Hello! I hope your day/evening is going well. Since it's missing Sam hours, can you share your favorite Sam headcanons that you don't see around much? (And maybe a disliked headcanon you see around all the time 👀)

Hi! My day is going well, thank you! Hope yours is too.

It’s always missing Sam Wilson hours in this house, so here’s a list of some headcanons:

Sam had wanted to fly ever since he started walking. He’d always been fascinated by birds and butterflies and planes and their wings and their ability to soar through the sky. He would sit by the windows and watch them for hours on end.

He was probably very excited the first time he was on a plane, and it was like a dream come true. He begged for the window seat and his parents agreed because they knew how happy it would make him. He stared out the window the whole flight, basically whooping every time he saw a bird fly close.

He started reading books about birds the minute he learned how to read. He’s definitely the kind of person who randomly tells you bird facts mid conversation. It’s endlessly endearing.

I think he was pretty young when he realised he’s attracted (exclusively) to men. Maybe it was the first time he came across the word gay and its definition or a picture or a poem and he was like oh, this is me. I feel like this. He didn’t tell anyone for the longest time.

The first person he came out to was his mom. Maybe he was staying up late to study. It had been a long week at school and some of his classmates were saying just casual homophobic things and it got to him and he hated how he couldn’t do or say anything about it. He went to the kitchen mostly looking for a distraction, and he saw his mom there, just sitting at the table, and he took a seat opposite her and just poured his heart out. These conversations are always easier in the dark, quite nights, after all. She held him in her arms for hours, and they talked until the sun was rising.

Sarah found out next. He didn’t exactly mean to tell her, but he thought he had the house to himself and he was making out with his first boyfriend and Sarah came home early and walked in on them and it was one of the most embarrassing moments of his life. Her first words were, really, Sam? A white boy?

Riley was his first true love. Sam was young and reckless and a thrill chaser and he fell hard and fast. Their whole relationship was like that, a fast, fast burn. Sam was chasing that thrill of being in love, enjoying all the stolen kisses and whispered words.

Riley was also his first heartbreak. After he was gone, Sam thought for sure he would never love again, simply because his heart was too torn apart. It was true for many years.

As quick as it was with Riley, it was as slow with Steve.

Maybe it was the point they were at their lives. Maybe because they were both lonely and broken, but they were so gentle and slow with each other, like they knew how fragile their hearts were. It was love, and it was beautiful, but it was never going to work. It was still worth it, because Sam and Steve were right for each other, but time wasn’t on their side.

Sam’s entire relationship with Bucky was simultaneously the most complicated and simple thing ever.

I like to think Sam didn’t even realise he was in love with Bucky until he was in too deep, because there was always a feeling of fondness for that old, white man who loved staring so much. They were already as close as two people could be, they knew each other inside out, they were comfortable with each other, so how would Sam know that that feeling in his chest was because he was actually in love with the guy?

It took them a long time to get together, wary and weary as they (Sam) were, but once they got together (after the most over-the-top, grand love confession in the history of love confessions), they were the most annoyingly in love couple around.

Sam never wanted to get married, mostly because he didn’t think he would find someone to love and be loved by again, but it was a quiet night in and Bucky was reading his book while Sam pretended to watch whatever was playing on the screen and the words we should get married were out of his mouth before he really thought about it. Bucky stared at him for the longest time.

They got married within the week. The next mission, Sam left with a ring around his neck and Bucky’s last-name next to his own.

sam and bucky have weekly date nights

some of these include going to the arcade bc buckys never bin (despite this he ends up being better then sam at some of the games which leads to them getting into a competition on who can get the most tickets) and winning each other prizes

staying in and watching cheesy movies and making fun of them together

going to museums while sam teases bucky about being old

going to those clubs that have a different eras as themes every other day so bucky can show off his moves whiles sam stands on the sidelines awkwardly bc he doesn’t know the dances (not to worry bucky teaches him some and drags him to the dance floor with him)

lake dates just lake dates could be fishing could be a picnic or swimming but it needs to be by a lake idk why i can just see it happening

Bucky as a down on his luck, kinda hopeless Billy Crocker. Who is shamelessly pining after society's elite, ex-bachelor Sam. Who is now to wed the 'ice cold' Russian heiress Natasha. While sultry night club's Steve is head over heels for Bucky.

Is this an elaborate ploi to get me a big, cheesy 'It's de-lovely' sambucky duet?

Maybe. But it'd be cute.

Sam being so out of Bucky's league, but he'll risk it all to try and convince him. Turning out to be kind of an asshole when he lets public enemy no. 1 get to his head. But fixing it for Sam.

Sam Wilson for the ask game.

1: sexuality headcanon

Bi. In the comics, it's self explanatory. In the mcu, you could probably make a case for him being gay or even ace because we're given so little. But idk he still seems bi to me. Maybe it's the sleeves, maybe it's the anxiety.

2: otp

Sam is a very shippable character, and I'm partial to a lot of them, but MCU-inspired sambucky is just top tier.

3: brotp

Redwing. Also Sarah.

Oh and can I say I would like a more meaningful reunion with nightshade? A version of her who actually resembles her? That could be fun.

4: notp

Zemo, any iteration thereof. Also Tony, for weirdly similar reasons (I.e. staggering ooc). In the same vein, feel the need to express my gratitude that the comics are acting like Jet Zola doesn't exist because yeah.. that's just a whole pile of yikes.

5: first headcanon that pops into my head

Comics: Mel was his first everything.

Also comics: indefensible hc but I feel like he's shorter than his official height.

MCU: Junior gymnastics champion. Red and white costume just like the Falcon outfit.

6: favorite line from this character

"Can't I be a little bit of both?"

7: one way in which I relate to this character

We're very different, but I guess we share the same kind of navel gazing worries - very "how am I coming across?"

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character

Any financially obligated and/or censor mandated US propaganda stuff. Not a fan, but it is what it is.

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?

So, what i would do is get some ready made puff pastry. Roll it out just a little bit to get it thinner. Sprinkle it with castor sugar OR maybe smear some apple sauce on it. Not too much, because of the moisture, but for a richer sweetness.

Then sprinkle powdered cinnamon and maybe also ginger and allspice or cloves. A real winter spices vibe.

Then cut it length ways into long strips. Roll them into wheels, then place them on their sides on a lined baking tray, plenty of space between them.

Bake for at least ten minutes, maybe fifteen in a medium oven (idk I am literally making this up - just check them and go by eye). Sprinkle a little extra cinnamon and some icing sugar while they're still hot, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

hmmm let's see. ok in no particular order, and as always all of these are sambucky:

1. ruffling feathers, 5k, T

Bucky confesses his feelings for Sam – to a pigeon. Fortunately for everyone involved, Sam can talk to birds.

I almost stopped writing this multiple times coz I thought it was too ridiculous XD but I'm glad I kept going. the response it received was something I genuinely didn't expect, but I really had so much fun writing from such a unique POV. I think about revisiting this world a lot, so who knows what might happen.

2. the culmination of every decision you ever made, 1.5k. T

Sam takes a walk down memory lane, trying to pinpoint exactly when he and Bucky started falling for each other.

one of my earliest works ever (I think it's the third?) and one I still look so fondly upon. I just remember being new to all of this, new to writing, new to fanfiction, not to fandom, and just the excitement I'd felt at having an idea and following through with it. plus the idea is one that I really love - the idea that some decision you make, small or big, can change your life drastically without you realizing it. and also the fact that Sam and Bucky, guys born decades apart, really should've never had met, and yet here they are, hopelessly in love with each other, is something I'm always a sucker for.

3. Firsts & Lasts, 600 words, T

You never know that your last time is going to be your last.

Sam considers his lingering feelings for Riley, and his developing ones for Bucky.

I'm still salty about the mistake I made posting this one making it get pushed to the back of the ao3 feed, so many people missed it. it's one of my favorite fics I've ever written, and one of my earliest attempts at exploring Sam's trauma and grief. decidedly the main focus isn't sambucky but is Sam trying to make peace with the fact that he's allowed to move on (after Riley) and is allowed to fall in love with new people (Bucky obviously lol)

4. to fly toward a secret sky, 4k, T

It starts with a spontaneous idea.

Not a promising start, granted, but if it makes you feel any better, it isn’t Bucky’s.

another one I didn't expect to get such an overwhelming response. I just wanted to write about two things I love: poetry and Sam speaking Arabic, and many people seemed to enjoy it too.

5. hoax, 1k, T

He cannot fathom how the same gentle presence that has been sharing his space, sleeping next to him, waking him up with hot coffee and tender kisses is the same ominous one that has ended a life, a friendship, a promise, and maybe more all those years ago.

look, I don't write sad endings, I don't read sad endings, and yet this happened, I had to literally restrain myself from turning back and making the ending happy. funnily enough it was born from a passage I had written for another fic but it didn't quite work with it, and I loved the passage too much to just hit delete, and thus this fic was born. the hc of the Winter Soldier being the one who'd killed Riley is unnecessarily cruel and yet I had to write it, at least this one time.

I knew it was the crux of their problem the moment they started acting out. They see Sarah as their self-insert because they wanna fuck Sebastian and they hate seeing his character being hc otherwise. Like, really taking it to an extreme.

Oh definitely. I know a lot of people use her (and Sam and Steve) as a self-insert.

Also, I’m a say this, but I’m not gonna name them. There was one particular SarahBucky blog that was so outrageous — they would bully other SarahBucky bloggers and they’d post moodboards where Sarah was represented by White women or ethnically ambiguous women — and then if you said anything about it, they’d try to attack you. They went after my friend simply because she said something about people refusing to acknowledge that Sarah is dark skinned in their moodboards. So, like I said on my other post, I do understand why some people didn’t want to deal with that BS.

ok so in terms of like canon stuff i feel like riley and sam had the closest thing u could to a meet cute in the literal army and i see their relationship as like very similar to daveklaus??? i think it definitely like in precatws i see them as meeting on base, maybe even not knowing each other before they got assigned to the project and got their wings etc

there’s a lot of potential for a slow burn there even as just a platonic relationship and tbh given the popularity of media like 1917, dunkirk, top gun, and that rn (which….. the modern stuff is more HMMMM but i mean the interest is there???) n marvels propaganda deal with the us military i don’t know WHY they HAVENT greenlit some sort of d+ mini series giving us a samriley prequel ??? at least a short 😭 but idk maybe they’ll actually give us some sams past crumbs in cap 4?????

in aus though i like to hc riley and sam as having the same hometown, i love the idea of riley being a quintessential southern boy with the drawl and the slang, i also heavily borrow from just say you do’s version of riley in which he has a dry sense of humor and takes no shit just like sam!! i picture him as “sassy” and over the top in the same way as like JVN lol

also i think he and sam have the best fashion sense out of anyone in the group except maybe nat when she’s not dressing super comfy casual (we all know steve and bucky are dead last on that one LMAOOO) bc riley comes from a working class family/started working himself at a really young age and so now he likes to be super deliberate about his sense of style/presentation instead of just whatever he got handed down from neighbors or church donations etc and that was a HUGE part of accepting his sexuality + gender identity (he/they riley u will always be famous)

i also borrow some elements of like adam parrish’s backstory 🤡 in that i see riley’s parents as negligent at best and ab*sive at worst, making the wilsons his sort of pseudo-family/safe space even before he and sam get together whether that’s bc they’re childhood besties in aus or bc they accept sam’s closest comrade into their fold (i cant remember if sam lost his parents before he went into the service so don’t come for me anyone) but yeah like in non canon universes i see their story as highly similar to stevebuckys bc they’re foils duh except ig riley would be closer to comics bucky than mcu bucky w his parents

it’s weird bc i used to exclusively ship stevebucky and then samriley completely separate. since i became open to the idea of multi shipping, i now ship in a different order/way??

like for au’s i still follow the two distinctive ships, meaning if i’m writing stevebucky i’ll usually have established samriley or single sam. however if i’m writing sambucky it’s probably going to be past!samsteve and/or stevebucky as well if not just samstevebucky (the most superior of all ships) 😌 like i might mention riley being sam’s ex before he got together with steve (if i’m including him and steve as a couple and not just friends) or just gets w bucky but the focus is way less on riley’s impact on sam’s dating history than like steve if that makes sense which is just interesting to me?? it’s also a roulette wheel of whether or not i decide to throw in sammisty (my beloved) bc sometimes i like to write bi sam and other times i like to write gay sam

sidenote i see peggy and steve and nat absolutely bi, always, angie as 100% a lesbian, misty and sam as bi4bi, but for sam and bucky i could see them as either bi or gay (although i typically tend to write bucky as either just gay or at most bi-curious but always in relationships with mlm)

i feel like i write more samriley in complete au’s than in canon compliant fics which is odd haha

maybe bc in canon compliant fics, if samriley exists i see them as a monogamous partnership, but if sam is with someone else/poly i typically see it like riley d*ed bc personally i just don’t see them breaking up?? they’re like either that couple u know that’s been together since they were 14 and you never see them without each other OR they’re exactly the same but they actually got married in their early 20s. i say, having explicitly written their divorce before

also idk why but i feel like in my head w poly!sam steve and/or bucky (or misty) are cool w him having paramours and metamours and everything even if they aren’t poly themselves but riley is strictly a one man guy and has no interest in anything outside a monogamous mlm relationship. he’s also demi and a hopeless romantic!

when i write samriley + steve and bucky i see riley as being able to relate to bucky better bc i follow the general fandom hc that riley is also disabled, but he’s somewhat closer w steve bc of sam and bucky’s initial “feud” when riley was still distrustful of bucky and 100% in sam’s corner, meaning he and bucky have a similar dynamic to sam and bucky where they like to banter and antagonize one another but he and steve are more chill and friendly when they talk like he and sam are (although they aren’t above ribbing at each other and referencing embarrassing inside jokes)

hngngngngnh h OH also he and sarah are like best friends bc they LOVE to gang up on sam and 100% would die for sam but like given the choice they would unionize to embarrass him at the drop of a hat

Headcanon of the day: sambucky as parents.

Raising their first kid is kind of tough, like tough enough they have to call Sarah for help. They're about to die from frustration and tiredness when she walks in, shinning like a miracle and showing they can handle a baby just fine.

“You guys fought Thanos and his alien army, but y'all can't take care of this tiny thing??”

It's embarrassing, but soon they get the handle of things like the cool dads that they are and not so late, they adopt more kids.

Sam enjoys every second of everyday with his cute little family and hates leaving them to go work. He makes sure to come back home from every mission, every dangerous trip around the world, 'cause nobody is taking him from his family.

Duel to the missions Sam has to attend, Bucky fully comitts with becoming a house dad and absolutely nails it. It's actually a dream come true staying at home, taking care of the kids and waiting for Sam to get back from work and greet him with sweet kisses.

They'll take the kids in many adventures. Field trips, sleepovers, rides on the boat, building treehouses, camping. Everything they can think of.

Post its with notes about important dates, groceries to make, sleeping time, school schedule and many other things will be everywhere.

They're both paranoid on the exact same level, both overprotective as hell, trying to predict every step the kids will take.

People think that because of the metal arm and the whole used-to-be-the-winter-soldier thing, Bucky is the threatening, terrifying and serious dad. He's actually the cute, shy and very clumsy dad. Just don't do anything with his husband or kids if you wanna live lol

Sam is the serious and terrifying dad. If you give him one reason to suspect about you...[jaws theme song starts playing]. The minute you turn around he's got his eyes on you, watching from afar with a stern expression, protectively holding his children.

Sam let the kids play with the shield, takes them flying to especific places just to show off and see them happy. He teaches them how to use redwing, how to fix and create techy stuff.

Bucky goes around speaking other languages with the kids all the time, even if they don't understand. Later at night, he'll sing lullabies in romanian and tell them stories about old times.

Both of their camera rolls are filled with pics and videos of their children and each other doing the cutest and funniest stuff everywhere they go.

Did Sam find Bucky between TWS and CW? Yes, but only once. They didn't even speak that much. It became obvious pretty quickly to Sam that Bucky was avoiding any confrontation, because it was easier to cope with, and also because he wasn't so naive to think that he could just "come home", whatever that means. He likes Sam instantly, but not overwhelmingly. Sam is less impressed, but he's sympathetic. He feels like absolute shit for not telling Steve and throws himself into the Avengers stuff to distract himself.

Civil War - they spend like a day and a half in a car together. They get on surprisingly well, jumping straight to banter, certainly less awkwardly than Bucky and Steve do. I don't think Sam (or anyone, sorry) visits Bucky in Wakanda before Infinity War. HC wise, in the days after Endgame, Sam and Bucky spend a lot of time together and that's when it really starts. Unfortuntely, it doesn't really get off the ground. Sam hasn't seen his family in seven years (two on the run, five in the blip); he needs to go home, so they separate. This is where Bucky's entitlement to Sam's time and personal space in TFATWS comes from, and their mutual concern for each other.

Sam is bi, but he doesn't really talk about it much. Partly because he's a private person but partly because he's guarded and doesn't want to show vulnerability. Bucky is also bi but is still 1930s about it - like, it's not the same vocabulary, it's not the same concepts, but he's still chill about it, if a bit stunted. It takes them a while to go public with it, and when they do it's a gradual process, not a big bombastic coming out. Nobody is remotely surprised either way.

Bucky can carry Sam around like he weighs next to nothing. Sam absolutely loves this but feels obliged to act outraged about it

Being Captain America isn't a real job. There's a lot of waiting around for some crisis to emerge, for something to help with. Sam has a knack for finding things to keep busy with, even when he should probably just be resting. Bucky keeps himself busy by looking after Sam.

hc that when sam and bucky first start living together as a couple, it's in a raggedy apartment in new orleans that they make their own

their apartment was small, but full of the both of them. from their inherited sailboat shower curtain that seemingly always smelled of salt water, to their god awful shaggy rug that bucky thought would look nicely in their living room. on the side table a few feet from the door, a bowl sarah had gifted them that hold their keys, and a picture of sam and bucky on the docks that cass had taken on sarah's phone. their table cloth was the one bucky used to take sam on a picnic date. their large collection of wine was purely sam, no excuse for it. it was homey, full of life. and it was theirs.

in that apartment is where bucky first realized that they had a home. that they had a place to call their own and people they loved and others they cherished. that, for the first time on their own terms, they were truly free.

in that apartment is where sam put his past behind him. where he tucked riley and his parents and karli and everyone he has lost into his heart and moved on. where he saw his future. where he saw his bucky. and he couldn't be happier.

when they eventually decide to move out, get a bigger place, they give their thanks. they thank the off-white wallpaper of their first home for the memories and the chances it gave them. it was a teary goodbye, but a necessary one. and when they drive down lucason street, they always stop to admire the greasy looking building that gave them a second chance at living.
