love myself. The minute I have that handled, I will ask for my next assignment. For now, my hands are full.”
What does it mean to “be saved,” anyway?
All right, moving on to the next bit of your ask: “Wasn't the whole point of Jesus coming so that people would believe and be saved?”
Yes, and no. The problem is that the way most Christians talk about “saving” these days isn’t what it means in the original Greek or Hebrew of scripture.
Nowhere in the Gospels does Jesus say that being saved means what most Christians have come to understand it meaning — something that comes only after you are baptized / accept Jesus as Lord; something that requires being a Christian; something that mainly has to do with the world to come......
Roger Wolsey has some good commentary on what “saved” does tend to mean in the Gospels. He talks about how in the Hebrew of Jesus’s own holy scriptures, salvation means “healing, wholeness, and well-being” rather than being about “believing or accepting certain intellectual assertions”:
“Jesus saved (provided salvation to) numerous people long before he was killed... This reality clearly undermines the idea that no one is saved but for Jesus’ blood shed on a cross. In the Gospels, salvation is experienced when one accepts God’s healing, grace, and love and responds in ways that show it. Jesus also referred to this state of being as experiencing ‘abundant/eternal life’ and living in ‘the kingdom of God.’
I think Jesus’s idea of “saving” shines clearly in his words in John 10:10: “I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
Not “I have come to kickstart a brand new religion that you must join in order to obtain this abundant life I’m talking about.” Nothing about certain dogma or praxis. The only action he demands of us is the natural response to this abundant love bestowed freely — to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
Examples of Jesus “saving” people in the Gospels tend to focus on removing the things that are impeding their abundant life right here and now, rather than in some world to come. Jesus of the Gospels is far more focused on God’s Kin(g)dom arriving here in this world.
You can explore the 108(!) occurrences of the Greek word for “save” in the New Testament here to get a feel for what kinds of situations Jesus saved people from and into.

These ideas of Jesus’s salvation also fit more into the ideas shared in the Hebrew Bible. As Dr. Amy-Jill Levine writes of the cry for salvation (Hosanna!) that rings through the Psalms and elsewhere in scripture:
"From what do we seek salvation? From sin, yes. But also from pain, from despair, from loneliness, from poverty, from oppression. We are all in need of some form of salvation. Indeed, the idea of salvation for most of the Scriptures of Israel is not about spiritual matters, but physical ones: the Passover, the setting of the Passion narrative, is about salvation from slavery. God hears our cries. And the stories remind us that people, still, cry out to be saved. Will our cries be heard by others? Will we hear the cries of others? Will God act? Will we?”

Thank you for asking the question and yeah, I can’t recommend Taylor’s book Holy Envy enough for Christians wishing to come to a better understanding of how to cultivate their own faith while fully respecting and appreciating the faiths of others.

3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.

When Jesus tasted the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and died. John 19:30
“It is finished.”
Stop and listen a moment. Let the words wind through your heart. Imagine the cry from the cross. The sky is dark. The other two victims are are moaning. Jeering mouths of the crowd are silent. Perhaps there is thunder. Perhaps there is weeping. Perhaps there is silence. Then Jesus draws in a deep breath, pushes his feet down on that Roman nail, and cries, “It is finished!”
What was finished?
The history-long plan of redeeming man was finished. The message of God to man was finished. The works done by Jesus as a man on earth were finished.... The sting of death had been removed. It was over.
