Labyrinth Fanart

I'm very lousy at this self-promotion thing, but here's my most recent Labyrinth watercolor. Done on A3-sized paper (11.69 x16.53 inches), it's my largest watercolor to date and caused me all sorts of stress since the paper was expensive and I didn't want to ruin it.

I also made a YouTube video of the process:

And since I like "As the World Falls Down" so much (that wonderful bass!), I also made a short vertical video and uploaded it to YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok to see how their audiences might differ. As expected, it was completely ignored by Instagram but had a better reception on TikTok. YouTube reacted relatively lukewarmly. It's always funny how there are people who take the trouble to downvote my videos on Youtube. 🤣

I literally just saw someone explain that Labyrinth is about a child dealing with psychological trauma from sexual abuse... And that the reason why the dick (sorry for my foul language, but I I'm really tired of coming across bullshit like that) of David Bowie / Jareth was highlighted by the pants because it's his weapon of aggression...

People really have a hard time understanding that this movie is simply a metaphor for a girl coming of age, with Jareth essentially being the pure representation of her fantasies / sexual awakening ?

Like... Why do so many people have to make things that women like perverse or negative ? It's still crazy.

I’ve long thought that this quote from Erik in the POTO novel: “If you loved me, I'd be gentle as a lamb and you could do whatever you pleased with me” and this quote from Jareth in Labyrinth: “Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave” have extremely similar vibes.

Unfortunately, I’m too tired to do a deeper analysis of this comparison, but I still thought it was an interesting parallel and wanted to share.

5. “Are you doubting my acting skills?” —Labyrith, Jareth/(Adult) Sarah (ao3)

A BARGAIN IN BAD FAITH

It had seemed like the best solution at the time. But then that was after a whole bottle of wine and a rewatch of Pretty Woman. Confident in her brilliant idea, Sarah called her friends through the vanity mirror to ask them to pass along a message. She only hesitated when Sir Didymus said in a quavering voice, “Art thou certain, milady?” However, the alcohol won out, and she answered in the affirmative.

But now, sitting in her living room with a hangover, she was pretty sure that asking the Goblin King to act as her boyfriend—the one that she’d been lying to her family about these past four months—at the wedding between her cousin and her ex was probably the stupidest idea her drunk self ever dreamed up. Especially since said magical ruler was gleefully strutting in front of her with his Well, well, well, what have we here? And I thought I had no power over you.

She pinched the bridge of her nose. “You don’t.”

He made a noise of disbelief. “Oh, but you do need me, don’t you?” he said. “To be your pretend lover at some mortal ceremony tonight.”

“Yeah, about that…” She squinted up at him, at his wild hair, his archaic clothing. She could hear her father’s voice now, demanding to know how she’d gotten herself mixed up with such an eccentric man. It would be less humiliating to just admit her “boyfriend” never existed.

Or better yet, fake a break-up?

Jareth sobered. “Oh, dear,” he said. “Surely you’re not doubting my ability to play this game.”

“It’s not a game!” Sarah groaned.

“Everything is a game, precious.” There was a flash of something hungry—inhuman—in his eyes. “Shall we set the stakes then?”

“No, I don’t—”

“If I am able to convince your family that I am, in fact, your doting paramour, then you will attend the next Beltane festival with me.”

She narrowed her eyes. “And if you lose?”

Jareth shrugged. “Then we part ways and you’re no worse off than you are now.”

There had to be a catch, but try as she might, she couldn’t find one. Besides, going to some Fae celebration seemed a small price to pay to save face—if he could manage his end of the bargain. She had her doubts.

She sighed. “Fine.”

He gave her a triumphant grin. “Wonderful.” He pressed a finger to his lips. “Now, to step into the role of—what is his name?”

“David.”

Jareth made a face. “I suppose it will have to do.” He held up a hand, flicked his wrist, and oh.

Gone was the glittering Goblin King. In his place stood a perfectly human-looking guy. Handsome, of course, but normal.

This just might work after all.

Of course, she felt very differently when she learned later how he’d tricked her. Sir Didymus was the one to sheepishly explain that only Jareth’s queen could attend Beltane with him.

Drunk Sarah really sucked.

I always come back to A Forfeit of Dreams, the unofficial fanfic sequel to Labyrinth that developed Jareth/Sarah 100% more than the original Labyrinth movie did (I love the movie, I'm not throwing stones)
