In a sheltered front garden on the south coast of Britain the Salvia rosmarinus (rosemary, rose of the sea, southernwood) is already flowering. This aromatic evergreen will bloom from early spring through summer and into autumn. The plant was even adding foliage and flowers to a shop window display further down the street.

Here’s a good example of “nectar robbing”. This bumblebee is way too big to get inside these salvia flowers and its tongue isn’t long enough to reach, so it is going to the back of each flower near the stem and biting a tiny hole to get to the nectar that way. It’s called nectar robbing because the flower’s nectar is taken without it being pollinated.
