These Witches Don't Burn duology by Isabel Sterling

one of my favourite YA reads in recent years!

Elemental witches! The magic is somewhere between Winx Club/W.I.T.C.H (sans the magical girl transformations) and Avatar, and it’s just so familiar and fun.

The narrator authentically sounds like a teenager, but remains engaging to any reader.

Diverse ensemble cast with very detailed characters.

Ballet aesthetic with some of the main characters—this really brought back my childhood. It was so vividly written and beautiful.

City/forest ambience is really well-done.

MURRRDERRR!!! Which came as a complete shock.

Things turn into a very dark and intense mystery/thriller/adventure with angsty betrayals.

And yet it still manages to remain so wholesome and warm.

The second-chance romance and other relationships are very sweet.

The sequel is as good as the first book and the ending is really satisfying!

I recieved a free ARC at an author event a few years ago, and I really wasn't expecting much from the duology. You can imagine my surprise when I finally picked it up. The audiobook is very fun, and the plot includes everything I want in a YA read—fantasy, romance, friendships, aesthetics, even murder and adventure. Truly one of my favourite series ever probably. I've seen some pictures of copies floating around so I just want to throw in my enthusiastic two cents—Highly, highly recommended!

Anniversary Sale

Two year ago in September, my first novella went up for sale!! Little Lights was my first foray into publishing and an absolute joy to bring together (minus all the nervous nail-biting and late-night calls to my poor friends). A dark academia sapphic story with a touch of Carmilla and vampires? I am all in. Saint Perpetua's College is an isolated and old college deep in the hills of Massachusetts and in this school there is a prestigious poetry program lead by a famous writer. Laura Sheridan is a new student who has just been accepted into the poetry program at Saint Perpetua and there she meets the stunning and mysterious Carmilla, a talented poet who has a strangely intimate relationship with their professor, De Lafontaine. Laura and Carmilla become academic rivals yet there is an obsession that is growing between them... and Laura begins to notice the dark obsession between Carmilla and De Lafontaine. The relationship between Carmilla and De Lafontaine is steeped in secrets, blood, and power dynamics. Laura also begins to find herself equally as obsessed with Carmilla as she's drawn into the strange relationship between her and their professor. De Lafontaine has her own secrets and agenda for the girls, but between the three of them, who what will come of their relationship and the obsessions that grow between them. This was a really fun dark academia sapphic story that gave A Lesson in Vengeance vibes (one of my favorite books) and I had a really fun time with this one because I also absolutely adore the Carmilla classic story. This was a fun mix of sapphic relationship, vampires, and dark academia! I would definitely recommend it for fans of the mentioned genres!
