What’s crazy is that for all the decades that LOTR has been out, and for all the years it’s been so famous and relevant, it wasn’t common knowledge how it ends? Idk like I knew Frodo and Sam make it back to the Shire. I thought that was it. I thought they got their simple happy ever after. But I DIDN’T know that Frodo leaves for the Grey Havens!!!! LIKE I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT ! HOW WAS I NOT AWARE OF THAT!!!!! Maybe it was just me but like I’m glad I didn’t know because my reading experience was so fun and I would never want to miss out on that heartbreak of the real bittersweet ending.

lots and lots of thoughts about singing in Tolkien but one of the most important ones is, I love that Gollum sings
his song about catching a fish is not a complicated song, the lines are very short, the rhymes are simple, but in a world that was created BY singing, the ability to do so seems inherently linked to humanity, to soul, and to goodness. even when it seems so far unlike singing of elves (Galadriel almost sings in prose sometimes, as if everything she says could be made into a song; to elves the line between speech and song seems blurred) or men and dwarves and hobbits (although there is also much to be said about the hobbits' songs being quite simple - except for Bilbo's, but he's an outsider, he hangs out with dwarves and elves and is considered "cracked" by others. then Frodo follows right in his footsteps)
ironically, Gollum's song feels closest to Sam's song about a troll, even if they would both hate that So Much

ULTIMATE TOLKIEN BLORBO: FINAL ROUND
“Still, I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. We're in one, of course, but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: "Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring!" And they will say: "Yes, that's one of my favourite stories. Frodo was very brave, wasn't he, dad?" "Yes, my boy, the famousest of the hobbits, and that's saying a lot."
'It's saying a lot too much,' said Frodo, and he laughed, a long clear laugh from his heart. Such a sound had not been heard in those places since Sauron came to Middle-earth. To Sam suddenly it seemed as if all the stones were listening and the tall rocks leaning over them. But Frodo did not heed them; he laughed again. 'Why, Sam,' he said, 'to hear you somehow makes me as merry as if the story was already written. But you've left out one of the chief characters: Samwise the stouthearted. "I want to hear more about Sam, dad. Why didn't they put in more of his talk, dad? That's what I like, it makes me laugh. And Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam, would he, dad?"'
'Now, Mr. Frodo,' said Sam, 'you shouldn't make fun. I was serious.'
'So was I,' said Frodo, 'and so I am.”

I know the hobbits are little but the HOBBITS are LITTLE. just like you. just like me. little in the face of very big problems. little meaning easily squashed and often overlooked. little like one lit match in the vast night. sometimes little people are the only thing left fighting. sometimes the little match is what lights the bonfire. hope never dies

TOLKIEN WEEK 2022 (2/2) | day 4: favorite relationship ↳ frodo baggins and samwise gamgee
Then as quickly as he could he cut away the binding cords and laid his head upon Frodo's breast and to his mouth, but no stir of life could he find, nor feel the faintest flutter of the heart. Often he chafed his master's hands and feet, and touched his brow, but all were cold. 'Frodo, Mr. Frodo!' he called. 'Don't leave me here alone! It's your Sam calling. Don't go where I can't follow! Wake up, Mr. Frodo! O wake up, Frodo, me dear, me dear. Wake up!'
