#save the Idaho wolves
Text
Hey all,
This is a cause with a lot of nuance to it, but nothing is helped by taking the wolves off the list. Hell, it jeopardises all the progress we’ve made. If you have the time, please sign this. If you have extra time, writing a personalised message helps even more.
To learn more I’d strongly recommend the documentary The Trouble With Wolves for providing a balanced view of the issues.
Thank you all so much 🙏

Wolves are being massacred in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.
In the most recent hunting and trapping season alone, these three states slaughtered more than 700 wolves by brutal means like strangulation snares. At least 25 of them were killed simply for stepping outside the borders of Yellowstone National Park, where they're safe.
But there's hope: The Biden administration can save the wolves who remain.
In 2021 the Center for Biological Diversity filed an emergency petition to protect northern Rocky Mountains wolves under the Endangered Species Act, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service missed its deadline to respond. So we're in court to save these intelligent, social animals, who are crucial to helping their ecosystems thrive.
Will you join us?
Tell the Service to immediately restore protection to wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

"and we aren’t using wolves to pave roads anymore so that’s a plus" What... does this mean? Were parts of wolves used as material to pave roads?
Ngl I was very confused a first because I forgot I left that in the tags, but!! (tw for animal cruelty ahead, seriously, it’s bad)
I can’t find the exact page where he explains it to save my life, but on the back of Rick McIntyre’s War Against the Wolf book it reads: “Hamstrung wolves were thrown alive to packs of dogs. Pups were yanked from their dens baited with fish hooks. One community even used gray wolf carcasses to pave a road…”
I think it was either in Montana or Wyoming, maybe Idaho, where a town had used some of the bodies of dead wolves to lay down a road. I think they attempted to actually get it to work but the smell or some sort of health agency was like “nope”, so I don’t think it ever actually was seen to fruition and the bodies were removed iirc.
If I find the actual page I’ll add any extra info but that’s basically it. Really fucked up that’s for sure.

I might have the opportunity to purchase a wet tan wolf pelt, and I only want it as a wallhanger - I have no plan to mount it - but i'm confused about the difference between wet tan and dry tan. Do I have to oil and break the wet tan (which is what turns it into a dry tan, right?) in order for it to be used as a wallhanger, or can a wet tan be hung up without any damage happening?
I also asked about maintaining wallhangers a little while ago, and you said I could use diluted tanning oils on tails, etc, and rebreak it if they start getting dry. Is this the same oil used on a wet tan to dry it?
Thanks for answering! 🐾
So a wet tan is a hide that has been skinned, fleshed, pickled, detail fleshed, tanned with a tanning solution, shampooed, and oiled, but has not been broken in. The process of breaking a hide is what changes it from a wet tan to a dry tan. You're breaking the fibers of the leather to soften it, and that process also dries the hide.
Wet tans are used for taxidermy, where the hide is taken out of storage in a freezer and mounted while the tan is still damp. This is to prevent the hide from being stretched out before mounting. Breaking a hide to a dry tan often changes the measurements for the mount and makes is so the taxidermy form has to be altered or replaced to properly fit the hide.
Wet tans cannot be used at wallhangers as is. They have to be broken in or they will end up drying very stiff or have mold/mildew buildup that can ruin the hide. If you haven't broken in leather before then I don't recommend starting on an animal like a wolf. Because they're so big they require a lot of work to break to a dry tan. Their leather tends to be very thick, especially on the face and neck, and requires a lot of arm strength to stretch it along with several different sanding and breaking tools. If not done properly, the hide will dry hard which causes issues like hide tearing after a couple years (dry leather rips like paper if not oiled properly). In addition, many commercial tanneries don't do a great job removing all the flesh and oils from hides intended for taxidermy, so the hide may not be good quality for a wallhanger to begin with.
So if you want to get a hide as a wallhanger, buy a dry tanned pelt from a good commercial tannery (heard really good things overall about Wildlife Gallery tans and Moyle & Mink tans) or someone in the community who tans. My first two hides I broke in were large animals and this was before I had the right tools to handle them properly. The first one I had to throw out because I didn't have the strength to break it and it dried before I could finish it. The other was a little better but it still developed mildew in the paws and the face was super stiff because they weren't broken in/dried properly. Plus it was super fatty and not tanned well so the leather was yellow and oily and when I hung it up it leached oils onto my wall.
You can send the hide to a tannery to have it broken in for you, but it'll just save a lot of time and money to find one you like that's already dried. I just don't recommend working on anything larger than a fox or small coyote if it's your first few times doing certain processes.
Also, especially when it comes to wolves, double check where the animal was sourced. Wolf populations in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and a few other states are currently under a lot of pressure due to bad regulations that are allowing those populations to be overhunted. Ones from Alaska and Canada aren't under as much pressure but it depends on the population/subspecies.
And yep, it's the same oils! I use both Rittle's oils and TruBond oils.

Four conservation and animal protection groups sued the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today for denying their petition to protect gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains under the Endangered Species Act.
“We’re back in court to save the wolves and we’ll win again,” said Collette Adkins, carnivore conservation program director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “The Fish and Wildlife Service is thumbing its nose at the Endangered Species Act and letting wolf-hating states sabotage decades of recovery efforts. It’s heartbreaking and it has to stop.”
The petition filed in 2021 by the Center for Biological Diversity, Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society Legislative Fund and Sierra Club sought to restore federal protections to gray wolves in the northern Rockies. The Service denied the petition in February, even though its own scientists predict that rampant wolf killing under state laws could reduce the region’s wolf population from an estimated 2,534 wolves to as few as 667.
The agency has ignored warnings from conservation geneticists and other scientists that a sharp decline in population size would imperil the northern Rockies wolves, who are already at long-term risk of extinction. High levels of killing would also hurt wolf recovery elsewhere in United States, like the West Coast and southern Rockies states. Wolf populations in these states rely on wolves traveling from the northern Rockies to increase genetic diversity and ensure a healthy, stable future for the species.
“We will not idly stand by while the federal government erases decades of wolf recovery by permitting northern Rockies states to wage war on these animals,” said Margie Robinson, staff attorney for wildlife at the Humane Society of the United States. “Under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service cannot ignore crucial scientific findings. Rather than allow states to cater to trophy hunters, trappers and ranchers, the agency must ensure the preservation of wolves — who are vital to ensuring healthy ecosystems — for generations to come.”
Recent changes in Montana state laws allow wolves to be killed using bait and strangulation snares, permit a single hunter to hunt 10 wolves and trap an additional 10, and lengthen the wolf-trapping season. In Idaho, recent changes authorize the state to hire private contractors to kill wolves, allow hunters to purchase an unlimited number of wolf-killing tags and permit hunters to kill wolves by chasing them down with hounds and all-terrain vehicles.

Once upon a time, there was a teenage cow in Idaho named Tamera. She lived there with her older sister and her Aunt Bessie.
One day, her sister was taken to a different pasture.
"Your sister has gone off to be an adult cow, to get married, and to have babies."
Tamera was horrified by this. She hard about it in passing that all the female cows were to be married off to Bull with the reason being that there was not another bull around.
Now Bull was not very pleasant, so he had to be put in a separate pasture. He was so jealous that he'd rear at his own sons. He was no beautiful bull either – his muscles were too big, he had giant nostrils, and neither of his horns were even.
Yet, all Tamera heard from the married cows was how they would defend Bull!
"Bull may come across too strong, but he has a soft side."
"Bull is an excellent father. Just look at the way he rears at his own sons! He's toughening them up for the real world because he knows how hard it is."
"Bull is so romantic, but he gets busy. He was going to take me on a date this weekend, but he went with Janet instead."
"Someday you'll be Bull's wife too" said Aunt Bessie.
Tamera could not marry Bull! She loved the wide open pastures, munching on grass, and running of the stray chickens. She even loved the excitement of a snake threatening to lunge at her hoof! However, she knew there was more to life than eating grass on a field in Idaho.
She wanted to be a cow that would have adventures – with strength that was enough to put a guy like Bull in his place. She wasn't ready to settle down in one place – to pay more attention to a man and some children than herself. Maybe being a wife wasn't her destiny at all! Maybe that was okay!
She walked the field towards the old pond at moonlight and wished on that big, white moon.
"Moon lady, I desire to be someone other than myself. Someone big and strong, like you. Someone who can help people. I want to inspire cows so they know that they can be more than mamas and milkmaids. The only question is this: will you help me?"
The next morning, Tamera felt chipper and full of energy. She went to see the hens, whom always had something to talk about.
"You're in a good mood!' eyed the red hen appraisingly.
"I feel so great! I could fly!" exclaimed Tamera.
"Don't let all the fresh air get to your head" clucked the brown hen good naturedly.
Tamera ran across the fields. She did not notice when her hoofs left the ground, for she had her eyes shut.
When she felt the cool wind whip around her, her eyes popped and she felt very frightened. She was high in the sky! She let out a great big "Mooo!" and fell into the fields of a nearby farm below.
The Moon Lady had granted her powers. The only question was how she would use them.
In the year of training to be a cow-wife, Tamera secretly trained to be a "super-cow!"
She was flying freely when she noticed that a schoolhouse was on fire.
She lifted her great hooves around the metal buckets in the barnyard, scooping in the pond water within the buckets, then flying vertically (not horizontally – so that the bucket water wouldn't fall out!) She deposited the water on top of the building – effectively dousing the fire!
The firefighters were astounded to find out that the fire ended before they had even arrived. The townspeople and the firefighters pointed and cheered in surprise as they saw a beautiful cow flying away.
Her next assignment was a California hippie running away from a pack of wolves. Tamera suspected he may be a tree-hugger of some sort. No matter, Tamera let out a great big moo at the wolves. They scampered away, whimpering at the sight of a flying cow.
Word spread all about Idaho regarding "Supercow!"
"I heard her hooves could lift four bulls in one go!"
"She saved two families from going down giant rapids!"
"God, she's so pretty!"
Tamera woke up one night to hear a loud cricket chirping in her ears.
"I want to be your sponsor" said the cricket with a deadpan expression.
James the Cricket had ALL the connections. He agreed to fly over Idaho to get the scoop on happenings. Meanwhile, Tamera would share with him some of her feed.
So they went on fighting crime while Tamera pretended to be a regular cow by day.
"Where's Bull?" exclaimed a cow-wife.
"Oh no! Bull!" shouted another cow-wife.
The cows were in a frenzy, searching for their husband. Meanwhile, Tamera sat and gloated.
"Serves him right" said Tamera.
"Um, aren't you supposed to be helping him Supercow?" asked James the Cricket.
"Whom? Bull?" asked Tamera. She gave a tight laugh. "No, I would never rescue him in my life. Besides, he fathered 28 children! I'm sure he's capable of handling himself."
"I thought superheroes were selfless" said James before flying away.
Then Aunt Bessie trotted over.
"What on God's green earth are you doing?" asked Aunt Bessie. "Sitting on your bum while Bull is missing."
"He is not my husband" muttered Tamera matter-of-factly.
Aunt Bessie stomped her hooves.
"Now you stop it with that attitude or I'll wash your mouth with soap! Not everyone can choose who they marry, and not everyone can be a super-strong cow either!"
"You know?"
"The question is" says Aunt Bessie, "Will you use your powers to set an example, or will you be just like Bull?"
The first place Tamera looked for Bull was the hens. They were remarkably quiet.
"Hey guys" greeted Tamera. "Has anyone seen Bull?"
"Not us!" said the black hen.
"Sorry!" muttered the red hen.
"You guys aren't very friendly today," observed Tamera, "Have I done or said something wrong?"
The brown hen sighed.
"Fine" muttered the brown hen. "If you must know, rooster took him to the barn attic."
"Something about Chickay cows and how they want humans to 'eat more chicken!" stated the red hen.
For those who don't know "Chickay" is a very popular chicken-themed fast-food joint in the South.
Rooster walked back and forth as Bull sat helplessly, tied with rope.
"For the last time, I did not work for the Chickay company."
"Yeah right" clucked Rooster. "You're the most attractive bull in Idaho. Surely someone was scouting you for modeling. Every cow is in love with you."
"Not every cow" murmured Bull.
"Ah em" coughed Tamera.
They both turned.
"Tamera?" gulped Bull.
"You're 'Supercow?'" cackled Rooster.
She stared them both down, and then sighed.
"It's not like I want to be here" stated Tamera. "I only heard that you were holding Bull hostage, and his wives will freak out if you don't let him go."
"Tamera" sighed Rooster. "I have to say, I am impressed. I thought you would be another one of Bull's wives."
"Fat chance" muttered Tamera.
"I can see now that I clearly was wrong. You are far too good for him. Join me. We can take control of every farm and soon the world. Think of what we could do together! Ending chicken farms and cow slaughter houses as we know it!"
"Rooster, Bull is not the Chickay cow."
"How do you know?" asked Rooster. "He seems pretty full of himself."
Tamera went over, lifted Bull's tale, and showed them the branded mark.
Bill hung his head in shame.
"I'll let you go Bull" said Tamera, "On one condition – you divorce the wives that don't want to be with you, and let cow-wives marry whom they want."
Both Rooster and Bull keeled over in laughter.
"Women!" exclaimed Rooster.
"Marrying whom they want!?" bellowed Bull.
Both howled with laughter. Tamera then decided to tell them the story of the Moon Lady. They didn't laugh anymore.
"You mean the hens can beat me up?" asked Rooster.
Tamera nodded.
So they both agreed, allowing stray roosters and bulls to come in. They romanced the women who loved them, and gave space to those who didn't. Bull was happy and so was Rooster – for they felt truly loved.
Tamera is still not married, nor does she have kids! She flies around Idaho and the West inspiring young cows to take charge of their own life.
She is SUPERCOW!

Guys, I know there's a lot happening in the planet right now but I need people to see this.
They're killing wolves by the hundreds in Idaho.
Ever since Trump's idiotic idea of getting rid of the act that protected the gray wolf from hunters and trappers, the wolves have been endangered. Yesterday, July 1, the Idaho "wolf harvest" began.
Tumblr media
It's BARBARIC and INJUST!
The US government has always had a problem with wolves and its not the first time they go on a wolf-killing rampage. This will destroy the feeble balance nature has! This affects the ecosystems of not only the US but also Canada, maybe Mexico too.
This could cause an ecological disaster.
Please, help save the wolves. They're part of an important group of predators that keep balance.
The petition is here. If some of you can share it or sign it I'll be eternally grateful.
#relistwolves
They have the right to live just like you or me.
