Today we’re at the @oldtowncosmo in @oldtownsandiego continuing Staycation 2021 to help support local businesses impacted by the lockdowns. The Cosmopolitan Hotel stands on the grounds where Juan Bandini’s mansion once stood in the 1830’s. It was a place reknowned for lavish soirées and celebration. When The United States took control over California in the 1840s, many of the original Californios struggled financially as the economy shifted from one based in ranching and cattle to a more merchant driven model. Juan Bandini was eventually forced to surrender his estate in 1859 to pay off debts. He died shortly thereafter. Fortunately, in 1869, Albert Seeley, a stagecoach operator, purchased the property. He added a second story and expanded the downstairs parlor to create a stagecoach stop, where weary travelers could rest and dine. He promised the Bandini children that they would always have a room available with him. “Visions Through Time” (available at www.thelucidnap.com- click the link in my bio) This piece was inspired by the now defunct Sky Room cocktail lounge in the El Cortez Hotel (now an apartment complex) in Downtown San Diego. The hotel was a thriving hot spot, but as so many old buildings do, fell into disrepair. Thankfully today, it’s been lovingly renovated and refurbished into luxury condominiums! Old Town San Diego’s El Campo cemetery, established in 1849 is now a historic site. It serves as the final resting place for many figures of early San Diego lore. . . . Paved streets and sidewalks now cover some of the original plots, which are marked by small metal discs labeled “gravesite”. People tell stories about parking near these markers and returning to find their car battery dead. . . . The grand staircase of @hortongrandhotel located in the @saltwhiskeysd was preserved for the most part from the original hotel. During reconstruction at the Horton Grand’s current location, the staircase was moved on site, only to discover that several pieces were either missing or had not survived their stay in the warehouse. Our suite at The @hortongrandhotel came with a fire place! The hotel is part of San Diego’s heritage. The building as it stands now was originally two buildings, the Horton Grand Hotel and The Brooklyn Kahle Saddlery. The buildings were scheduled for demolition in the 70’s to make way for a shopping mall, the now defunct Horton Plaza. Happily, The Hotel and Saddlery were instead taken down, one brick at a time, with careful cataloging of all the buildings components. The remnants were stored for reconstruction at a later date. That date came in 1986, when they were resurrected and joined together by an atrium at the entrance. Some people like to say this hotel is haunted, but those would have to be some pretty patient ghosts! More pre-podcast rituals! I’ve driven by An’s Dry Cleaning @ansdrycleaning a handful of times but never have I been in till today. It used to be a dryclaner, but is now a gelato shop with some very unique flavors! It kept the theme of a dry cleaning business to preserve the character of the neighborhood!
