This whole fic is so sweet, and I adore all the stops they make along the way, the progression feels so natural. So yeah, it's fantastic, and I highly recommend it!

Reasons why I love it: Steve being an experienced gay icon, we stan. I love the Steve Rogers is Not A Virgin trope, and this fic does it incredibly well. I also really enjoyed the hopeful note that this fic ends on. It's fantastic, and I hope you go and check it out for yourself!

Therefore, any fic recs where Sam is not so nice and welcoming but someone still falls in love with him (could be Bucky or Steve)? Not like cruel or abusive, I just want him to be selfish, jealous, not so understanding, not a lover of peace, standoffish but not unpleasant to be around. Remember last year when I was like: I’m gonna recommend fics because all the rec lists either recommend the same 5 authors or don’t care if the story respects Sam, and then I recommended a handful of stories, then kinda forgot about it lol? Anyways, I’m back with another fic rec!

I am so picky about ot3 fics because they can go really wrong really quickly, but not this one. This was amazing @the-lunar-pull. This story is truly Sam centric, and the writing was beautiful. Seriously, this fic was so good and I promise you, if you read it, you will not be disappointed. Please do yourself a favor and go read it.

(Well, my most recent bookmarks are the ones you just recomended to me but skipping those...)

Here's the thing: this one is tricky because while I've been trying to keep multiple interests on my dash, when it comes to my fic reading I've been fixated on the Locked Tomb books to an alarming degree and before that I spent a couple of years away from fandom.

This means that all my recent bookmarks are either Locked Tomb fics or, like, writing advice for my wip. To find something else we'd have to go back to 2017 which I don't think counts as "recent" by any definition of the word.

But fortunately, right at the top of my bookmarks I've got something that can be read fandom-blind!

Mors Vincit Omnia

Working security at an architectural firm isn't the thrilling career Gideon had seen for herself, but it pays the bills. When a series of gruesome murders take place, she finds herself dragged into the path of her childhood tormentor, now a well-respected forensic anthropologist. Together they get pulled under by the current of desecration and accusation, fighting for truth as unlikely allies.

The great thing about this one is that it functions as a mystery/thriller featuring some artistically nasty corpse descriptions and an enemies-to-lovers romance. It's a modern AU and enough of the backstory is baked in that you won't need to consult a fan wiki. The legal and scientific aspects are a bit hand-wavey, but the plot is tight, the characterizations are great and the story, dare I say it, has great bones.

Unfortunately, it's a WIP and right in the middle of a cliffhanger but it updates regularly, so there should be a new chapter soon.

How to describe this in a way that does it justice? It's heartwarming. It's hilarious. Sam offers to help Steve navigate 21st century romance with a series of "practice dates". Sam thinks that Steve isn't picking up on his attempts to flirt; in fact, Sam is missing all of Steve's many, many attempts to flirt and/or pick Sam up.

Although the author mentions a planned 14th chapter that never happened, the story is functionally complete with no cliffhanger and nothing important is missing.

How did you get into sambucky? I've seen so much stuff for it but Im worried. I really liked samsteve, but that was more..balanced? Sam was treated better. I just feel like sam has been used as bucky's therapist since 2014, and Ive seen fics that are just more of that but worse. Or they're just an excuse for bucky to shit on/move on from steve, with sam as a fill-in.

Have you been able to find good fics/authors? The actual sam-centric tag doesn't seem to work out too well, people dont tag right.

Hey, anon! SamSteve did seem more balanced on one hand, on the other hand I did run into instances where it felt like people were using Sam as a placeholder for Bucky. I think because the SamSteve fandom is relatively smaller though, its less overwhelming or something. Like for a minute on SamBucky ao3 every other fic was an offensive hot mess, but SamSteve doesn’t seem that way. I do enjoy a good ol’ SamSteve fic lol.

Listen, I kinda lucked out as far as finding the good side of the SamBucky fandom. I read some fanfic on ao3 and lurked around here for a good long while before I “actively” joined the fandom, and I joined at a good time — pre-TFATWS — before we had a lot of Stucky transplants. There was still some wild stuff, but it wasn’t as bad as it got in the spring of last year.

Anywho, ngl I give a lot of fics a try, because you never know when you’re going to uncover something great, but I only trust a fraction of the authors out there. I can give you some recs of people who have good SamBucky fics that don’t disrespect Sam:
