In the shelter of a glasshouse Pelargonium myrrhifolium var. coriandrifolium was scrambling over the ground. This tender perennial thrives with a free draining soil and full sunshine.

The species Pelargonium graveolens (rose geranium, sweet-scented geranium, lemon scented geranium) is one of the most commonly grown of the scented leaf pelargoniums as it is easy to grow and propagate. The foliage is rose-lemon scented and it has mauve flowers. This plant species is used in the production of essential oils for the perfume and cosmetics industry.

Plant of the Day

Against a sunny, south wall at the Cruickshank Botanic Gardens, Aberdeen, Scotland, the sprawling sub-shrub Melianthus major (honey flower, peanut bush) makes an exotic feature. This plant has large glaucous, pinnate leaves that when bruised smell of marmite or peanut butter. It comes from South Africa so is not reliably hardy in colder areas and can be mulched in winter with light materials to protect the underground shoots for the next season.

Ideal for the front of a sunny and well-drained border is Salvia 'Royal Bumble' (sage). This perennial flowers from late spring to autumn. The fragrant foliage is evergreen unless it is cut back by frost and so may need protection in colder regions.

Perfect for this container is Rosmarinus officinalis 'Foxtail' (rosemary) which is on the edge of a terrace and helps transition to a dry garden. This aromatic, evergreen shrub creates branches that arch to become semi-prostrate. The small, pale blue flowers are produced from spring to late autumn.

Grown from seed Centratherum intermedium 'Pineapple Sangria' (Brazilian button) has cheerful purple flowers and foliage with a pineapple fragrance. The plants were growing with the Pelargonium 'Lady Plymouth' which has variegated, strongly eucalyptus-scented foliage. Both these tender plants thrive in full sun and are drought tolerant.

The short evergreen shrub Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote' (English lavender) is ideal for a low flowering hedge. The small deep violet-purple flowers are in dense, aromatic spikes that are popular with pollinators.

A display of Pelargonium (geranium) cultivars has been set out at the Beth Chatto Garden, Essex, UK. These plants are grown for their scented leaves, which can smell of rose, eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, orange, balsam or apple and their flowers, which have just started to bloom. These plants need a well-drained growing medium and a sunny position to help develop the aromatic oils in the foliage.

Yet to be cut back by the frost of winter the Salvia elegans (pineapple sage) is still flowering. This tender perennial is from Mexico and Guatemala with aromatic leaves. Cuttings from the non-flowering growth will be rooting in a heated glasshouse to provide plants for next year.

The old flower stems of the spreading perennial Mentha longifolia (horse mint, buddleia mint, brook mint, water mint, long-leaved mint) look like vertical silver sculptures until the winter weather starts to erode them. This herb has long green-grey leaves with a musty scent and nectar-rich tapering spires of tiny, pale purple or white flowers valued by pollinators.

At the National Trust's Melford Hall, Long Melford, Sudbury, the Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica (sweaty betty, biennial clary) was producing tall stems bearing many pink to white bracts and soft blue and white tiny flowers. This hardy short-lived perennial or biennial will seed freely and grow in any reasonable soil in full sun. The plant does have a very distinctive scent!

This half hardy annual plant was new to me and I discovered it growing at Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK. Cladanthus arabicus 'Criss-Cross' (Palm Spring's daisy, golden crown) has a curious growth habit. A mound of pleasantly scented, feathery foliage is formed, bearing all summer long a profusion of large, fragrant, golden-yellow flowers. From around each of the first flowers (appearing in as little as six weeks from seed) appear four or five new stems each bearing a new flower and so growth continues... until the frost arrives.
