You’re bad. And you should feel bad.
Contrary to what the anti-Catholics I grew up around told me, telling yourself that you’re bad so that you can feel bad? That’s not the point of Lent.
But what about all the Lent stuff? The fasting and abstinence? The Stations of the Cross? The penance services? The whole aesthetic of Lent just seems so…
If that’s how you want to see it.
But if you have an open mind, may I offer a different perspective?
Growing up on small farm, we didn’t have a lot of money to buy new equipment. Because of that, we took very good care of the aging tractors and machinery that we did have. But over time, things still wore out.
Even though we picked all the stones out of the fields, the cutting edges on the field cultivator would still wear out and need to be replaced.
Even though we made sure the fuel storage tank wasn’t rusty, the fuel filter on the tractor would still fill up with gunk and need to be cleaned out.
Because my father knew this, he made time for scheduled maintenance. It was the reason why we were able to keep everything running, even on our shoestring budget.
When it comes to your soul, to your walk of faith, to the care and maintenance of you, Lent is very much like that.
Because even if you and I take very good care of ourselves spiritually and emotionally, things will wear out, things will fill up with gunk.
Our holy mother Church knows this about you and me, which is why the Church makes time for our scheduled maintenance – in the form of Lent.
And all of the Lent stuff? The fasting and abstinence? The Stations of the Cross? The penance services? The whole aesthetic of Lent?
It’s all designed to support your soul, to support you in your walk of faith, to support the care and maintenance of you. To help you keep everything running.
By renewing what’s worn out. By cleaning out the gunk.
This Lent, take advantage of what the Church is offering.
Become who God made you to be, make time for your scheduled maintenance.

Went to gastroenterology today to schedule some scopes and discuss The Heartburn. Dr.: you should cut out acidic foods like spicy and coffee. Me, extremely dubious: I can try but can't make any guarantees :( Dr.: here is an information paper Me, reading later: YOU WILL GET MY MINT WHEN YOU PRY IT FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!! Why does this list contain everything that makes eating food pleasant? I was willing to negotiate on spicy or fried food or citrus and make a sincere effort to cut down on the coffee, but if mint is going, all other bets are off.
And then I immediately went and got an emotional support burrito and a soda.
I am not good at suffering or self-denial, especially in the realm of food. I fear that this is not going to go well.

i hate to say it because of consumerism or whatever but there really is so much power in having your nails, hair, and lashes done! it’s the doll aesthetics for ME cause what do i look like giving anything less? i feel like everyone’s tired right now but let’s embrace our inner Venus and be a bit vain and cultivate our inner doll real quick! there’s literally nothing like living the doll life like it ain’t for the weak!

I'm pretty sure that Nancy's response to S1 was to covertly try to learn every skill that might potentially be useful or save her life/other people's lives--first by gaining basic competence, then mastery. Same with absorbing every piece of knowledge that she might need until she could recite it by heart. Not as a badass, strong woman, but as a traumatized kid who doesn't ever want to feel helpless or unprepared ever again.
Needless to say, this is a tall order.
But I think about that sometimes. Nancy scouring every source she can find, in her free time when she's not studying or with her boyfriend or watching Holly or something. Nancy going out to the woods to practice shooting alone (thinking about Jonathan that day in the woods and how he's not there now because they seem to be floating past each other), learning how guns actually work and actual proper gun safety. First aid, and then maybe how to theoretically treat things a little beyond your basic first aid--everything she can glean from books and guides, and then whatever she can surreptitiously coax out of her friends' nurse mothers and the family doctor when she goes in for a physical. She finds herself talking to hunters and farmers and anyone who knows anything about how to not die in the woods and things she didn't know about the area, and they're kind of amused and confused, but if she smiles bright and wide and laughs a little ditzy, they'll answer her questions and maybe give up a little more that she wouldn't have thought to ask. Learns how to use tools she's never had any interest in before, because how do you know when you'll need to use them? Starts to see the world very differently. Starts to mentally catalogue potential resources and redundancies and maps...
Plus, you know, at some point she expands her gun cache (which is its own deal and I get emotional thinking about this kid with a drawer full of guns because she's afraid and wants some way to keep the fear at bay, and apparently that means guns, even though guns never worked on the monsters at all).
Anyway. She turns her fear into hyper-competence and action, but it's still fear. Endlessly preparing for something, no way of knowing what that something will be or when it will come. No way to shut it off.
