Marry Me! - Overall Review
Tumblr media
So I watched this because I loved the Webtoon it is based on so much and I seriously have no regrets about this life choice. I’ll try to be concise, but there’s a lot that I liked about this drama.
Plot
The story is about Akiyasu Shin and Sawamoto Himari who agrees to some sort of a contract marriage based on a new law implemented to protect people unemployed. Slowly, they navigate through this relationship to figure out what they want from it and what way it should evolve to.
It’s a very soft and wholesome story, with the growth of both characters being super important. Every side story just brings a new element to help them navigate the different challenges of married life. All of it is just beautiful and satisfying. They don’t leave any plot hole. Even though their mutual feelings gradually grows, I wouldn’t say it solely focuses on their love, but mostly on how to become a good partner to each other, how to be considerate of each other’s needs without assuming stuff. And it’s a lot about personal growth, Shin being a very emotionless person and Himari being extremely introverted and solely living for the sake others instead of her own happiness.
In this story, the characters make mistakes, questionable choices, but it all feels so natural, not forced for the plot. Because they keep learning throughout the process. Sometimes, even in the wrong, they remain stubborn because they’re willing to give it all to protect what’s dear to them. And while they’re growing, evolving, they still remain mostly the same, which was refreshing. They’re not doing a complete 180, they’re just trying their best and it hits so close to home when you think about what real life is.
I loved how even though the story was going on very naturally, they still integrated some of the quirkyness that is very specific to Japanese dramas. It felt also just like a reference to the fact that this was a comic to begin with.
Story wise, maybe I’m biased because I loved the Webtoon so much, it’s a 10/10. It followed the original plot perfectly, with some cut scenes, but that’s alright, because the important parts were still there and it worked wonders.
Acting
For those who don’t know me or haven’t read any of my reviews previously, I’m not a Japanese speaker, hence I don’t consider myself fully apt to judge the acting. So please consider this as the opinion of someone who understands some basics of Japanese but is far from being able to communicate in that language.
I was pleased with the acting. It simple, yet meaningful. Especially from the two leads. You could see the way they changed. Also they’re both characters that aren’t that expressive on their deep emotions, but as they grew closer to each other, you could notice the tenderness in their eyes, even before their actions would speak of it.
The quirkyness was super well integrated too, it didn’t feel exaggerated, even though it was exaggeration. I really enjoyed that too.
Overall, this gets a 9/10, because nothing’s perfect and there were moments I was less convinced but still! Very good job!
Aesthetic
I loved the visuals of the drama. It felt super... normal. You know, everything felt like a real home, instead of a made up one with accessories to make pretend. At first I felt Himari’s home felt so crowded and I don’t know, but it slowly grew on me. I especially enjoyed the fact that appart from the house and the office, there wasn’t many location, so we were always in a constant surrounding and when out of it, it was bringing growth to the characters. I liked the simplicity. The only point that should be a little improved is the lighting, in Himari’s home, it was quite dark quite often.
I also enjoyed the soundtrack. It wasn’t very important, but it still was complementary of the scenes and the drama, I especially thought the ending was quite cute.
Overall, it visually get a nice 8/10 for me!
Should you watch this drama?
I absolutely recommend this drama. It’s soft and sweet, without being annoying and overly cheesy. The story albeit somewhat nonsensical with the whole NEET protection law, is still very relatable. The characters are not annoying. The rythm of the story is well paced. The episodes are short, but efficient. Seriously, there’s close to nothing bad to this drama. I feel it would be a waste not to enjoy it, so go ahead and put that on your to watch list.

Marry Me
Marry Me is a 2020 japanese drama. It is a 10 episode short drama. It's about a newly passed law wherein a government worker and a person who was registered for the program will get married. According to the drama, due to the low population, they decided to do this law in order to have more children. Program was also called NEET. So I may use that term later.
This drama has only 23 mins per episode, so you can watch it in one sitting. The main characters are Sawamoto Himari and Akiyasu Shin. Himari became a (somehow) shut-in girl due to recent events. Akiyasu is a government worker and was chosen to be their first pair (or first trial) for the law.

I have to say this drama is good. I mean, you may think that the pacing of the story was fast, but then it was also understandable. You won't miss a detail. No unnecessary information was given. Everyone in the drama was nice. I have to say thank you for the early scenes of the people who'd like for them to break up. And they didn't do much about it. They just gave up, like, okay you guys live together. Which I really like because I don't have to get hurt. I also like how Himari can sometimes be innocent but matured. You'll get what I mean if you watch it. I also felt the love between Himari and Shin. Even though you started as strangers, it really is better if you talk to them especially since you'll be spending your whole life together. I also like how Shin's family was able to fix their relationship and be happy as a family with Himari.
My rating for this would be 10/10. I was supposed to give it a 9 but then I should stop asking for more lol because it was really enough. If there are things that I didn't like, I have to think about it. Well, maybe there's one. Momotaro, Himari's cat. I thought Momotaro would have a like a big part to their married life, but it didn't. Not that I did not like it but I was just curious. Like what would Himari do if Momotaro died, what would Shin do as well? But hey, thank you for not including that. It would definitely give us a sad part. Also, there are some parts wherein you can predict what will happen next, but you really don't have to worry. It's not a bad thing to expect what will happen tho.

マリーミー ❤
Tumblr media
A very simple yet heartwarming drama. The arranged marriage plot sounds to cliche but the NEET protection law was introduced as the main concept in the drama making it so unique.
However this experimental law as the male lead insists needs to be revised to protect the rights of the people who were used as trials for the study.
But in reality we wanted to be with someone we feel safe and loved. It turns Shin Akiyasu was not only a kind companion to lonely Sawamoto Himari but treats her as a family. Himari have lived a very lowkey life since her grandparents left her.
There is no possesive secondary leads instead this focuses more on building the relationship of two people and gaining each others trust and respect throughout the process.
The ending was a big surprise and it was so cute. They had an adorable family.
Kumada Rinka is undeniably pretty and she shared a very good chemistry with Seto Toshiki.I would definitely want to see them in again in another drama.

Marry Me! - Episode 6
Tumblr media
I thought I broke my weed eater, but everything’s fine! I still deserve a break, because it’s hot outside and it’s more comfy inside!
Shin follows the two of them until they reach the house and she tells him she’s not Sawamoto anymore, since she got married. He’s kind of in shock. Shin chose that moment to come in and introduce himself. So Mitsugi is Himari’s classmate. He doesn’t seem to like Shin. Also, who else thinks that Shin is upset because Himari speaks more familiarly to her classmate than her husband?
Shin tells Mitsugi how they are test subjects for the NEET law and it angers that guy. But Shin actually wants Himari to make her choices herself. And explore other options if there are. Meaning... is he telling him to date her! O: In the end he doesn’t stay over for dinner, but asks Himari out the next day.
During that kind of ish date Mitsugi tells Himari that he could be the one making her happy if Shin isn’t the one. But she kindly rejects him, saying that all that matters to her is that Shin is happy. On Shin’s way back home, Mitsugi apologizes for being rude and says he realized that they both care more about the other than themselves and that it’s reflected in their wedding.
When Shin gets back home, he finds Himari passed out drunk. She was upset that people thought that she wasn’t happy, even though Shin is only being nice to her because of work. He gets upset that she doesn’t understand that it’s not just work to him and that he needs her. He promises he’ll always need her and she falls asleep. So he takes her to bed and sleeps by her bedside. When she wakes up the next morning, he confesses his feelings for her and she answers positively.
And this is the perfect ending! I thought he was leaning in for a kiss, but they just touch forehead and it’s cute. I like it.
