I know the answer is probably similar, but would dogs “reading” commands written on cards just be operant conditioning combined with the clever hans effect? A cool trick, but not very impressive from a scientific perspective?

It’s the same, but you’d have less success with using symbols with a dog. They have poor eyesight and vision isn’t one of their main sights.
