The word anachronism is derived from the Greek words ana, meaning against, and chronos meaning time. Literally translated anachronism means against time. This is a good way of describing an anachronism which is something, usually an object, that is found in the wrong time period. The pictures below illustrate anachronisms In this picture the telephone is an anachronism because was invented long after the ancient Greeks had died. #mnemonic #wordpower #vocabulary #vocab #grevocab #gre #sat #satvocab #gmat #gmatprep #gmatvocab #learn #learnenglish #english #englishvocabulary #vocabflashcards #languagelab #englishlanguage #elt #efl #toefl #ielts #eflteacher #flashcards #wordporn #visualvocab #visualvocabulary #powervocab #chatterjee #chatterjeelangaugelab

HOW TO UNDERSTAND UNFAMILIAR/NEW WORDS
To understand new words can be very abstruse and difficult, however I’ll explain my method in tackling a new and unfamiliar word.
HOW TO DO IT: Whenever I associate with a new word, I just simply relate it to my life or anything I can relate.
In other words, Step 1: Look at the meaning/synonym(s) of the new word. Step 2: Relate it to your life or anything. Step 3: Produce your own sentence or apply that sentence in real life.
FOR EXAMPLE: Step 1: The word Abstruse, means anything hard to understand so in other words it’s complex. Step 2:To relate it, I think of SAT and exams. Step 3:From there, I produce my own sentence: I’m currently reading the SAT book but the text is so abstruse - yep I’m definitely going to fail my SAT.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE: Step 1: The word, Acquiesce means to fully agree with no protest. Step 2: Straight away I thought of BDSM, due to the infamous movie: 50 Shades of Grey and I simply just remember it. Step 3: Anastasia Steele acquiesces to Christian Grey’s demands.
And there ya go! That’s my method of doing it. :)
N.B: Understanding words is very crucial, as without it, one cannot simply understand what the sentence is trying to deliver (hence find it difficult to grasp the concept) nor can they unfold the meaning/content.
