(Note: This is an extremely old oneshot of mine that I rewrote- enjoy some Kath x Sarah cuteness!)

Sarah wasn’t exactly sure why she was crying over her and Katherine’s wedding pictures, but here she was, bawling her eyes out on her bedroom floor after a long day at work.

She’d been cleaning out the area under the bed, hoping to find a book that she’d lost seemingly forever ago, when her eye caught a box of photographs carefully labeled “April 24th- Wedding” in Katherine’s looping handwriting. Taking a break from her search, Sarah had begun to sort through the pictures, and now she was sobbing and clutching a few of them in her arms.

That day had seemed like an amazing dream, from the moment Sarah woke up to the second she saw Katherine walk down the aisle. She could still remember Katherine’s smile, her beauty almost goddess-like as the white dress she wore swirled around her, ethereal and wonderful. The pictures she held were of the ceremony, and she could see the emotion radiating through the room even through the still expressions in the photo.

Sarah remembered stumbling through her vows, tears of joy- much like the ones she was shedding now- running down her cheeks when Katherine began to speak to her. She had gotten so lucky, been so blessed to have the woman of her dreams by her side, and she felt all the emotions of the day come rushing back to her.

She heard the door open behind her, and a small gasp as Katherine saw her sitting on the ground. “Sarah, are you okay?” She asked quickly, setting down some papers she’d been carrying and kneeling next to Sarah, placing an arm around her shoulders.

“I’m alright,” Sarah choked, almost laughing out of sheer embarrassment when Katherine’s eyes landed on the small print-outs she was holding.

“Are those… our wedding pictures?” Katherine faltered, her expression worried. “Is something wrong with them?”

Sarah nestled into her side. “No, not at all,” she began. “It’s just… that was the best day of my life.”

Katherine sighed in relief and chuckled as she squeezed Sarah close. “Oh, good. I thought something was upsetting you.” She planted a kiss on the brunette’s forehead, smiling. “But just so you know- that was the best day of my life, too.”

“Remember how much David cried?” Sarah added. “God, you would’ve thought he was at my funeral if not for the fact he kept saying ‘I’m so happy for you’, over and over again.”

The two sat close together as they basked in the memory of that wonderful day, their faces both flushed with happiness and love. They remembered out loud countless stories from the wedding, pointing out small details in the photos that sent them both into peals of laughter. It could have been hours or even minutes before they made up their minds to clean up the photos and order some takeout for dinner, but in Sarah’s mind it all went by in a flash. Katherine wrapped Sarah in a hug as they put the photographs back, content to be as close to her wife as she could get.

Later that night, as the two lay curled up in each other’s arms, Sarah planted a light kiss on her wife’s lips, hugging her close. “I love you, Katie,” she whispered. Katherine nestled into her embrace, warm and secure.

“I love you too, Sarah.”

Miss Medda was hosting a Christmas party at the theater. Every single Newsie was there including Katherine, Sarah, Davey and Les. Race had garland draped around himself, laughing at some joke he had just told. Some of the younger newsies laughed along with Race, for some reason they saw him as some sort of role model. Jack would say that he was only a role model in goofing off and getting into mischief.

Jack was sipping some eggnog when Davey walked over towards him. He felt his mouth go dry and his hands began to get warm.

“Enjoying the party?” Davey asked moving to stand closer to Jack so they would be able to talk.

“Ummm…uhhh…yeah..um…yup. Definitely” Jack stuttered trying not to appear too flustered.

Davey raised an eyebrow and Jack’s reply. Surprised that his usual cool manner had faltered suddenly. Deciding to push Jack further, Davey moved to be even closer to him. Jack nervously licked his lips trying to avert his eyes.

“I wasn’t sure if I was actually going to come tonight. But after I heard that you were going to be here I thought I would show up.” Davey said grinning at Jack.

“That’s…um…nice…” Jack trailed off. He knew Davey was loving the position he was in.

Race suddenly popped over.

“Hey look everyone! Jack and Davey are standing under the mistletoe!” Race yelled excitedly.

Jack and Davey’s eyes shot upwards at the same time.

There was indeed mistletoe above them.

“I only really see one choice here” Davey said now only an inch away from Jack.

Jack felt like he was stuck in place.

Davey leaned in and kissed Jack. Surprising himself, Jack reciprocated, placing his hands on Davey’s face.

Race was loudly cheering and the others clapped.

“Worked out that the mistletoe was there” Davey said with a little laugh.

“Even if it wasn’t I still wanted to kiss you, but the mistletoe gave me a good reason to”

Jack smiled and took his hand.

“I’m glad too”

Behind them Katherine nudged Sarah.

“Shall we?” She said slyly.

“I think it will take them all by surprise,” Sarah said.

“Well Jack and Davey have had their spotlight, I want us to have ours tonight” Katherine said.

“Lets steal that light!” Sarah agreed.

Katherine pulled Sarah under the mistletoe. She pulled her in, hands wrapping around Sarah’s waist. Jack and Davey looked shocked as well as the others.

“Oh my God if one more couple kisses tonight I swear to God” Race said staring unabashedly at Katherine and Sarah.

“Wait…it might just be that my brain is broken after Davey kissed me but you are together?” Jack asked.

Sarah and Kathrine were beaming.

“Yes, we are,” Katherine said.

“It’s not that we didn't want to tell you guys, we just wanted to keep it our little secret just to make sure that it would last” Sarah told everyone.

“I knew it was going to last but we both wanted to be careful” Katherine agreed.

Race stole back the attention by pouring the punch over himself and yelling.

“Merry Christmas everyone!”

Laughs were shared and the party got underway once more.

This is a sequel to the Newsies College AU and here is the summary for this story:

It's senior year! David's nervous about taking his art credit, Jack is struggling with his internship, Race and Spot have growing pains while Spot starts grad school, and Specs has decided he's going to say something to Romeo about his crush; all while the threat of real life and graduation looms over them.

This has 12 chapters (11 full chapters and an epilogue) and is around 35K words! Every chapter is up on ao3 so you don't have to wait for the next chapter to be uploaded! Katherine breaks up with Jack two weeks after the events of the musical. She realizes that their relationship was very toxic, so she decides to end that relationship and started going out with Davey.

Jack, although hurt, respects her decision. He then starts going out with Davey’s sister, Sarah (who sadly never made it in the musical, but should have!)

wip wednesday!

today is a filler wip wednesday with a fic that i am most likely never going to write because i have been swamped with irl stuff; anyway, please enjoy me slotting the Newsies characters into a Tangled au for 600+ words.

my gut instinct is to make Davey Rapunzel and Jack Flynn/Eugene

anyway, i'd adjust the Tangled premise a lot, because a lot of Davey's initial character is that he's working for his family. like, he's working to support his parents. He's protective of les in all versions. in 92sies, he jumps into a rigged fight to protect his sister

so Gothel (whoever that will be) took both Davey & Les. Like, they took Davey and came back for Les when Les was born

and yes, this is mostly to further my "protective older siblings" agenda bc i have a thing about older siblings trying their damnedest to save their younger siblings from their own fate

Sarah is stuck at home worrying and wondering if her brothers are even alive

Jack is Eugene/Flynn. the newsies are the Snuggly Duckling crew. the Delancy brothers are the Stabbington bros

Vladimir (ceramic unicorns guy) is Spot

and please don't crucify me for this but Katherine is Maximus (the horse)

like she's obv human but she occupies the role of Maximus in the story

y'know this au makes Esther and Mayer Jacobs into the King & Queen of NYC/Corona and i for one am here for it

and i'm using the 92sies jack outfit bc i love the cowboy hat, so the wanted posters always get his hat wrong and he's always upset about it

ok so ig Gothel would probably be Snyder bc i think that makes the most sense. pulitzer is the captain of the guard above Katherine and he isn't happy about Jack running about and captures him. katherine and the various newsies from Snuggly Duckling break him back out so that he can go save Davey and Les from Snyder.

but at the end of the story he gives up and accepts that Jack isn't going to go away or leave his daughter alone

(my bff Katherine & Jack agenda is showing)

and like. Davey doesn't really want to get out of the tower so much as he wants Les to be happy. and Les wants to leave the tower. so Davey figures out how to get them out of the tower for Les's birthday. When he can't convince Snyder to let them go down for a day, he turns to the man he and Les knocked out and hid in their wardrobe. It's a risk, but Davey is willing to do a lot for Les, because Les will never feel as lonely or forgotten about as Davey has for a lot of his life

i already said this but i have a thing about older siblings trying (and often failing) to protect their younger siblings from their fate like, for example, in canon, Jack tries and fails to protect Crutchie from the Refuge

Les wants so much more than this provincial life wants to explore the world and to see the lights and to touch the grass. but Davey, he doesn't care to leave where he's comfortable. he's content to live with Synder's moods and brush his hair and make his paintings and ensure that Les is safe and cared for and happy

and that's the crux of the matter, isn't it? because les isn't happy in the tower. He needs adventure in the great wide somewhere more space than the two bedrooms and a kitchen that the tower offers them

(don't mind my beauty & the beast references but when making a disney princess au i will reference other disney princesses) and davey, as much as he wants to stay where he's safe, will do anything for Les because otherwise Les will leave on his own and davey won't be able to protect him if he's not there with him

newsies au where Jack accidently rents out his apartment to both Sarah and Spot at the same time, and, lacking anywhere else, the two decide to just live together and pool for rent. So sharing a one bed, one bath is most feared lawyer in Brooklyn Sean Conlon and etsy-shop owner Sarah Jacobs. Needless to say, they do not get along. Sarah hates Spot’s early morning routine and Spot can’t stand Sarah’s fucking dresses and earring and whatever the f*ck else she sells always laid out on the table, and ‘if he touches it, she will slice his gums open with a stich ripper, this is a 19th century french slip dress, you f*cker’.

But slowly, they begin to coexist. Unable to sleep through his morning routine, Sarah begins to get up early and make him coffee, and when she’s waist-deep in steaming and threading, he gets her takeout from her favorite kosher resturant in Manhatten. She also convinces him to ask out their neighbor, the loud Italian, and he sets her up with his friend, this reporter for the Sun.

CONSIDERING AND APPRECIATING

okay, so, we know me, I have no chill which means I’m going to amend/expand your statement just a tad for historical accuracy purposes (shocking, I know).

instead of going to school together, I think esther jacobs, who is canonically a seamstress, could have been the pulitzers’ personal tailor for a time. it would have been pretty early in their childhood, probably, and while she was working, a tiny katherine would sneak off to play with a young sarah jacobs and her little brother, david, who weren’t technically supposed to be there, but the kitchen staff adored them, so they could be found quietly reading and munching on old bread. they were friends in the way that most children are friends; not in a way that encourages lasting relationships, but momentary fun and laughter that will fade as the years pass.

when esther jacobs was let go after two, three years, david and sarah jacobs never came back to the pulitzers, and never heard from the little girl with the swinging brown curls, tied up with a pretty bow.

but then david became davey, and davey was best friends with jack, and suddenly- poof! enter katherine plumber pulitzer, stage left.

davey is, of course, thrilled to see her. fortunately, so is jack. he starts talking to katherine, becoming friends, and davey’s nothing but pleased. but talking turned flirting with katherine, making her smile, making her laugh, and davey can’t seem to make himself pleased about it anymore. his friend is back, and his heart is waltzing out the door at the same tempo.

they begin dating, and davey’s trying, he is, he swears he is, but he hates it. he hates jack, he hates katherine, he hates himself for feeling this way. there is something wrong with him, he knows it, but he doesn’t know how to fix it. he wishes she had never come back, he wishes he still had his best friend, he wishes that everything would just. stop.

they break up, and davey’s heart leaps

he hates himself for that, too.

everything goes back to normal, but not really, and it’s better. jack’s eyes go from angry to happy again, and katherine seems to be perfectly content with sarah. davey feels like he exhales for the first time in decades.

they kiss. he and jack. it’s everything.

and davey’s little world comes full circle, in a way. katherine. sarah. jack. he’s happy, so happy.

and yet…a tiny voice in the back of his mind hums insistently, reminding him that he was second, second to katherine.

the circle closes, keeps spinning, and david jacobs is along for the ride. his heart is full, there is a grin on his face, and the voice in his mind whispers again and again. still. it’s enough.

he wishes it is.
