Finally I have some time to answer this!

9: What/who inspired you to start making gifs

ooh, I don't know if it was any one person, but i just loved the idea of doing it. i asked a coworker who is good at making gifs for help, then i started reading tutorials and improving my process. so i guess the answer is "all of the amazing gifmakers out there" and also "dan levy for providing so much fodder for giffing."

31. Do you schedule/queue posts or do you post right after you’re done

usually i queue to give myself a little buffer in case i remember i want to change something before it posts. but sometimes i'm so excited to post i just do it right away!

35. Do you change your giffing style a lot or do you have a set routine

I don't change it much - i do pretty straightforward gifs, i've never sat down and tried to figure out how to make fancy ones. i greatly admire those who do, but i generally focus on the content (like all of the parallels sets i've made for Schitt's Creek/Ted Lasso and Schitt's Creek/Heartstopper.)

Once again I must face the fact that I apparently watch very little media and/or remember too few details of what I do watch.

Fine, maybe it's entertaining for you to watch me fumble through such games.

David and Patrick (Schitt's Creek).

2. Henry (Red, White & Royal Blue). I like Alex too, but for the sake of the post, I'm making choices, and I choose quiet, sad piano player.

3. Rebecca (Ted Lasso). If she's on screen, I can't take my eyes off of her.

4. Paul (Shrinking). How fun it was to watch Harrison Ford in this.

5. Hmm. . . Barbie? Of Barbie. Honestly, I think driving to a parallel universe while singing "Closer to Fine" might fix me.

6. Annie? I rewatched Annie (1982) this year. Singing! Tap dancing! Such talent and longing! She deserves a big house and a dog. Although Miss Hannigan is relatable too. Tough choice.

7. Matilda, of Matilda (1996). I watched this for the first time a couple of weeks ago? Very cute, magic powers, likes books.

8. This is where I realize both that I can't count and that I have seen nothing else. But I saw Les Misérables on the stage. I love Éponine.

9. Oh wait, I saw The Lake and liked it, that's right. Justin is super cute. And kind of a disaster.

It took me like four days to do this post. Did everyone else who wanted to do one do it already? If not, it is your turn.

i totally forgot about schitt's creek alexis ending - dead on for that being a parallel to the keely girl boss ending on ted lasso and i hated both so much!!

but at least they didn't write ted as being a dumb dick in order to get her to make that choice, unlike keeley roy and jamie 🙄

2021 Fic Year in Review

Thank you to @lilythesilly @davidbrewer @5ambreakdown for tagging me!

Total number of completed works this year:

80??? (for comparison, i wrote 24 last year after joining the SC fandom in September. god help me.)

Total word count:

the official log is 398,147, but this is skewed by collabs and the bach au, which we started in 2020 but is showing in 2021 bc that's when it was last updated. A rough estimate puts me at 253,340...ish.

Did you write more/less fic than you thought you would this year, or about what you expected?:

um, lmao. way more than i thought i would. i also didn't realize it was quite so many. i tend to write short lil plot bunnies to get them out of my mind, and i guess they added up.

What’s your favorite story you wrote this year?:

Did you take any writing risks this year?:

i don't know if i necessarily pushed myself out of my comfort zone significantly, but i did write david POV a few times, my most difficult POV.

honestly, my biggest writing risk was writing so much in such little time. starting with tropefest, i got into the dangerous habit of writing the bulk of my fest fics during the fest itself, then submitting via extension. i managed okay and the works turned out well, but it wasn't enjoyable. i'm going to try not to do that again.

(oh, i did write about death, which isn't my usual thing. [you'd always go past where our feet could touch - mind the tags!])

Most popular story you wrote this year?:

excluding co-written stories and drabble collections, by hits it's (but if baby i'm the bottom) you're the top (twylexis porn... just straight porn) and by every other measure, it's Café Tropical (Schitt's Creek, ON) Has 3.96 Stars On Yelp.

Most fun fic to write:

salt air and the rust on your door was an amazing collaboration with @schitthappens, Amanita_Fierce, @schittposting, @roguebebe, and @sunlightsymphony. producing it for elevate was a lot of work, but it bonded us all together and deepened in our friendships in a way that paralleled the ongoings of the fic.

i also collaborated with a lot of those usual suspects (@schittposting, Amanita_Fierce, @rhetoricalk, @sunlightsymphony) on measure by measure (stevie/alexis/twyla band au) and had a blast composing and playing music for the pod in addition to writing.

Biggest surprise:

i went from 'ruth? who's ruth?' to 'i would die for ruth!!' in 0-60. show this town how to kiss these stars (ruthie's first date) holds a very special place in my heart; it felt very natural to develop my characterization of ruth, and i'm really happy with how this turned out.

also, i remain deeply honored (and, still, surprised) by all of the people who took the time to make podfics of my work this year. thank you ❤️

Do you have any fanfic/podfic goals for the new year?

finish you and i and nobody else (the twylexis bach au). make more music fics/pods with my friends. help twylexis surpass 350 fics and ruthie surpass 150. lessen my fest participation to help my sanity. write more long-form fics.

Yes! I have recommendations! Here are some of my favorites:

For live action TV shows:

If you like Skins, try the Norwegian show Skam (or one of its remakes) and the Australian show SLiDE. Both of them are a little hard to find but they're totally worth it. They're both character-focused dramas that center on the lives of high school students.

Euphoria a beautifully shot teen drama in the vein of Skins that deals with issues of mental health, gender, sex, and violence.

Pushing Daisies a mystery-of-the-week black comedy about a piemaker who raises the dead so that he can collect reward money for discovering how they died.

The Good Place is a philosophical comedy about a woman who is sent to heaven by mistake after she dies, and her quest to become a more moral person.

Ted Lasso is a comedy-drama about an American football coach who is sent to the UK to coach a professional football/soccer team. It's charming and optimistic, and is fun to watch regardless of whether or not you like football.

Gilmore Girls is a comedy-drama about the lives of a mother-daughter duo who are best friends. It's witty and whimsical.

Wandavision is a Marvel Comics mini-series about Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch living in what appears to be a TV show. I won't say too much about this show, but it's one that ends up being deeply philosophical.

Schitt's Creek a sitcom about a wealthy family who loses their money and must move to the small town of Schitt's Creek, where they live in a motel.

Community is a sitcom about a group of friends who attend a community college together and the hijinks that ensue. It's a very quirky show. that's heavy on pop-culture references and meta-humor.

Only Murders in the Building is a newer mystery-comedy show about three strangers share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one.

Westworld is a philosophical dystopian science fiction neo-Western television series about a theme park where guests can indulge their wildest fantasies using lifelike androids. It deals with questions of artificial intelligence, consciousness, ethics, and free will.

Veronica Mars is a teen neo-noir mystery-of-the-week series about a high school student who moonlights as a private investigator.

Reality TV:

Great British Bake Off is a really low-key British competition show where contestants complete three baking challenges each week in the hopes of being dubbed the best amateur baker in the UK. The contestants are genuinely really nice and helpful to one another, so it's pretty chill.

Terrace House is a reality TV show where six strangers move into a house together. It's a dating show, kind of, but it's also about people making friends and following their personal and professional aspirations. It has a group of celebrity panelists who watch the show with you and then comment on what people are doing. How real it actually is is up for debate, especially in the later seasons, but it's a fun watch nonetheless.

Queer Eye is a reality TV show where five gay men give makeovers. It's focused on representation, gay culture, and self-improvement, and has a lot of really heartwarming episodes.

Anime:

Space Dandy, a Shinichirô Watanabe space opera that follows the misadventures of Dandy, an alien bounty hunter who is “a dandy guy in space”. It's mostly a comedy, but it has some episodes that I think are actually really profound.

Cowboy Bebop (the original, not the Netflix live action remake), a Shinichirô Watanabe space western that also follows a group of alien bounty hunters, but this one is in more of a neo-noir style drama that deals with themes of existential angst, loneliness, and a person's past.

The Tatami Galaxy a parallel universe show by Masaaki Yuasa that follows the adventures of a student at Kyoto University.

Night Is Short, Walk On Girl an anime movie by Masaaki Yuasa that exists in the same world as Tatami Galaxy. It's a romantic comedy and is super life-affirming. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a dark fantasy about teenage two brothers who are alchemists searching for the philosopher's stone.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: a cyberpunk spy/thriller that follows the adventures of a law enforcement unit that investigates cybercrime and terrorism cases. This has one of my favorite episodes of TV ever, Kusanagi's Labyrinth, which I really recommend everyone watches on its own even if you don't end up watching the rest of the show.

Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! A slice of life, teen comedy that follows a group of high school girls who have an eizouken (film club). This show is a love letter to the process of making animated movies and it's so, so beautiful.

Western Animation:

Adventure Time is a surreal, coming of age, fantasy-adventure comedy-drama that follows the adventures of brothers Finn the Human and Jake the Dog in a magical, post-apocalyptic world.

Movies:

Before Sunrise is a romantic drama that follows Jesse and Celine as they meet on a Eurail train and disembark in Vienna to spend the night together.

Amelie is a whimsical romantic comedy film that follows Amelie, a shy waitress who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better while struggling with her own isolation.

Her is a science-fiction romantic drama about a man who falls in love with his artificially intelligent virtual assistant.

Anything Taika Waititi, especially Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Boy. Both are slice of life, coming of age movies. They're sentimental, whimsical, and angsty. Boy is about a young boy's life and his relationship with his ex-con father. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is about a juvenile delinquent who was abandoned by his mother and goes to live on a remote farm.

Only Lovers Left Alive is a comedy-drama film about a centuries-long romance between two vampires.

Can I send you an ask about making gifs?

What is that process like for you? do you have an idea of what you want to make? Does a specific scene pop out at you?

What tools do you use?

Oooh gifs, so fun! I am slightly nervous that my method of making gifs is "wrong" but that's dumb because they come out looking fine and they work, so why do I worry? Anyway, for ideas, I dunno? Sometimes I just like a scene or a line so much I have to make a gif of it. Other times, a parallel to another scene or another show pops into my head, and I have to gif it. (see Schitt's Creek and Ted Lasso, Schitt's Creek and Heartstopper, and Check Please and Ted Lasso)

Anyway, my tools are Quicktime for screen recording (and when I can't do that, my tool is asking my husband to find a file, ahem) and Photoshop. I have some actions I use for resizing, creating the gif, and modifying the lighting and colors.

Schitt's Creek :: Heartstopper (the first one) I mean, aside from the fact that it's gotten more notes than any other post by far? Also I love comparing Schitt's Creek to other shows.

Unbelievable The way these sync up kills me every time. (Sometimes you have to refresh a few times to make it work.)

A David Rose expression from every episode Now this was a labor of love! Seeing him change through the course of the series in tiny gifs is pretty cool.

Oh, it's just a gesture, David Maybe my favorite scene from the whole series?

Door open or closed? Ted Lasso | Schitt's Creek Parallels The giftset that launched a series. These were so fun to do!

I absolutely love making gifsets, I could list a dozen more that I had so much fun making. (Like the whole "Patrick Brewer Upside Down Smiles" series.)
