Donate Now to Bring Back the Bay Lights
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
UPDATE: $6m pledged. Four more $1m pledges and the project is a go! Crowdfunding of 11th million continues here. Widely considered one of the world’s great public art projects, The Bay Lights’ current system of LEDs is failing at a rate faster than can be repaired. They must be replaced with a new system that is custom engineered to perform in the harsh environmental conditions of San Francisco Bay. On March 5th, on the 10th anniversary of its initial Grand Lighting, the artwork will go dark.
In total, $11M is needed for their return. We are raising ten $1M gifts from major philanthropists. This crowdfunding campaign seeks to raise $1M in smaller gifts, allowing everyone to participate.
The good news: with your help, The Bay Lights by artist Leo Villareal will return more magically than ever. The number of programmable LEDs will double to nearly 50,000, making the artwork visible to communities around the Bay. And for the first time, we seek to have the lights be safely visible to drivers on the Bay Bridge, creating a world-class nighttime public art portal into San Francisco.
The San Francisco-based art nonprofit Illuminate is leading this effort. Please join us in helping return this public art masterpiece. Your gift of any size will help. We will do this collectively, one dollar, one hundred dollars, or $1M at a time.
All gifts made to The Bay Lights 360 campaign are restricted and will be used only to cover Bay Lights-related expenses.

Descriptions of SF in Fanfic: Notes on Climate
Ok. This has gone on long enough. I am not going to screenshot the snippet that broke me because I have too much damn respect for fanfic authors and this fanfic is beautifully written. HOWEVER. If I read one more description of San Francisco being "soaked in sun" with "brilliant blue ocean" and "sandy beaches" I am going to lose my mind.
Please, I am begging you fanfic authors, look at this plot:
Tumblr media
Those are min and max lines. During the warmest months of the year, you can expect SF to have a max temperature of 77F/25C. That's not average of 77F/25C. MAX. When I was there last August, I think the average day was around 55F/13C.
Here is what SF looks like on your average day:

The fog is, surprisingly to new visitors, worst in the summer. So summers are foggy and damp, winters are wet and damp.
It's not like it's never sunny. Often the fog burns off in the afternoon and you get nice days in the spring and fall. You also often see people out on Baker/China/Ocean Beach regardless of the weather:

But be advised: that water is fucking cold. See how almost no one is swimming? That's because that water is directly open to the Northern Pacific. People generally wear wet suits. Surfing is a thing, but it's like Irish surfing. You wet suit up and you brace yourself.
I get that people are just going to write whatever they think a place is like most of the time. That's fine. I'm not expecting people to get the details of the insane BART/Muni system correct or reference exact street names or anything. But I am begging, on my hands and knees, for fanfic authors to stop assuming that SF is like LA. I have seen this so many times and it rips my heart out every time. Nothing worse for a San Franciscan than to see this insipid comparison to LA constantly.
Side note to those writing Trek fic:
Tumblr media
The Presidio is where Roddenberry plopped Starfleet HQ and it's pretty much smack in the middle of a coastal rainforest. It is very green, has loads of trees, and it's wet. All the time. It's also on the ocean facing side of the city, so it gets the brunt of the cold and wind. The more you know!

Last month I taught my first class at ARCH Art Supplies and it was great! I didn't finish my demo painting in class, so I finished it later. Here it is!
If you want to find out when the next class is, you can sign up for my newsletter or keep an eye out here or on Instagram.
