Sometimes I see the way media handles female characters and I'm just like, "Oh my god, that's so cool. I don't even want you to change that. I just want you to notice how cool that is. Why aren't you doing something with this amazing thing you wrote? It's so fucking cool."

When I seize control of the Castlevania franchise in a bloody coup, the first thing I'm doing is giving this woman her due.

So. Like. The plot of Castlevania is that the Belmont clan is a long family bloodline of vampire hunters who slay a variety of monsters and routinely kill Dracula every time he shows up. The key to their success is the powerful weapon Vampire Killer, an ultra-sanctified super-weapon that cuts the undead to ribbons so hard the crucifix gets jealous.

(Actually, no, crucifix is OP in Castlevania if used well, but I digress.)

Point is, Castlevania once went into detail about the origins of the Vampire Killer. And its origin was this woman. Sara Trantoul, a young woman afflicted with vampirism who decided that, instead of becoming a vampire, she was going to do some alchemy shit to transmute her very soul into the holiest goddamn weapon in the history of sacred artifacts that lethally fucks up every vampire it comes into contact with.

This woman is to the Belmont bloodline what Raava is to the Avatar. What Fi is to the Master Sword. The key to their ability to slay monsters and fight Dracula comes from a teenage alchemist's undying, eternal determination to get his ass. (Well, to get the ass of the vampire whose powers he stole but same deal really.)

In the games, she basically stops being a factor after the one that introduced her. She's a footnote in the canon of Castlevania, far less important than the whip.

But. Like. Her soul is literally in the whip. I've always imagined Sara as, like, the spirit guide and mentor figure and advisor and shit to every Belmont. Like when the whip is officially passed down, your first challenge is to take it and commune with Sara for the first time, the way the Avatar communes with their past lives.

And then she's with the Belmont in spirit. She knows everything. Can name all of the various creatures they might fight. Encyclopedic understanding of the lore. Trades barbs with Death, who (along with Dracula) is one of the few creatures that can see her. Friendly banters with Alucard about her latest Belmont.

Even if your parents were slaughtered as a child and it was all they could do to get you to safety and there's nobody to teach you how to be a Belmont, as long as you have The Whip, there's still Sara.

This character has so much potential to be such a cool piece of the narrative puzzle. It's already there. All she needs is presence.

Sara sacrifice herself for Leon in order to complete the Whip of Alchemy.

Lisa sacifice since she believed that her death can save others.

Sypha fought against the cyclop by herself before she was turned into a statue and later helped Trevor in his journey against Dracula.

Julia ran in hidding to save herself from persecution of witch trials.

Annette was prepared to take her own life if she became a vampire.

Maria who fought alongside with Richter when she was just a child.

Shanoa used power of glyphs against Dracula by herself.

Charlotte fought alongside with Joanathan during the events of WWII.

In order to rescue his fiancée Sara, he throws everything away in his quest to destroy the vampire.

Sara Trantoul

18 years old

The beautiful daughter of a merchant. She is Leon's fiancée, but as she was about to get married, she was kidnapped and carried to the castle of a vampire.

Even though she is rich, she is a kind girl who lends a helping hand to everyone.

Mathias Cronqvist

32 years old

Leon's closest friend. A genius tactician in the world of knights, where culture is neglected, even called Cronqvist the Wise. His wife passed away while he was on the battlefield.

Elizabetha Cronqvist

Age unknown

Mathias' beloved wife. She fell ill during Mathias' campaign, and by his glorious return, she was already deceased.

Rinaldo Gandolfi

48 years old

A mysterious alchemist. He holds a deep grudge against Walter because of past events. He supports Leon, who enters the castle alone, giving him a whip and selling him various things such as medicine.

Walter Bernhard

42 years old (presumed)

A vampire who has settled into a remote forest an unknown amount of time ago. His magical powers are immense, and he has the power to plunge the forest under his control into eternal darkness.

Because he's immortal, he has a liking for thrilling games, so he kidnapped Sara and lured Leon to his mysterious castle.

Succubus

She's waiting for Leon inside the mysterious castle. She seems to have some kind of connection with Rinaldo, but it's yet unknown.

Medusa

A terrifying enemy who turns soldiers who invade the castle into stone. Will Leon be added to her collection?

Castlevania is full of fridged women, and Sara is one of, if not the most egregious case of the refrigerated woman. Not only is she used to further Leon’s story by giving him a reason to be angry at things and killing vampires, but she becomes the Vampire Killer whip which is used to further the stories of other male Belmonts after Leon. Any of the stories involving the Vampire Killer are always centered around its male wielder. What’s even worse is that she’s never acknowledged after Lament of Innocence. Hell, Leon is mentioned in the animated series, but you know isn’t? I bet you can guess. Anyways, vote Sara.

i love how richter is the belmont who looks the most like sara trantoul, you know, the fiancee of leon belmont, the first belmont, mathias, dracula's best friend.

sara lived to spite dracula and i love her for it. she was not only the love interest of his bestie that he obviously had a thing for, but she was also capable of doing what he could not, rejecting her fate as a vampire and sacrificing herself for the sake of others.

we love sara trantoul on this blog. and i am sad we do not get to see dracula's reaction to richter.

do you people see my vision. do you understand.

they are not biologically related whatsoever but her soul certainly is bound to that whip hes got there. the games more or less insinuate that while the immortal soul goes to the afterlife (or in this case is bound to a holy tool), some part of it lives on and reincarnates (ie soma cruz my sweet baby boy)

and while the netflix series does not make it clear how exactly the morningstar whip is enchanted, leon most certainly did exist, ergo it is not farfetched to assume sara did as well and her fate was not too dissimilar to what happened to her in lament of innocence.

i really hope they explore this in nocturne at some point i would love to see this properly acknowledged in an official piece of media.
