I Don’t Want to Go (story, semi-old)

“Nightbird?”    “Shh, save your breath.” “Nightbird....” Leapingdusk tried to raise her head. It proved to be too much for her, and she settled it back onto her mossy nest. “I don’t want to leave Mallowpaw or Scalepaw.”   Nightbird pressed herself more closely against her daughter’s form, grooming the fur between her ears. “You’re not going to,” she reassured, although with a heavy heart she had to admit to herself that that very likely wasn’t true.

    “I don’t want to,” Leapingdusk moaned. “I want to see them become warriors. They will be so good at it. I want to see their kits. I thought that one day I would be an elder, with my grandkits visiting with their parents, and maybe someday a new generation of kits would come along.” Leapingdusk shuddered. “I don’t want to leave them, Nightbird.”         Nightbird blinked away the tears that were beginning to form in her eyes. Leapingdusk needed her to be strong right now. She focused on grooming. How could this be happening? First was her other daughter, Leapingdusk’s littermate, Hoppaw-- died because of an infection. Then was Lizardfoot, her mate, who had  developed cataracts and wasn’t able to see the snake by his paws.    Nightbird looked down at her daughter. What she saw was so tiny, so fragile. Nightbird could clean her whole pelt with two licks. She always had to do six. Six licks is what always calmed Leapingkit down. Nightbird had tried since the sun set to calm Leapingdusk down, like she had done all those moons ago. She had been fine at first, smiling weakly at her mother. But with every moment, her sorrow grew, and now she lay, shaking with sobs.      Nightbird sheathed and unsheathed her claws. It wasn’t fair! What did Leapingdusk do to deserve this terrible illness? 'Starclan, answer me, you foxhearts!'        Leapingdusk mumbled something inaudible. Nightbird leaned closer to her head. “What was that, Leap?” She asked gently.     Leapingdusk struggled to speak, then broke out into a fit of coughing. Nightbird leaped to her paws “Sagel--” She began to call for the medicine cat, then stopped herself when Leapingdusk touched her paw to Nightbird’s own. The coughing subsided.      “I don’t want them to go through this,” Leapingdusk sniveled, “they can’t lose their mother.”  Nightbird wanted to repeat what she had said earlier, how that’s not going to happen. As much as she wanted it to be true, she couldn’t lie to her daughter now. “They’ll be okay.”     “I know,” Leapingdusk attempted a smile. “I know they will. Can you help them?”  Nightbird paused. What did that mean? “What?”    “Willowtail….he’s not good with this. He’s not good with comforting, with being there when he’s needed. He cares, but how could they know that? They’re only kits. I can’t be there,” Leapingdusk’s voice cracked.    Nightbird’s heart shattered in her chest and her throat closed. Leapingdusk knows that she’s going to die. She must have known for some time, if she had decided to speak with her mother about this.     Leapingdusk stopped to catch her breath, then went on. “They need you. You’re a good mother! You can be there. Please!”         Nightbird couldn’t hold back a sob of her own. She was an elder, had been one for a few seasons now. Unlike her daughter, she wasn’t young when she had her kits. She wasn’t sure how long she would even be able to take care of Mallowpaw and Scalepaw, no matter how much she would want to.  Her eyes locked with Leapingdusk’s-- pleading, desperate, despaired, the both of them. Nightbird wrapped herself as much as she could around her daughter. “Okay,” she agreed as she started to groom again. “I promise I will be there for them.”

Little view at recently mentioned Leapingdusk while she was dying in the medicine den.

Sageleaf was the Dark Forest cat (then living medicine cat) who let her die by neglecting her and giving her false medicine. Leapingdusk wasn’t aware of what was happening until the very last moment, much like many others.

Cinderpaw is badly wounded after being hit by a monster and her apprentice training is suspended

Tulipkit dies. His Star Name is Tulipbloom

Brokentail and his rogues attack the camp by are defeated and driven off. Brokentail is blinded in the attack and taken captive by ThunderClan. Clawface, one of Brokentail’s rogues, is killed as well

Princess gives one of her kits, Cloudy, to Fireheart to join ThunderClan. He is renamed Cloudkit and fostered by Brindleface

ShadowClan

Applefur gives birth to Volewhisper’s kits Rowankit, Lavenderkit, and Cedarkit. Lavenderkit soon dies after showing symptoms of a strange illness that Cloudypelt’s never seen before. Lavenderkit’s Star Name is Lavenderbreeze

WindClan

Swamppaw is finally made an apprentice, and their mentor is Nightoak

RiverClan

Silverstream falls in love with a ThunderClan warrior, Graystripe, after she saves him from drowning

Mosspelt gives birth to Frogleap’s kits Robinkit, Woodkit, and Lightkit

Birdsong dies from eating poisoned fish

Later on in the season, there is a devastating flood. During the flood, the following cats die: Reedtail, Scalepaw, Robinkit, Woodkit, Heronflight, and Frogleap. Scalepaw’s Star Name is Scalepelt, Robinkit’s Star Name is Robingleam, and Woodkit’s Star Name is Woodstream

After the flood, Sedgewhisker gives birth to a litter of kits: Emberkit, Shorekit, Flutterkit, and Moonkit

In the famine in the aftermath of the flood, Sedgewhisker is unable to produce enough milk and Shorekit, Flutterkit, and Moonkit starve to death. Their Star Names are Shoresong, Fluttersigh, and Moonsky.

Oakpaw becomes an apprentice and is mentored by Wetfoot

Sootheart gives birth to Cinderfur’s kits Turtlekit, Quietkit, and Rubblekit

WindClan

Morningflower gives birth to her kits: Storkkit, Gorsekit, and Quailkit

Fireheart and Graystripe of ThunderClan help bring WindClan back to their old territory. Tallstar is incredibly grateful (and recognizes his once-boyfriend Jake’s kid) and promises a favor for Fireheart

Later in the season, Tawnypaw, Hawkpaw, and Dovepaw become apprentices and their mentors are Wrenflight, Mudclaw, and Barkface respectively. Swampkit’s apprenticeship is delayed due to the severity of their injuries

RiverClan

Greenflower gets sick and dies in her sleep. Lilystem takes in Dragonflykit and Duckkit

A battle between RiverClan and ThunderClan occurs. During the battle, Whitefoot is accidentally killed by Graystripe

Later on in the season, Heavypaw, Scalepaw, Shadepaw, Duckpaw, and Dragonflypaw become apprentices and their mentors are Blackclaw, Loudbelly, Stonefur, Petaldust, and Grasswhisker respectively

Now that her kits have become apprentices, Lilystem retires to the Elders’ Den
