Today In History Sammy Davis, Jr., legendary entertainer, received the 53rd NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date March 30, 1969 for: his multifaceted talent, his participation in the civil rights movement, and for his dedication to freedom, justice, quality, and the brotherhood of all mankind. He overcame prevailing racism to establish himself as an entertainment legend, becoming a successful comedian, actor, dancer and singer. As part of the Rat Pack, with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. was known for films like Ocean's 11 and Sergeants 3. As his fame grew, his refusal to appear in any clubs that practiced racial segregation led to the integration of several venues in Miami Beach and Las Vegas. A Tony-nominated performer, Davis was also associated with popular recordings like "I've Gotta Be Me" and the No. 1 hit "The Candy Man." “Everyone there had at one time or another been into Satanism, or, like myself, had dabbled around the edges for sexual kicks” Sammy Davis Jr, 1980, referring to the victims of the Manson Family murders Sammy’s sublime ‘Yes, I Can” catchphrase was a pledge that genuinely meant something. It represented Davis’ refusal to recognize barriers, be they Jim Crow policies, societal norms, or even Satan worship. From clichéd descents into drug addiction to rebellious embraces of Republican politicians, Davis took everything to an obsessive extreme Sammy’s relationship with Satan began during a 1968 visit to the Factory, an LA nightclub he partially owned. He was invited to the party by a group of young actors sporting red fingernails, signifying their allegiance to the Church of Satan. Founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey, the San Francisco-based ministry combined LaVey’s interests in ancient paganism, a media-savvy flair for publicity, and a philosophy of indulgence When Sammy arrived at the party (whose theme he summarized as “dungeons and dragons and debauchery”), all attendees were wearing hoods or masks. The centerpiece of the “coven” was a naked woman chained spread-eagle on a red-velvet-covered alter. Davis was confident though that human sacrifice was not on the menu that evening. “That chick was happy,” he later wrote Not all the Satanists at that orgy would be so lucky. As Sammy was getting stoned and serviced, one of the ritual’s leaders tilted back his hood, revealing himself as Jay Sebring, the famed celebrity hairdresser. Sebring was Hollywood’s all-time greatest hetero hairstylist, a member of the Laurel Canyon elite responsible for Jim Morrison’s hairdo, he also helped get Bruce Lee on TV, and most interestingly was at one point engaged to actress Sharon Tate During the Manson Family’s infamous 1969 massacre, Sebring would be bound to Tate, shot, then stabbed seven times. The bio on the website for Sebring International (his still-active haircare company) fails to mention his Satanism, though until recently the company’s logo was an ankh, a symbol frequently used by occultists #tsptr #sammydavisjr #counterculture #churchofsatan #manson https://www.instagram.com/p/ClgwKLQs1HJHDZwekxoRP6UMhykwW3Q_JVtdRQ0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

OMG, where has George Schlatter been my whole life? I could've been a contenda!
George Schlatter relishes the accidents and has made a career and created a legacy spinning them into comedy gold. Sock it to me! Here comes the judge! Look that up in your Funk and Wagnells! It’s not everyone who creates language that becomes part of the lexicon. 25x Emmy Nominee, 3x Emmy Winner, Golden Globe WInner, Producers Guild Winner, and Directore’s Guild Man of the Year, George Schlatter is all that and so much more. A television icon, I’m beyond thrilled to have had this opportunity to chat and get to know him with y’all.
Creator and producer of Laugh-In, for that alone he should be canonized, George changed the face of television. He also created and produced Real People, produced the first 5 years of the Grammy Awards plus series and specials starring Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Eddie Murphy, Cher, Elton John, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Liza Minnelli, Michael Jackson, Doris Day, Jonathan Winters, Richard Pryor, Shirley MacLaine, Bill Cosby, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Diana Ross, Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, Nat King Cole, Placido Domingo and scores of others. George Schlatter created and for 15 years produced the American Comedy Awards.
Most recently, George produced a comedy collection for Sirius Radio and Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate for Netflix.
Besides his work in television, George has been honored for his showmanship and involvement in many charitable causes. To further his support of comedy and the people who perform it, George has become an active supporter and Board Member of the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York. He's donated much of his material to them and they've named their theater, The George and Jolene Brand Schlatter Theater, in his honor.
George’s book, Still Laughing: A Life in Comedy, which dropped in July, is a feast for show biz and comedy lovers. I devoured it. And he shares so many gems from it with us here, from the creation of Laugh-In, finding Goldie, Lily, Artie, Judy, Henry, Ruth, Dan, and Dick, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Robin Williams, Lucy, Steve Lawrence, Judy Garland, Cher, Diana Ross, more, more,  more!
We had a near-miss encounter 37 years ago when he was producing Comedy Club and I was visiting my Laughter Company Improv cohort, Bob Nelson. I didn't let him get away from me this time! Where has George Schlatter been my whole life? No matter, he's here now. And that's no accident!

WAY BACK TO THE SUPER-SEVENTIES -- WHISKY WEDNESDAY EDITION.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a Sammy Davis Jr. (1925-1990) print ad for Suntory White [Japanese] Whisky, c. mid '70s, c. 1973/'74.
"The Suntory White Label whisky was the first single malt whisky made in Japan. It was launched in 1929 and got the nickname Shirofuda, which came from the white label on the bottle. After World War II, it was called White.
Suntory was one of the first Asian companies to use Western celebrities to market their product. One of the most notable is Sammy Davis, Jr., who appeared in a series of memorable Suntory commercials in the early to mid 1970s."

“Sometime in the late 40’s, before either man was famous, Frank Sinatra appeared in a theater in New York. After his show he went to Harlem to see the Will Maston Trio led by a young Sammy Davis Jr. Frank was blown away by Sammy’s talent and after the show he asked Sammy to come see his show.
A week goes by. No Sammy. Sinatra went back to Harlem to see the Will Maston Trio again and asked. Sammy why he didn’t show. Sammy said he was there but they wouldn’t let him in. Frank stormed back to the theater, tore up his contract in front of them, and never performed there again. That would be a common theme during the course of their friendship and careers. When Sammy wasn’t allowed to play at the Copacabana, Frank wouldn’t play there either.
When Sammy was refused a Las Vegas hotel room, Frank said, “Give him my room!” After Sammy’s car accident where he lost his eye, it was Sinatra who paid all his medical bills. After 5 decades and 40 years of performing together, a reporter once asked Frank why he was always so charitable to Sammy. Frank responded in three words, “He’s my brother.””

Today in Pop Culture History: Nov 19, 1954 While driving from Vegas to Los Angeles, #SammyDavisJr. crashes into another car on Route 66 in San Bernardino, California, and three days later, permanently loses use of his left eye. While in the hospital, friend Eddie Cantor tells Davis about the twin struggles of the Jewish and African-Americans, leading Davis to convert to Judaism. (The accident, paradoxically, increased his popularity.)
