Saudi crown prince to visit Turkey

Saudi crown prince to visit Turkey
Tumblr media
Ankara (The Times Groupe)- The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Friday that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will visit Turkey on June 22.
After Friday prayers in Istanbul, President Tayyip Erdogan told reporters he will discuss ways to take bilateral relations to a new level with Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman during the official visit to Ankara on June 22.
Mohammed bin Salman will be welcomed by Erdogan at the presidential complex, followed by one-on-one and delegation-level meetings.
To a question about Greek tensions, he replied that Turkey will not hold this year’s High-Level Strategic Council Meeting with Greece, saying Athens, from now on, “should fend for itself.”
Erdogan said he will also attend the White House’s Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate via video link on Friday.
Political tensions have strained relations between Riyadh and Ankara in recent years, but both nations are now looking to restore them.
King Salman and Erdogan discussed bilateral relations in April and May of last year.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu met with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in July 2021, calling it “a fruitful meeting”.
Ibrahim Kalin, the spokesperson for the Turkish presidential office, announced some positive developments in relations in August.
In addition to Saudi Arabia, Turkey has also been in negotiations with Egypt and the United Arab Emirates to mend ties.

Some background on the Houthis what is happening
Following weeks of Houthi-led attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, the United States and United Kingdom have launched military strikes in Yemen in response, which the Houthis have described as “barbaric”.
The Houthis are an Iran-aligned group based in Yemen and have said their attacks are a response to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, and the international community’s failure to put an end to it.
[...]
Who are the Houthis?
The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah (supporters of God), are an armed group that control most parts of Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, and some of the western and northern areas close to Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis emerged in the 1990s but rose to prominence in 2014, when the group rebelled against Yemen’s government, causing it to step down and sparking a crippling humanitarian crisis.
The group then spent years, with Iran’s backing, fighting a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia. The two warring sides have also repeatedly tried to hold peace talks.
However, analysts say the Shia group should not be seen as an Iranian proxy. It has its own base, its own interests – and its own ambitions.
What’s the status of Yemen’s civil war?
Yemen has been in a decade-long civil war as the Houthis maintain control of parts of the country. The group has been in ceasefire talks with Saudi Arabia while Yemen’s official government is based in Aden and led by President Rashad al-Alimi.
Al-Alimi came into office in 2022 after the country’s exiled president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi ceded power to him. Relations between Hadi and the Houthis were especially fraught.
Yemen’s civil war has plunged the country into what the United Nations called “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis”, in March 2023.An estimated 21.6 million people or two-thirds of Yemen’s population are “in dire need of humanitarian assistance and protection services”, according to the UN.Fighting between Houthis and the military coalition, however, largely subsided last year. In 2023, the Yemeni rebels and government forces also exchanged about 800 prisoners over three days. The Houthis have been engaging in Omani-mediated talks with Saudi officials to negotiate a permanent ceasefire. Saudi Arabia also restored relations with Iran in 2023, raising hopes for the Yemen peace process.
Why have the Houthis attacked Red Sea ships?
The attacks began after the start of the Israel-Hamas war on 7 October.
The Houthis declared their support for Hamas and said they would target any ship travelling to Israel. It is not clear that all of the ships attacked were actually heading there.
In November they seized what they said was an Israeli cargo ship.
They since have attacked several commercial vessels with drones and ballistic missiles.

I wrote about why we shouldn't treat the allegations around Christian Horner as gossip — but as a gut check for how we treat women in Formula 1
A lot of the talk around Formula 1 seems to treat the Horner allegations like another episode of Drive to Survive. But we should be asking questions about how the sport treats women and create stronger protections — regardless about whether this specific moment shakes out. Let me know what you think about the story!

Scenes from the intense Qassam missile bombardment towards our occupied territories as part of the Al-Aqsa Flood Battle
🇸🇦🇮🇱 SAUDI ARABIA ANNOUNCES PAUSE IN NORMALIZATION PROCESS WITH ISRAEL
Two sources reporting to Reuters news have confirmed that Saudi Arabia has decided to pause the normalization process with Israel.
Saudi Arabia had been in negotiations with the United States and Israel with the hope of normalizing relations between the two countries, a goal pushed by the Biden Administration with the promise of a Defense Pact between the United States and Saudi Arabia in return.
The current war in Palestine, triggered by a Hamas offensive into Israeli territory last Saturday that saw some 1'500 Israelis killed and up to 4'000 injured, has escalated rapidly, with Israeli Defense Forces preparing for a major ground offensive into the Gaza Strip, a move the United Nations has said would cause a 'humanitarian catastrophe'.
Until the Hamas offensive was launched, Saudi and Israeli officials had been pursuing a path of normalization, with Saudi authorities indicating they would not allow its pursuit of a Defense pact with the US to be sidelined, even if Israel refused to give significant concessions over the Palestinian question.
But in the last week, with Israel's constant bombardment and siege of Gaza, photos and videos posted by Arab media have angered the Arab community throughout the Middle East.
One source familiar with Saudi thinking told Reuters the normalization process could not be continued for now and the issue of concessions to Palestinians needs to be a bigger priority when negotiations resume.
Officials speaking on the condition of anonymity to Bloomberg News described the Saudi move as a 'pause' and not an end to diplomacy.
The Biden Administration continues to be in contact with their counterparts in the Saudi government.
The Saudi government has not responded to reporter's requests for comment.
