ahh okay sorry it's literally a month late 😭

a lot of people saw this post and apparently didn't know the mark as read feature existed (which ??? i'm 95% sure y'all will recognise it once you read this post)

so anyways. say you're like me and are scrolling for a very specific fic but during that scrolling you pass a fic that also intrigues you. but you don't wanna read it yet. you also don't trust yourself to open a new tab and not lose it so you use the mark for later button!

you'll see it at the top of any fic (example below)

click this. and boom! fic has now been added to your mark for later list. which can be found under history and marked for later on your account

but if you're anything like me you probably won't actually use that list because you switch hyperfixations far too often

it does come in handy still though because when (read: if) you return to this ship/fandom and are yet again scrolling for a good fic it can help you identify fics you've read before or not. usually i'll see something that sounds interesting, open it, and either it will be bookmarked already or it will have this new button at the top:

mark as read my beloved 🥰 means this fic caught my eye in the past but i never got around to actually reading it. so yay! new fic to read!!

(unless, like in the original post, i somehow either forgot to then mark the fic as read after reading it or for some reason never bookmarked it and then i trick myself into thinking i've not seen it 💀)

Rough Surfaces

There was an inherent loneliness to being Captain America.

And it wasn’t like Sam had never been lonely before. He'd been lonely, he’d been alone, and he’d been lonely and alone, but there was something about this, a feeling so old he was surprised he could still feel it; that it still affected him.

That hollow silence that was once filled with the sound of life.

Figaro meowed and Alpine didn’t answer, and for a split second, Sam forgot. He panicked.

Then he remembered, and it weighed him down, an ache so deep it felt engraved into his very being.

And really, it was fine. It wasn’t like he couldn’t do this alone, he could, but.

He didn’t want to.

Mostly, he had started to believe he wouldn’t have to.

Probably the most obvious choice. This one is very important and personal to me and while I’m slowly working on it, it’s definitely one I’m constantly thinking about. It started as just a small piece about Sam and Bucky fighting in the rain and grew legs and wings and look at us now, five chapters in and it’s a feast of angst and feels and growth and they’re slowly but surely gonna make their way back together.

Sam imagined wedding planning was already stressful enough without fighting bad guys on a regular basis.

As it was, Sam was Captain America, and he had a job to do.

He also had a very disgruntled fiancé who followed him wherever he went.

Another fairly obvious choice. I always talk about how proud I’m of this fic and it remains true. IMO it’s some of my best writing. All the little details and how it comes full circle. Really some of the most fun I had writing a fic.

After several attempts at getting back in the dating game, Bucky bites the bullet and asks Sam for dating advice. Chaos ensues.

(Or, Bucky and Sam are dating, and they're the last to find out about it.)

This one was very fun to write. I miss writing them as oblivious idiots in love. All the chaos and humor and drama and fluff and pining. It’s also probably my most popular sambucky fic.

You're my Calling (Cure my Longing)

Sam turns mid-sentence, gesturing ferociously at Bucky. The couple he’s talking to has big smiles that get bigger as he goes on, turning his back away from Bucky, talking with his whole body.

Bucky frowns and downs the last of his beer, debating if he should go over and join the conversation that’s obviously about him or if he should stay where he is, by the sidelines, watching from far away and–

Then Carlos is passing him and saying, “Congratulations, Bucky. Took y’all long enough,” and Bucky pauses, bewildered into stillness, but Carlos is gone before Bucky has the chance to ask what in the world he’s talking about.

I love this one so much. Writing drunk Sam was super fun and I should do it more often. Was just really an absolute joy to write all around. The old couple and Sam being so touchy-feely and them talking about getting cats. Sigh. I need to write more fics like this lol.

Sam’s answer to this question has stayed the same throughout the day. He’s going to keep doing what he does best, fighting the good fight, protecting the people, and giving help to those who need it.

The thing is, all day, no one has asked Bucky what’s next for him. So, even though the way she worded it implied she’s asking Bucky next, Bucky’s completely blindsided when she turns to him and says, “What about you, Sergeant?”

There’s a long pause, Bucky’s mind blanking. He must have stared too long at the interviewer because Sam subtly nudges him.

So, without giving it much thought, Bucky says, “I’m gonna keep doing what I do best, watching Cap’s six and being an unpredictable, unstable human being.”

“That’s quite hot.”

Oblivion idiots? In my sambucky? More likely than you think. Writing this Sary was the best thing ever! So much fun and memories and metaphorically hovering over her shoulder. She’s a fantastic writer and a very patient and kind person and made this one of the most amazing writing experiences ever. 10/10 experience, can’t wait to do it again.

Sam bustles around the kitchen, cleaning off counters he’d deep cleaned two days ago, grabbing dishes out of the dishwasher that really could wait until tomorrow morning, putting some elbow grease into trying to get out the stubborn spot on their stove that’s been there since they moved in and that Bucky’s not sure will ever go away. They’ve been home from their last mission about a sum total of fifteen minutes, and Sam’s still in frenzy mode.

If there’s anything Bucky’s learned in all the years he’s been around his partner, it’s that Sam’s never really quite figured out how to slow it down.

Good thing Bucky’s always happy to help.

He straightens up from where he’s leaning against their kitchen’s entryway and walks over towards Sam, purposefully making his footfalls a little louder than normal so he doesn’t sneak up behind him.

“We’ve been awake for almost thirty-six hours, sweetheart,” Bucky almost croons, cozying up behind Sam and wrapping his hands around his front. Bucky himself doesn’t really need the sleep—not the way that Sam does—but he’s found Sam’s a little bit more willing to be pulled into slumber if they’ve both gone without for a while.

Just a little, though.

“I’m so close to getting this grease stain out,” Sam says, huffing a bit between words, his metaphorical feathers ruffled up, trying his best to resist Bucky’s attempts to get him to sleep.

Bucky knows Sam isn’t getting that stain out, knows that vibranium wool wouldn’t be enough to get that stain out, but Sam’s working at it like he’ll get it out if it’s the last thing he ever does, Bucky’s soft crooning be damned.

Time to bring out the big guns, Bucky thinks, nuzzling at Sam’s neck before peppering soft kisses all over it.

It slows Sam down enough that Bucky knows he’s at least got an opportunity here, so he kisses a little slower, a little more sensual.

They’re both too tired to do anything tonight, but neck kisses have always been Sam’s kryptonite; they might be the only thing capable of distracting him when he’s this wound up.

The mission hadn’t exactly been a pretty one, after all.

“Wanna snuggle up to you tonight, angel,” he whispers in between kisses, voice soft and adoring. “Hold you all night long, keep you warm.”

That’s the last push Sam needs to relax his shoulders, setting his cleaning supplies over to the side and breathing in deeply as Bucky places one last kiss on his neck.

“Ready for bed, angel?” Bucky asks, as quiet as he can, and Sam just turns around in his arms in answer, wrapping his own arms around Bucky’s back and tucking his face into the crook of Bucky’s neck instead.

“Shower first?” he mumbles, the already quiet question muffled by the words being spoken into his neck, but Bucky hears him anyway, bending down just enough to pick Sam up, wrapping his legs around his waist and carrying him off to the shower.

Sam doesn’t take his face out of the crook of Bucky’s neck until he’s placed back on his feet, the warm spray at his back still cooler than the feeling of Bucky’s hands on his abdomen, sudsing him up.

It’s a quick shower, warm but mostly utilitarian, a few kisses when Bucky just can’t help himself aside. They dry off only enough to not be uncomfortable between the sheets, and Bucky picks an already almost asleep Sam up one last time to carry him over to bed.

Sam immediately turns over to lay half on top of him, burying his face in Bucky’s neck once again, like it’s a barrier to keep out everything else. Bucky knows it won’t be long until Sam moves—knows Sam sleeps like a hurricane when he feels safe enough to, always looking for the cool spot—but it’s enough to warm Bucky all over for now.

“Good night, sweetheart,” he says, wrapping his arm in tighter around Sam. “I love you.”

All he gets is Sam’s soft, slow breathing in reply, but he knows Sam falling asleep next to him that easily is an “I love you” in its own right.

Looking for fic recs!

Anyone know of some really good TFATWS rewrite fics? They can be shippy or entirely gen, don't care.

Basically, I annoyed myself thinking of all the themes, plots, ideas, social commentary, etc. that the show botched or didn't commit to and now I'm wondering if there's any great Fix-its, Rewrites and/or entirely Alternate-Plot we-could-had-it-all type fics out there in the ao3 wilderness.

Things I liked in the show:

- Sam grappling with taking up the shield, with it's history, it's legacy, America etc

- Bucky reconciling with his WS past

- Joaquin Torres. (My precious. You're perfect.)

- Sam's family and hometown. (Love you all. Except that bank dude. Fuck that guy)

- Isaiah Bradley and Eli. Love you. And obviously important for Sam to know about. Isaiah's story deserves to be heard.

- Sam and Bucky being a Team. Don't take my boat scene from me. 🤣😅

-Obviously Sam has to become Cap lol

Can still be used, but with discretion lol

- Zemo and John Walker. So long as we all remember they are Bad Dudes. Use sparingly and with a point, i.e. only to further Sam and Bucky's arcs since They Are The Title Characters.

- Sharon Carter. I'm on the fence with turning her into a baddie. Alts/Rewrites can obviously change that direction. But if a baddie, I just need it to make sense 😭

I could go on. But you get the gist. Basically fic recs that treat Sam and Bucky as active protagonists, and with respect. (I draw a distinction between characters in a story being disrespectful dicks and the actual Story being disrespectful to it's lead characters, if that makes sense.)

this is a bit of an unconventional approach but i simply refuse to write a small breakup fic in addition to the big breakup fic lol

Sam’s chest was still heaving, sweat cooling on his warm skin, lashes heavy and wet, when the words escaped him.

“Did you mean it?”

Bucky froze mid-step, the light from the en-suite behind him giving him a bright aura in the dim bedroom.

Sam sat up, leaning on the backboard of the bed, pulling the covers up to his chest.

It didn’t help. He didn’t feel any less vulnerable or naked.

Bucky sighed, bringing himself closer to the bed, hand tightening around the washcloth, always nice and warm and damp.

The silence stretched, and Sam’s nerves frayed, and he found himself regretting speaking at all.

Maybe it didn’t matter; maybe it meant nothing. People always said things they didn’t mean during sex. Or right after, in this case.

“In what world would I say I love you and not mean it, Sam?”

Sam felt the words slowly sinking in, burning him from the inside out.

He pushed back the covers, jumping to his feet. His stomach felt tight, and he wanted to get away from this room and from Bucky’s determined gaze.

He plucked the washcloth out of Bucky’s grip, wiping himself down before throwing it away and grabbing his clothes, putting them on with jerky moves.

“Sam,” Bucky called, voice low and tight.

“No,” Sam said sharply, and he turned back to Bucky once he was fully dressed, pointing at him accusingly. “No, because this is supposed to be casual. No feelings, no attachment. No fucking feelings, Bucky.”

Bucky scoffed. “Oh, please, when has this ever been casual? When I spent Christmas with your family or when you held my hand during my dad’s funeral? When we moved in together? Adopted a cat? Then another one so she’s not lonely? You wear my sweater when you’re cold and run your fingers through my hair when I can’t sleep. This stopped being casual long ago and you know it.”

Sam’s eyes burned, swallowing thickly as he stared at Bucky and his stormy eyes, blue and deep and earnest. A home away from home.

“But,” Sam said, sounding desperate even to his own ears. “We promised. No feelings, no labels. Separate rooms.”

Bucky stepped closer, grabbing Sam’s hands in his own. “We don’t need labels or to share a room. Sweetheart, we don’t even need words. All I want is you, here with me in our home.”

“But it’s not fair,” Sam croaked, “if I can’t say it back.”

“You don’t need to.”

Sam went to open his mouth, his argument at the tip of his tongue, but Bucky dropped his hands and grabbed his face instead.

“You never eat plums, yet you always remember to bring some home. You watch my favorite movies with me, even though you think action movies are dumb.”

“They are.”

Bucky’s lips twisted in a fond smile.

“You don’t need to say it,” Bucky repeated. “It’s in everything you do. So what we made promises long ago? So what you don’t want labels or to say some words. So fucking what, Sam?”

Sam’s breath stuttered out of his chest, bringing his hands up to hold into Bucky, tightening them around his forearms.

“Shit,” he said, heart skipping in his chest.

“Yeah,” Bucky laughed lightly, eyes as bright as a clear sky. “That was my reaction too.”

“Bucky.”

“I know,” Bucky said softly, “I know, sweetheart.”
