Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him.
Caught in between, is John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), an English sailor who finds himself marooned on the land of the rising sun. And how his fateful encounter with Lord Toranaga and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) would change his destiny.

While the characters are fictional, they are based on actual historical characters. Take for example, the three main leads:
Yoshi Toranaga is inspired by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
John Blackthorne is inspired by William Adams.
Toda Mariko is inspired by Hosokawa Gracia.
I enjoyed the 1980s film of the same name which is based on the same book and would very much look forward to watch this.
A tumultuous time where a rising Shogun attempts to unify Japan while Europe is at war between Catholics and Protestants.
Kurosawa was a person who wouldn't take a no for an answer, who would work to get something right, who would get up and dust himself off and give a difficult problem another go. 'You can fall down seven times in the same place,' Kurosawa said, quoting an ancient Japanese proverb, 'and if you stand up the eighth time you have won.'
The Sword of Doom's original motion picture soundtrack is available on vinyl for the first time via Waxwork Records. The score is composed by Masaru Sato (Yojimbo, Godzilla Raids Again, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla).
Priced at $30, the album is pressed on 180-gram "Snow, Blood, Flames, and Katana" swirled color vinyl. It's housed in a gatefold jacket with matte satin coating featuring art by Yuko Shimizu and a 12x12 print.

Convencionalmente os filmes pautados sobre o Shinsengumi tem como protagonista os principais membros deste grupo. Neste caso, procurou destacar membros, como Kanichiro Yoshimura e Hajime Saito. O segundo é um dos poucos sobreviventes deste grupo, e o filme se molda em flashbacks do Saito e de outros personagens com envolvimento com o Yoshimura.
O filme desfruta de um sentimento nostálgico dos personagens, toda uma aura do filme dispõe desta nostalgia. O que pode florear muito da visão que passa sobre a Shinsengumi. Dependendo do jidaigeki, a Shinsengumi é transposta como grandes vilões na História Japonesa, mas aqui, vejo uma atenuação ao contar sobre o grupo. Tem seus momentos de massacre, mas se foca mais a lidar sobre o sentimento do homem com o caminho do samurai.
Se você espera que o foco seja a ação, talvez não seja esse filme, o foco maior é mesmo o drama. A relação da família, o amor, de como lidar com o novo Japão que está por vir, de homens que não estão preparados para esta mudança, e tendo sempre dúvidas de como lidar com o ocidente.
Os dois personagens principais têm um show de atuação, mas o Kiichi Nakai, no papel do Yoshimura, é o grande destaque deste filme. Consegue transparecer a dicotomia de seu personagem, que muda dependendo da visão de cada personagem que estão tendo as memórias exploradas. Um homem que vive por sua família, tendo atitudes não dignas de um samurai, como a ganância por dinheiro, mas de todos, é o que mais segue o código do Bushido. Ao mesmo tempo que é um homem gentil, com um ar melancólico.
