Yay, the author copy finally arrived at its destination, so I can post about this bind that I did earlier this month.

Well, first of all, this is one of my favorite fics, definitely in the top 3 of Schitt's Creek fics. The angst is top notch. It was always on my list to bind, so I'm happy to have it on my shelf now.

And, as a bonus, I included the chapters from the follow-up fic that fit in between the chapters of You Can Fall.

The cover for this is paper (with a cloth spine) and I love the freedom that gives me with the design. I laser printed heavy paper and foiled the design.

Renegade 2023 Bound Exchange: Strike Anywhere by Mad Lori

My recipient for the annual @renegadepublishing bound exchange this year was @sits-bound, which gave me the chance to explore some new Schitt's Creek fic!

Strike Anywhere by @madlori is a Schitt's Creek AU, where Patrick is a firefighter in Toronto, and David is a municipal engineer called in to consult on structural issues at fire scenes. They HATE each other on first sight, fight constantly… and inevitable end up secretly hooking up… and then secretly dating… and then secretly married, too embarrassed to admit it to their coworkers.

I had fun with the theme for this one, and used a blueprint image for the endpapers, and so many flames. So many! I'm really happy with how it turned out in the end, but there was a moment where things VERY MUCH had not gone to plan.

I like how the case turned out in particular! Too bad that I then had to cut the entire text block out of it and add sixty missing pages the day I planned to put it in the mail.

So let me set the scene. It's Dec 28. Exchange books are due in the mail Jan 1. I have spent several hours the day before finishing off stenciling the cover and spine of both books I'm sending, and am taking pictures before I package everything up. I flip to the back of the second book, and… huh. I know I formatted the AO3 metadata at the back of the book. Did I miss a page somehow?

It is then that I realize that something has gone badly wrong. On checking the typeset… my printed book ends at page 216. The typeset ends on page 277.

I got the textblock out of the case, sacrificing the endpapers, but with everything else intact. Realized that my pre-cut textblock paper was still sitting on my desk at work. Decided fuck it, I need to reprint the endpapers anyhow, and skulked in to use the big colour copier, even though I was on vacation.

The signatures fit into the case! Some funky cutting and gluing was required to take out the few duplicate pages and the blank pages from the original, make some tabs out of the edges, and glue it all in.

The mull did not come off as well as the endpapers, but it DID come off.

I cut off the sewn endbands, and the bookmark, glue everything back together, and trek back into work the next day to use the big guillotine and retrim the textblock.

The edges are re-speckled! Sewn endbands would mean forcing the needle through multiple layers of glue, and time is tight, so I made endbands out of bookcloth to match the case.

And! It! Fits! Casing in actually went better the second time.

I DID get it into the mail by the deadline, and it safely arrived in @sits-bound's hands, so now I can share the saga. I still can't believe it fit back in the case.

not the Ted Lasso book i've been waiting for but i'll spend an audible credit on it when it comes out.

i just don't think i'm quite the target audience - not particularly after critical analysis - that has been done in many many meta posts and fics and discord discussions - and not sure how much of the story remains actually untold, what with the amount of various media i have consumed in between the seasons

the Ted Lasso book (or any show/movie book, for that matter) of my dreams is a big beautifully made coffee table book chock-full of love for the show, preferably by the people who made the actual show, but not necessarily. basically give me a companion book. a printed equivalent of dvd extras, especially since we're not getting any kind of extras.

i mean, look at Schitt's Creek. look at Labyrinth. ... i ... wait, i'm going to need a minute to go hug my books. flip a few pages. watch a few scenes.

(still not sure why i got that TMITHC book but hey nobody here is getting kicked out because of my poor business decisions and non-existent impulse control)

3. Have you received any bookmark notes? Which is your favorite and why?

Absolutely! Just a few of my many faves include: the person who bookmarked fae prince Henry with the note "Alex is a peasant boy and Henry is a faerie who is very much into consent" which is both completely true and just such a hilarious summary of that fic. So, so many incredible bookmark notes on the actor AU that made me weep, and one hilarious one that said something about printing it on papyrus and handing it down to their children—I hope desperately that that person discovers ficbinding. The Schitt's Creek pole dancing/pole instructor AU has one that's like "the concept that shouldn't work as well as it does". So, so many more, probably, but those are the ones that stick out.

7. What do you love most about being a fic writer for your fandom?

I started rambling about the fic community as a whole and then I realised this question specifies "being a fic WRITER" so I'm pulling it back lol. So: I love how much depth and richness there is to the RWRB characters which gives me so much to explore as a writer. I used to be someone who really struggled writing full AUs, but I find that I have a really good sense of what makes these characters who they are and so whether I'm writing them in college, as actors, as fae princes and peasants... whatever it is, I'm still writing THEM. And that's a really lovely feeling as a writer.

8. Talk about any friends/connections you've made as a fic writer.

God where the fuck do I START. This is gonna be like an Oscars speech where I inevitably forget some really important fucking people lmao. @ships-to-sail my dream team collaborator and someone I will fight DoorDash at 3am to send soup to their house when they're sick lol. @celeritas2997 was the first person to reach out privately when I started writing RWRB—I'd only interacted with her in the comment section of my fics before that and now she's a very dear friend. @clottedcreamfudge is someone I just clicked with immediately and now talking to her bookends most days (timezones are a scam lol). I went to Disneyland and Noah Reid with @nontoxic-writes @lilythesilly @reginahalliwell a few months ago and it was AMAZING. @minerforaheartofgold we discovered very early in our shared Schitt's Creek space that Aotearoa is SMALL and there was one hell of a venn diagram overlap between our friends, and now they're someone I'll always go out of my way to see when we're in the same part of NZ (and go to Harry Styles with).

But also like... all y'all? Anyone I've ever had a back and forth with in the comments section, flailed in the reblog tags with, DMed... fandom is community, I'll bang this drum until the drum breaks, and every single one of you makes my little corner of this community better.

Went to Target for some rainbow capitalism, and while I appreciate the sentiment, all of the designs are ugly as hell. They have some rainbow stripes and checks, but something about the colors just kinda reminds me of a circus tent. They had a handful of graphic tees that I was kinda interested in, but they were the ugliest colors imaginable. Like.

Tbh this is just kinda funny. Not really making much of a statement, although voluntarily wearing "QUEER" in big letters is its own statement. What's up with the colors, though? I would rather just get some iron-on letters and make my own.

I like this one more, but I'm not buying long sleeves at the end of May. Considering getting one and immediately taking some scissors to it. It'd make a decent crop top, and "queers take care of each other" is a good message for Pride. A bit of a threat, an aspiration, a command, a reminder of community. Still wish it had better colors (how hard is it to print a proper rainbow?).

Cute, I guess, but again with the long sleeves. Also, I get what they mean, but there are definitely some things I would like to be cured of.

Another one where I'd rather just make my own with iron-on letters. Or fabric paint, maybe. WHAT is with these color choices.

Picture of the pattern itself, since it's hard to see on images of the whole shirt. And yes, this is just a bunch of stylized people in the same weird colors with random pronouns floating around. Obligatory wheelchair so we can call it inclusive, though I guess that's better than... not doing that?

It's too hard to read in photos, but they did have one shirt that was a pale pink with white cursive font reading "live laugh lesbian" that made me laugh out loud and immediately text the first lesbian I could think of. They also has some branded tank tops (gay pride means uhhhh... Schitt's Creek and Queer Eye), and the website tells me there are a bunch of drag queen shirts my store didn't have.

This Passions & Pastimes fic used my prompt!

How many fics have you written?

When did you publish your first fic on AO3?

Describe your writing process from “Oh, I have an idea” to pushing publish on AO3.

At the peak of my writing ideas, I would often fall asleep, or wake up, with full sentences formed in my mind, so I'd scurry to write them down before I'd forget them.

All my writing is done on my computer, with nothing but my own thoughts (no music or noise surrounding me). 

I can literally spend hours typing out my words and often have to stop so I can sleep and get up for my 'real job'.

I can easily spend four hours at a time writing and it was almost always linear (to my storyline). However, on occasions, words for later paragraphs manifest and I have to quickly type those out, then go back to my progressive storyline.

I edit as I go, but once my story is completely written, I reread it and make more edits. I also ensure I edit in a different format, e.g. on my tablet, or in AO3 draft, or I print my words. I often find reading it in different formats helps me weed out more errors.

I then call upon one or two of my betas to edit for me. I then re-edit my work before uploading to AO3 in draft format. I read it again in AO3 before hitting the 'publish' button. And, being in Australia, I always seem to publish before midnight so that people on the other side of the world wake up to my published fics.

Tell me about your most recent fic? What do you love about it? Is there anything you think you could have done better?

My most recent fic was a Valentine’s Day fic titled 'Love You A Whole Lot, My Pony'. It was very special to me as it included prompts from two friends I've made in this Schitt's Creek fandom. My fic was inspired by an image shared by one friend, and a video shared by the other. The two prompts did not correlate at all, but I had a very clear idea of how they'd work together in my story.

It really was a rollercoaster of emotions experienced by both David and Patrick in this fic, but I loved exploring just how much they love each other, despite their flaws and eccentricities. And it was important for me to reiterate that even though they can irritate and push each other's buttons so particularly, their deep-seated love and understanding always reigns supreme. So there's angst, and swearing, and eye rolls, but there's also tenderness, and humour, and fluff and smut. This fic also includes coding for text messages (which is one of my favourite skins to use) and some HTML links to the image and video. Plus, there's a very hot dance sequence inspired by saud video.

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about publishing their fic for the first time?

The best piece of advice is to find yourself a beta. I was sceptical at first, having someone else read and edit my words, but the insights and perspective you get from someone else can be profound. In saying this though, my next piece of advice is to remember that, in the end, your work still needs to be YOURS. So if you're not sure about an edit or idea, sit with it, mull it over, and then decide if it works for YOU.

As a beta myself, I always make it clear that these are only my opinions, and the writer needs to be sure they are comfortable publishing what THEY choose. My mantra, 'You do you'. (Thanks, Jake… and @obsessedwithdavrick​).

Most memorable comment you’ve had on one of your fics?

My most memorable comments are the ones when readers mention me nailing my characterisation of certain characters. 

Knowing that I've done a character justice, and that a reader can imagine the characters in their true form through my words, means so much to me. As does when readers tell me they found my words funny, or hot, or sweet. I love making people feel things.

What do you do when you get stuck?

I find stepping away to be the best thing for me. I'm a creative person outside of writing, and I know that if I create things when I'm not motivated, the end result is subpar. So I come back to it when I feel ready.

I think we put ourselves under so much unnecessary pressure to write, and write, and write. And why? Writing should be fun; something we do because we enjoy it. I try to remind myself, and others, that.

Who is another fic writer you admire and why?

If you could say one thing to your fellow fic writers, what would it be?

As hard as it is, try not to compare yourself to other writers. Write for you; write because it brings YOU joy, because it makes YOU feel good, because it allows YOU to live in the wonderful world of fiction.

Every writer has their own skill set, and their own challenges, and every reader has their own preferences. Just do YOU!

What’s one question you would like to ask Dan Levy about writing?

I love how Dan has mentioned that he spent so much time developing the backstories of his Schitt's Creek characters. I wonder if he does this for all the characters he writes.

part one.

kendall elliott━━privileged, socialite rich kid. no words could better describe her. born into old money, the elliott's have had their hands in far too many industries to count, making them one of the most prestigious families in new york. kendall had only ever known a life surrounded by fellow one-percenters with nothing being too good—or expensive—for the only child of the elliotts. where kids had silvers spoons, kendall had the entire cabinet all to herself.

and, fine, maybe the influence got to her head but could anyone blame her? disaffected, neglectful parents and free reign to a limitless bank account would do that to a girl. besides, what are penthouses for if not to throw parties in?

her parents had other ideas. when it came time for kendall to step into the family business(es), the family name and a hefty donation to the school landed her a spot in columbia. it all went according to plan, the degree having been printed the day she was born.

what nobody counted on was kendall failing just about every class to blow her parent's money in foreign countries and spending her time partying into the early hours. being forced to drop out in good standing was a surprising, yet inevitable decision.

locked away in in fifty-story skyscrapers only made the fall that much harder.

part two.

kendall elliott was screwed. as hard as she tried to hide it, the news spread across new york and eventually reached her parents. it didn't look good for the family image to have their heir fuck up as badly as she had.

their course of action? cut off her funds and write off the inheritance. a kid like her couldn't be tied to a family as important as them.

with what little she had left, kendall tried desperately to maintain the lifestyle and reputation as if nothing changed. nights out to michelin restaurants, vacations in europe, vintage wines and shoes all came at a cost and kendall soon found her bank account fall into the negatives.

her friends entertained her for a time, but when she stopped being able to pay back the money she had "borrowed" and outfits mysteriously went missing when she was around, they stopped returning her calls. to add insult to injury, her always devoted boyfriend had ghosted her altogether.

with nowhere else to turn, kendall mustered up what little she had and left for the one person who could help her.

part three.

aunt myrtle was always the weirder twin. kendall rarely visited her mother's sister for that very reason, but it didn't help that she lived in an empty mansion in butt-fuck nowhere, massachusetts.

aunt myrtle didn't have much in the way of a family, though. she called now and then to complain to kendall's mother and nag the young girl, but she was practically cooped up in her house all by herself.

aunt myrtle was a bitch. loaded from the family fortune, but still awful to be around. when kendall arrived unannounced and dropped her bags at the front door, aunt myrtle met her with a scowl and a backhanded compliment about her hair.

aunt myrtle had a dog—a small dog that barked, sun up to sun down. it was the only thing written in her will to receive her inheritance. with kendall now in the picture, she was going to change that.

aunt myrtle was generous. she graciously allowed kendall to stay under her roof, proud to help the niece abandoned by her parents. kendall thinks that her aunt simply likes having an emotional punching bag around. to an elliott, nothing was done out of courtesy but instead out of favours. a nagging comment for a weekly allowance. a human pooper-scooper for a guest bedroom and en suite. an unpaid secretary for use of the vintage car (otherwise hidden in the garage, collecting dust).

kendall elliott was nothing if not ambitious. a few months in nightrest and her aunt will have to write her into the will. and if that means putting up with serial killers running around town then so be it. kendall's flown coach before—she's been through so much worse.

my eyes slide from the football game on screen to them. my friends. there’s that expression on their faces again, eyes bright, smiles wide. their team is doing well, i gather. i don’t understand the game, but i yell when they do, so they will look at me and laugh. there’s the smell of biriyani cooking in the kitchen. my stomach turns, and i know i’ll suffer for it tomorrow morning, but my friends like it a lot. it’s okay if it’s for them, right?

happy. it makes them happy.

so i collect these things, these little things that bring a smile to their faces. i hold them close to my chest, like a toddler learning to grip its toys in its stubby little fingers. they hold my hands as i stumble along—i’m still learning how to live, after all. there are movies to watch, music to hear, games to play, places to visit. schitt’s creek is on the television screen. there’s an unfinished jigsaw puzzle on the coffee table, pieces scattered everywhere, looking nothing like the kittens printed on the box. there’s a body pressed against mine on the couch, and a hand in my hair. i blink away my exhaustion.

happiness seems unreal. can i hunt it down? give it a cage like a songbird and force it to make its sound? i don’t know much about being happy. but maybe, i think to myself, if i can learn to love the things my friends love, i can be happy too. maybe then, there will be something in me worth living for. when people ask me what makes me happy, all i say is them.

i suppose that’s good enough for now.

she’s something of a detective without a license in this situation. they’re a fan of murder mysteries and that’s all she’s got in terms of qualifications

Johnson “Ons” Woodrow, he/they, age 30

angelicas partner in sleuthing. i can’t figure out what to say about him. they own five rats named frank, dean, sammy, joey, and peter

Thank you for the tag, @leslie-lyman! The post was getting a bit long so I figured I’d start a new one. 

Favorite time of year: Autumn!!!!! The cooler, spooky season is almost upon on us and it’s making me feel more alive. 

Comfort food: Mac and cheese. Tea. Dark chocolate, especially with salted caramel.

Favorite dessert: Chocolate peanut butter anything.

Things you collect: Books, colored antique glass things, vintage Halloween stuff, unique art prints and sterling silver jewelry.
