I genuinely think that by some paradox DC was WAY more inclusive and "woke" in the '90 than now. Like so many POC characters, the firsts queer relationship in comics, many more disabled characters and representation than today. Not all of them were written well, mind you, but at least they were doing something instead of just showing up during Pride moth and then disappearing in limbo forever after a couple of cheesy lines. And we are not talking enough of all the disabilities erasure in the last years.

Everyone always talks about how Eobard Thawne is one of the funniest antagonists in the DCU, but I think we should talk more about Lady Shiva because her life goal is literally "maybe I'll fuck around and everyone else will find out."

She trains heroes for the bit so she can beat them up later. She saved Vic Sage's life only to say she'd kill him if he refused to defend himself and never once dropped her fan while she beat his ass. When Cass meets her, she's eating at a 5-star restaurant and planning to murder a woman for paying for bodyguards instead of defending herself. She calls Tim "little bird" and tells him in advance that she's planning to come kill him. Sometimes she just randomly shows up specifically so she can fuck with Dinah and then leave. Peak humor.

She's so incredibly bored all the time. All she wants is a challenge. So in lieu of that, she just makes it her mission in life to fuck with everyone for fun. No loyalties, no massive personal beef with anyone (still living). Just vibes. What a woman.

I was thinking about Jason's search for his mother, how it started. Jason didn't just go looking for random women based on the limited information that is his birthday, probably hospital, and that his mother's name starts with an 'S'. He found his father's address book which has the names with three women all starting with an 'S'.

Among these is fucking Lady Shiva.

Which makes me wonder how a random Two Face "thug" like Willis Todd has at the very least, the name of a woman of her caliber in his address book. I'd say it's a "work" thing but as far as I know, Shiva and Dent never teamed up.

How did they meet? How did they get on friendly enough terms that Shiva possibly shared an address with him. (Real or fake would be aside the point because why would she share it at all unless she wanted to at least appear like she's on friendly terms.) Was Willis, pre New 52, a total chad?? Did they just work together at some point before Dent? If so what kind of jobs was Willis even doing that Shiva deemed him useful.

So many questions.

I don't know about DC's Dragon ladies being more complex in the 90s. That's when Shiva got on that "corrupt white heroes" kick starting with Chuck Dixon and when Jade nuked Qurac.

Sorry, my bad, I meant the 90s as in older comics, I chose that period because it's the middle ground for me in comics before the Great Edginess that came in the early 2000s. And yes, I still think that while very badly written, they were way more complex. Like I felt they at least were doing their own thing, instead now they ( Talia, Shiva, Shado, Chesh ect) are like the same character in different font. Most of the time in the modern comics they are just the ex/baby mama to go to when in needing of something "morally grey". And like they took their motivation, ideals and backstories and thrown them together. Shiva absolutely didn't want to be a mother and was way more on the side of good in her firts appearances, yet now she always loved Cass and lived in Asia, even if she was from Detroit (let's not talk about the whole David thing and how people treat it as consensual) , Talia who was in medical school and wasn't raised as an assasin is now the world deadliest woman. Shado, Who wanted to be a mother and raise her child in private, I think she was retired, basically turned into a Jade2.0.

Actually I think they all basically became Jade. Like the backstory was hers before. The struggle between her morals, wanting to live with her child but also being a danger, being raised as a weapon, all that was hers, but in modern comics all seems copypaste for these ladies. I think it is starting to get to Rose Wilson too. Like in a few years you will read how Lilith trained her to climb mountains since she was three.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I love my ladies so much, even with their messed up stories, and the modern narrative of "let's ignore everything this character has gone through in the past because I need them as a prop for one of the batboys" is really pissing me off.
