Halfway through the quarter already?! It really flew by this time…
🎧 - burn alive (the last dinner party)
☕️ - ginger tumeric tea
📝 - finishing up biochem set
📝 - finishing my annotated bibliography
🌱 - ID: peruvian pepper tree (Schinus molle)
Fun fact: while the peruvian pepper tree has long been utilized by the indigenous peoples of mesoamerica for its antiseptic and antibiotic properties, it is currently being studied for its potential antidepressant effects as well!

#1872 - Muellerina eucalyptoides - Creeping Mistletoe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was in Melbourne for most of the last week, which wasn’t ideal for spotting new species since I barely left the CBD the entire time. That said, I did spot these mistletoes growing in the London Plane trees along Flinders Street outside our apartment, which was quite surprising - I’ve never seen native mistletoes growing on exotic trees before, and actually getting established on the trees seemed unlikely since there’s no native bushland nearby for birds to bring the seeds from. Mistletoe fruit passes through a bird in well under an hour, and emerges so sticky that the bird has to physically wipe its arse on the branch to get them off - which, of course, is exactly what the mistletoe wants.
So I did some digging, and it turns out there was a project in 2018 by ecologist Lee Harrison, to plant 800 mistletoe seeds in street trees around the inner city and CBD.
He had good reason to, as well - the foliage, flowers and fruit of mistletoes is highly desirable to a range of species, and if all the mistletoes are removed from an area the bird diversity can drop by a third. David Watson of Charles Sturt University has described that experiment as "one of the strongest described effects of what's called a keystone species — one that has a disproportionate influence on the ecosystem."
Creeping Mistletoe, native to much of the SE of Australia, was chosen because it’s slow-growing, and while its native hostplant is usually eucalypt they also do well on a range of exotic trees that includes Oaks, Prunes, Pepper Trees (Schinus), Birch, and assorted fruit trees in the genus Prunus. And since London Plane Platanus × acerifolia aren’t much good for anything other than causing hayfever and asthma, planting as many mistletoes as the trees can support is a great idea.

Floral
A daring interpretation of the rose, where the flower reveals itself as urban and mineral.
The perfumer Céline Perdriel highlights two exceptional varieties of rose: the Damascena rose from Turkey, with its floral, fruity and spicy notes, and the Centifolia rose from Grasse, with its round, warm and honeyed facets.
In ROSE ARDOISE, the perfumer plays on ambiguities, combining femininity and masculinity, transparency and texture, minerality and sensuality. The fragrance opens with fresh, spicy notes of schinus molle and nutmeg that reflect the clear, crystalline vibration of sage. Then, the rose expresses itself entirely before progressively melting into an overdose of ambroxan.
A singular composition that affirms its androgynous and contemporary character.
Top notes: Nutmeg, Schinus molle Heart notes: Rose, Sage Base notes: Vetiver, Leather, Ambroxan

Say "Teotihuacan" 10x fast
For many reasons it's important to preserve, honor and acknowledge the original stewards of existing lands. Admittedly, I struggled with new syllables and practiced several times [TEO-TI-WA'KAN], [TEO-TI-WA'KAN], [TEO-TI-WA'KAN]. Now, here's what no one struggles with...feeling in AWE! Like jaw dropping, ancient, archeological type awe.
According to Wikipedia (I know), "Teotihuacan is known today as the site of many architecturally significant Mesoamerican pyramids, namely the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. It is considered as the first advanced civilization on the North American continent, with a population estimated at 125,000, making it at least the sixth-largest city in the world during its epoch."
Tumblr media
"The city covered 8 square miles and up to 90 percent of the total population of the valley resided there. Teotihuacan is thought to have been established around 100 BCE (Before Common Era), and may have lasted until the 8th century CE, but its major monuments were systematically burned around 550 CE."
If visiting, here are my Gitanavida Pro tips:
Watch out for the Jaguar whistle. Sounds wayyy too real.
Watch out for those steps. Wayyy too steep.
Watch out for that sun. Wayyy too hot. Water, sunblock and hats are a must.
Photo buddy optional but handy. Shout out to my Bolivian homie!
Mezcal tour…wayyy worth it.

While visiting, I also noticed a tree that was all around. Turns out it's the infamous tree, as in the famous song (clip below), "Lena de Pirul". I then learned that "Pirúl (Schinus molle) is also known as Árbol Del Perú, Peruvian Peppertree, and in Nahuatl, it is Pelonquáhuitl and is native to the Peruvian Andes. The indigenous put a high value on the pirúl because of its many uses."
