Sloths are relatively common on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, but they can be very difficult to spot as they are exquisitely blended in with their rainforest environments. Sloths culture green-tinted lichen and algal species to grow in their fur to aid in this camouflage. This is what I came for. This is what has kept me going through biting insects, bruised fingers, and sweat dripping humidity. 20.5 meters up in the canopy = 67.24 feet hanging from a huge nutmeg family tree. This tree and all the organisms that live in its layered canopy could die this year. Can you see the cut down tree next to my nature journal in the picture? Opening tonight at Christ Episcopal Church, in their Historic Chapel, 90 Kings Highway, Middletown, NJ, my series of paintings from the early 90’s titled, “The Crosses We Bear”. These paintings were my response to the then brewing problems of global warming and climate change. To call attention to these issues I used the cross shape apart from its usual religious association as a powerful symbol of pain and hope. Needless to say, these are even more pressing issues now. The painting above the altar is “Titled Crucified Tree”, 90”x59”, oil on shaped canvas. The large painting of the palm tree on fire, is titled “Burning the Tree of Life”, 93”x77”, oil on shaped canvas. All the other paintings are various sizes, oil on shaped canvas. There is some collage in the “Endangered Monarchs” painting. This is dated 1993. They are now on the endangered species list. All together there are 10 paintings and 4 framed works on paper in the show. The opening tonight is from 5:30-7:30 if you’re in the area. There will be a tent outside for refreshments. Gibbons And Me Part 2 In 1980 I responded to a request for volunteers to help in a refugee camp for Laotian Refugees in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. I was housed with a couple others in a run down house with no glass in the windows. In front there were a few tall trees along a driveway between our place and a family that did both missionary and charity work. In 2 of the trees in the closest was a Macaque and in another tree there was the White-Handed Gibbon. Now I would never be comfortable keeping these primates as pets/guard primates but back then I was not as aware and they were not my primates. One event started me on the road to being an advocate for gibbons. I don’t remember how t happened but or day the gibbon got loose. So I took chase. I followed the gibbon over rooftops and a tree but there was no way I could keep up. Thankfully the gibbon ended up in nearby Wat (Buddhist Temple) where a monk caught the gibbon. I began my journey to not only learn more but to stop the exotic pet trade and advocate for organisations that work with and for gibbons.
