The Ocean's Purpose: Why It Matters:

Did you know that the ocean is responsible for producing at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe? That's right! Each breath we take is a gift from our vast and powerful ocean. Beyond oxygen production, the ocean also acts as a sanctuary for the Earth's remarkable biodiversity. It is home to millions of unique species, from the tiniest plankton to the majestic whales that grace our seas.

But the ocean's importance doesn't stop there. It serves as the primary source of protein for over a billion people worldwide. It nourishes our bodies and sustains coastal communities by providing an abundance of fish and seafood. Moreover, the ocean plays a significant role in our global economy. By 2030, an estimated 40 million people will be employed in ocean-based industries, contributing to the growth and prosperity of nations around the world.

Utilizing the constraint recipe Type + Image, SAVE depicts the ocean we must desperately save. Originally starting out with the takeaway statement “PRESERVE,” the single word save better suited the framing of the masked image, the overall tone of the piece, and the central placement required of the text, allowing the element to use up more space to enhance legibility without taking away from the negative space. Subtle stroke lines were added to clearly define the individual letters within the amalgamated frame made of text.

Spent the afternoon with the northern resident orca whales (A50’s and A54’s) and a small pod of pacific white sided dolphins. The dolphins are lucky they didn’t end up on the lunch menu, as the resident killer whales only eat fish. . The dolphins are very fast swimmers, hence difficult to photograph. I was happy when several surfaced at the same time as the orcas!! .
