Raja merupakan alumni Pondok Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah, Garut, Jawa Barat. Ia meraih gelar sarjana Ilmu Al-Qur’an dan Tafsir dari IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah (UIN Jakarta) pada tahun 2001 dengan skripsi berjudul Ayat-ayat Jihad: Studi Kritis terhadap Penafsiran Jihad sebagai Perang Suci. Ia kemudian menempuh pendidikan master di The Department of Peace Studies, Universitas Bradford, Inggris, setelah mendapatkan beasiswa Chevening Award pada tahun 2004, dan menyelesaikannya dengan tesis yang berjudul The Conflict in Aceh: Searching for A Peaceful Conflict Resolution Process. Dengan beasiswa dari Australian Development Scholarhip (ADS) pada tahun 2010, Raja meneruskan studi doktoral di School of Political Science and International Studies pada Universitas Queensland, Australia. Ia berhasil mendapatkan gelar Ph.D dengan disertasi berjudul Religious Peacebuilders: The Role of Religion in Peacebuilding in Conflict Torn Society in Southeast Asia, dengan mengambil studi kasus Mindanao (Filipina Selatan) dan Maluku (Indonesia).

Mantan Ketua Umum Pengurus Pusat Ikatan Pelajar Muhammadiyah (PP IPM) periode 2000–2005 ini juga pernah dipercaya sebagai Direktur Eksekutif Maarif Institute yang didirikan mantan Ketua Umum PP Muhammadiyah, Ahmad Syafii Maarif. Pada tahun 2009, Ia sempat menjadi calon anggota legislatif untuk Pemilihan Umum Legislatif 2009 dari Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDIP) untuk Daerah Pemilihan Jawa Barat IX (Kabupaten Subang, Sumedang, dan Majalengka). Akan tetapi, Ia belum terpilih karena kurang suara dengan Maruarar Sirait serta Tb. Hasanuddin (caleg terpilih PDIP dapil Jabar IX). Ia sempat menjadi calon Ketua Umum PP Muhammadiyah periode 2015–2020, tetapi kemudian mengundurkan diri karena ingin berkonsentrasi sebagai Sekretaris Jenderal Partai Solidaritas Indonesia (PSI) yang baru didirikannya bersama beberapa politikus muda lainnya.

The amount of times I make an original post that is coherent is low, so yeah. But I’m hitting up a scholarship here.

As y’all have probably guessed at some point, I’m in college now. I think I started on tumblr in high school? Middle school? Yikes... It was middle school. Whatever. Y’all definitely know I’m genderfluid as hell. And transitioning to look more masculine than I was born as (I think I complained about the issues I had getting my testosterone on here, but I don’t remember). So, as rarely as I use it, I am in fact transgender.

And living in the US as a trans person sucks. It just does. I’ll admit, it sucks a little less for me than it does for others, I got into the all gender housing, my mom’s accepting and helped me change my name, I’m on hormones. But still. I’m required to fill out every form as ‘Female’. My roommate still has to go by their birth name for anything housing related, because the Office of Residence Life isn’t being nearly as accepting as the rest of the university, which I’ll get into a little more below because I work for them. No matter how masculine or androgynous I appear, I still get misgendered every day.

Now, the Office of Residence Life (or as the cool kids call it, Rez Life)? Yeah, they should step up their game alright. I work as a desk clerk, lets start there. I’m probably going to get fired soon, especially if they find this post. So yeah, I messed up a few times. Was late to two shifts, and missed two unexcused. But they didn’t put anybody else who did that on probation. Much less probation through next semester. My supervisor told me that they didn’t give him a choice either and he fought against it.

They also don’t give the option of showing a preferred name in the system we use to check out equipment. So, if somebody who’s transgender comes up and needs a vacuum, but hasn’t started the long and exhausting process of changing their name? They literally have to recite their birth name to me and if I don’t know their preferred name (because we live in All gender together)? I just call them by it.

Pretty much the rest of the university has found a way to be more inclusive, but when one of my coworkers suggested Rez Life attempt it? They were shot down.
