Story idea/writing prompt:
You & other monstrous races live in mostly relative harmony separated from your main prey, the humans. It is the first day of this school year and you & your classmates are all confused & appalled that your school would even allow a human to enroll here. Your teacher tells all of you that many monster races have decided to ally with humanity though it is still a work in progress. Maybe you should've paid more attention to the news. Anyway, this still doesn't make sense to you. "Humans are prey. Why is this one here? Humans aren't monsters like us," you & your classmates shout. Your teacher just.. chuckles at that. Your human classmate, too. What??? "Well then. It seems that we have a LOT to learn this year," your teacher says with a wide grin.

poisoned ivy vampire au- either nate or bryce is a secret vampire, your pick :)
masterlist
tw vampire whumper, school setting, manipulation, gaslighting
Nate felt like he was going insane. How else would anyone explain the fact that he thought most-popular-guy Bryce Donnelley was... a vampire?
It made no sense. Bryce was clearly not very affected by sunlight, as evidenced by the fact that he attended a normal college. Well, they did have a lot of cloudy days... but Bryce was out and about even on the sunny ones, right? Sort of. He did cover up more than his 'frat bros', something that was a topic of constant lamentation among the women. But he wasn't burning. 'I get sunburnt super easily,' he'd overheard him say once.
Bryce also didn't have anything going on with his eyes. Vampires were supposed to have glowy red eyes, right? Well, his were a dark brown, as human as it could get. Normally. Sometimes, when the light hit him just right, Nate swore he could see a hint of red in them, but it always passed as quickly as it showed up.
He wasn't very proud of this one, but he had even gotten some garlic bread one time just to offer some to Bryce. He'd smiled and said he was allergic, not to mention his date with Cindy later that day. It would've been a gotcha moment– if only Bryce had kept it up.
"I'm joking, I'm joking. Thought I'd lean into the vampire thing." He grabbed one and took a bite, laughing when Nate's eyes widened. "What, don't tell me you believe that too? Is that why you thought to bring me some?"
It was embarrassing. Mortifying. Bryce made him feel like a stupid teenage girl. But there was something there, he knew it, he just had to dig a little deeper.
When they were put together as a pair for a class project, Nate thought it was the perfect opportunity to see whether Bryce could enter his dorm without an invitation. He purposely danced around the subject, all the way until they got there.
"Nice of you to invite me over. My room is a bit of a mess."
"I never invited you!" he said a bit too quickly, and Bryce feigned confusion. "I, I mean– I never invited you in– I mean..."
"I thought that was the entire reason you brought me here?"
"I... y-yeah, I just meant..."
"If you don't want me to come in, I get that–"
"No, no, come in, I'm sorry– wait–"
Bryce grinned at him, stepping over the threshold with ease. "Thanks."
Nate wanted to pull his hair out. He even dug up his old crucifix, the one he'd received as a gift from his grandmother, and then accidentally dropped it in a way so that it touched Bryce's skin. Bryce hissed in pain and pulled away– then laughed at Nate's reaction and told him it was just a joke. He'd grabbed the crucifix to hand it back to him to prove it.
There was never any conclusive evidence. Nothing to latch onto. But he just couldn't leave it alone.
He devised a plan that some might call obsessive, or even stalkerish. He was going to follow Bryce around for a whole day, make sure he didn't drink anyone's blood (he was normal, he swore, this was a totally normal thing to think about his peers), then slightly nick his finger and see how Bryce reacted. If this didn't bring any results, he would stop for good.
The day passed agonisingly slowly. He tried not to look too creepy, nor too startled whenever Bryce looked at him and they locked eyes. Bryce knew what he was after, probably, and he looked very smug about having Nate so hooked. But he didn't know about the plan. He couldn't.
Bryce ate only solids the whole day. Sandwiches, the cafeteria food, chocolate. No blood.
"Do you want to work on the project tonight?" he asked after Bryce's last class, and he could've exploded when he responded with an easy 'yeah, sure'. He was supposed to be a little agitated by now. Restless. It had been a long day, and now Nate was proposing they spend several more hours together. But Bryce never ever wavered.
It was well past midnight when they finished up. Bryce yawned, hand in front of his mouth either because he was very polite or because he was hiding a set of fangs. Nate didn't even care anymore which one it was, he just wanted to know for sure.
"I'm gonna get back to my room," Bryce said with a smile. "See you tomorrow?"
"Sure."
As soon as Bryce turned to leave, he cut his finger with a blade he had wrestled out of his pencil sharpener. Blood bubbled to the surface instantly, and a split second later he was slammed against the wall of his room, staring up into Bryce's bright red eyes.
"Holy shit," he breathed, just now realising that goading a vampire into attacking him wasn't the best plan of action. Truth be told, he didn't think he'd get this far.
Bryce blinked a couple times, and his eyes went right back to normal. "Oh. I can't play that off as a joke, can I?"
"You're a vampire."
"Yeah."
Nate swallowed hard, suddenly very unsure of what to say. "Are you going to hurt me?"
"I should, shouldn't I? You found out about it after all. I can't be sure you won't tell everyone."
"Nobody would believe me!" he said hastily. "I– I just needed to know. I won't tell. I won't tell anyone. Please."
"And then there's the fact that you starved me alllll fucking day. I'm pretty hungry, you know."
"Please don't hurt me," he whimpered.
"Oh, it won't hurt."
Nate yelped when Bryce yanked his head to the side, clearly having made up his mind. His heart was pounding, and he distantly wondered whether that'd make it quicker. Higher pulse, faster bloodflow, less time with fangs in his neck–
His mind went blank when Bryce bit down. It was a strange, fuzzy feeling. He didn't feel anxious about it anymore. In fact, it was almost... pleasant. Natural. Right. He was grateful that Bryce was holding him up, because he was sure his knees would've buckled underneath him otherwise.
"You taste nice," he whispered after he was done, and Nate hummed in acknowledgment. He tasted nice... "And you obviously react very well to the venom, hm?" He pulled back and gently knocked on his head. "Anything left in there?"
Nate couldn't find the words to react. He just stared up at him through half-lidded eyes, noting that the blood on his lips must've been his own.
"I was in need of a permanent meal, and I had no idea who to even target... But I guess you just solved that issue, Detective Fane."

Writing Tips: The School Setting
The school setting trope is a narrative device that places the story's events within an educational institution. This trope capitalizes on the nostalgia of school life, leveraging the structured environment to explore a variety of themes, character dynamics, and conflicts.
Pros:
Familiarity: Readers easily grasp the setting, streamlining the introduction of complex plots.
Diverse Characters: Abundance of character types, from supportive friends to minor/major bullies to wizened mentors.
Natural Conflicts: Built-in elements like coming-of-age growth, exams, social dynamics, and extracurricular activities provide ample conflict.
Cons:
Formulaic: Due to the commonality of this setting, there's a potential for the narrative to become predictable.
Classroom Limitations: Often, the most interesting events occur outside the classroom during field trips or special events.
Contrived Stakes: The school, being a structured and safe environment, may struggle to convey a real sense of danger to the students.
Common School Tropes:
Late!: Scenarios involving characters running late.
Group Project: The teamwork and exploration of relationships through collaborative challenges.
Social Conformity: Exploring themes of individuality versus societal norms.
Prom Night: The buildup to and climax of a social event such as prom, as a backdrop for drama.
Academic Struggles: Plot points related to bad grades and their consequences.
Bullies: Delving into the complexities of bullying, from both students and teachers.
Sports and Games: The buildup to and climax of high-stakes events, as a backdrop for drama.
Vacation Time: Navigating challenges and relationships during vacation periods.
Detention: The conflicts and breaking of rules, leading up to detention.
Field Trips: Exploring the wider world and lore, while encountering conflict.
Tests: Showcasing the skill and growth of characters, while tackling the anxiety surrounding tests.
Social Structures: Examining the dynamics of school groups and hierarchies.
Graduation: Feel-good denouement, when the characters celebrate their successes and reflect on their journey together
Types of Bullies:
Goons: Unpleasant, hostile characters functioning as easy obstacles, typically following a Bigger Badder Bully.
Reasonable Bullies: Characters with legitimate reasons for their dislike of the protagonist, such as family rivalries or personal ambitions.
Villainous Bullies: Truly evil individuals collaborating with external threats or evil organizations for nefarious purposes.
Magic School Subgenre:
Adventure Within the Walls: The school itself becomes the focal point of the adventure.
Specialization in the Supercool: Schools where the subjects are about magic, monsters, superheroes, or even robots.
Wish Fulfillment: The reader is projected into a world beyond the mundane.
Trials and Tests: Incorporating trials, duels, and fights as rites of passage.
Secrecy and Intrigue: The school and its knowledge are usually secluded and hidden from the world.
Building an Alliance: The protagonist has to win over a diverse cast of characters to aid them in their fight against a great threat.
Rival from Nobility: One of the main antagonists is usually a scion of a high-status, wealthy family.
Outside Threat: The school is usually a focal point for a greater conflict taking place in the wider world. And comes under attack later in the story.
Outside Adventures: Characters sometimes leave the safety of the school for adventures in the wider world.

Spy x Family
Story by Tatsuya Endo
Manga Volume 5
Shonen, School Setting, Action, Adventure, Found Family, Comedy
Story   ★★★★☆   ||   ★★★☆☆   Art
Summary
Anya Forger has been trying her best to befriend Damian Desmond, the son of the powerful Ostanian political leader Donovan Desmond, but her attempts have been constantly rebuffed. Despite the setbacks, Anya is determined to gain access to the Desmonds’ inner circle and even devises a new plan—acing her midterm exams to earn stella stars! Can the academically challenged Anya pull off this feat for the sake of world peace?
Review
Yor is trying to learn to cook from Camilla and it isn’t going well, until Camilla gets the idea to make something Yor’s parents might have made, and is able to help Yor cook her mom’s stew... and it actually tastes good!
Anya continues to try and make Plan B work, this time by trying to help Damian with an art project, but Anya being Anya - she just causes more trouble. Damian calls home and talk to Jeeves, the butler, and we learn more about how distant his relationship with his father is and why he is so motivated to do well.
Anya is struggling in school, her test scores are terrible. We learn that Anya has a weakness, her powers do not work when the moon is new (barely there). Yuri comes over to tutor Anya, and after a few antics he gets frustrated by Anya’s lack of progress. Anya does try, the mid-term exams are coming up and a failing grade equals a tonitrus bolt.
The spy Daylight makes his first appearence to mess with the Desmond test scores, Twilght also there to check on Anya’s results has to deal with his crazy antics and fix all of his mistakes.
Damian does well enough on an exam to earn his first Stella.  Anya manages to (barely) not fail any of her tests, a huge win in her book! (213 / 228) Is below 30 a failing grade? When I was in school, below 70 was a failing grade, so a 30 looks like failure to me, what are their standards? I mean shouldn’t it at least be over 50, at least your got half of the material! I don’t understand the grading rules here. lol
Glooman Pharmaceuticals is in financial trouble, and young George, a classmate of Anya and Damian, blames the Desmond group and wants to hurt Damian to get even. When the other kids learn about George’s misfortune, they try and help his last day be a good one. Ends up he got it all wrong.
Anya’s is given a project to learn about one of her parent’s jobs and write a report on it. Anya considers Yor, but Yor’s thoughts leave Anya to ask Loid instead, so she spends the day at Berlint General Hospital.
Fiona Frost (Nightfall) is introduced in this volume, she is a spy operative that works with Twilight, but was away on a mission so wasn’t available to play the role of ‘wife’ in the STRIX assignment. Fiona doesn’t like that Yor is part of the mission and wants to drive her away and take her place... but not for the good of the mission, but because she is in love with Twilight. Fiona’s appearence does indeed shake Yor’s confidence about their ‘fake’ relationship.

Operation : True Love
Plot : 9/10
Artwork : 10/10
Status : Ongoing
Author : kkokkalee
Artist : Deuldeom
Genre : School, sci fi, romance, mystery, slow burn
Alternative title : Pure Love Operation
Verdict : Don’t miss it!
Surprisingly engaging school romance with a scifi twist. The character are clueless about their feelings at times, but given their young age, very understandable. Small seemingly (as it is still ongoing) plot holes, but may be explained well later on. There is an element of mystery, the romance is slow burn. It seems that there will be two main leads for the female lead and heading towards a love triangle.

Bought my uncle a burger and milkshake in exchange for letting me disrupt the holiest day of the week, NFL Sunday Football, so I could install a Pi-hole and free the household of ads...the thing abt the specific boomers I live with is they told me not to trust people on the Internet but they do not understand the algorithm or online advertising and think that Facebook has their best interests at heart. And every time I have tried to explain to them that no, blorbo from my dashboard is not selling my kidneys on the dark web but Google from your capitalism is definitely selling your web searches to every advertising company on the planet, they think I am paranoid. How could their personal friend Mark Zuckerberg want anything bad to happen to them etc. I am fighting battles I did not know existed!!!

this got VERY long, putting it under a cut. but this is the New Project talk
tw blackmail, ""a prank"" (it's not funny, it's cruel), school setting, manipulation, bullying (kind of but not really yet, it's also not a whole group doing it)
Personal notes. This is a story where I will absolutely not lean into realism, not even as much as my other stories. Both because I'm not from the US, I don't have any experience with fraternities, I'm basically coasting by on stuff my US based friends tell me about the education system (but I'm not stressing much about getting it all accurate lmao), I've never studied at an ivy league college (clearly), AND ALSO, MOST IMPORTANTLY, school bullying is a trigger of mine. So if this gets too realistic, I'll end up hurting myself mentally.
Regardless, this is a concept I'd like to explore anyway, and this comes with restrictions. Obviously, there's a bunch of potential when a frat house is involved, right. Like hazing. There'll be none of that here because hazing is like one of my biggest mental no-no's. Any sort of school-based GROUP bullying is off the table (so like, big groups of people ganging up on one person, or even multiple people, or bullying in front of a huge crowd), so keep that in mind as you read, so you won't be disappointed by multiple "missed opportunities". I also won't go into detail on how the blackmail went. It'll mostly be implied.
So now you might be asking, what's it about then? The main focus of this story is one pathetic little guy getting blackmailed and manipulated and eventually kidnapped by another guy. So it's basically just power dynamics, humiliation and hidden in plain sight - aka all the stuff you can read about in my other stories, but this time on a college campus, dressed in preppy clothes.
And the reason I'm writing this long-winded notes section is just to say... please be patient with me. You might think it's dumb that I want to write a story that borders on triggering. But if I'm the one writing, I can explore all the elements I want to, while strategically avoiding my squicks and triggers. It's also to say that if you send prompts for the story, or questions about some of the events, please keep in mind that there's a bigger than usual chance that the reply will be "sorry, I can't do that/sorry, I can't go into more detail". It's absolutely not your responsibility to keep track of my sometimes very unpredictable triggers, so don't stress over sending the ask in the first place! Just be aware that I might not be able to answer it. Thank you for reading this part.
Also if you find preppy clothes and dark academia cringey- I don't accept criticism. Cringe is dead. I want my men dressed like 1940's Yale students. Refer to my post about wanting to tear apart men in tweed if you have any further questions. /j
ACTUAL STORY TALK STARTS HERE
SO the premise of this thing I'm doing. I'll share my blorbo notes too, in just a second. But the setting is just this ivy league school where everyone is very smart, very cool, very rich, whatever. And here's the message that inspired the "plot" (I have no idea about actual plot, it might never have actual plot, it might just be a series of hot guy bullying nerdy little guy drabbles) (shoutout to @whumpsday):
Tumblr media
What I changed so far is the fact that it's not an outright kidnapping as mentioned here, but a blackmail situation where whumpee can then see his marks falling, and face the humiliation of constantly being berated by professors who don't understand what's going on. And then it just escalates and gets progressively worse and worse, because no one's stepping in, so why should whumper hold back at all?
And I'm naming the story Poisoned Ivy because I'm very funny and witty. Picrew I used for the boys
Bryce Donnelley
Tumblr media
Second smartest guy on campus. President of his frat house. Student council treasurer. 20 years old when he decides he’s had enough of being second. He asks a sorority sister friend of his to help ‘prank’ Nate, and eventually gets his hands on some compromising enough material that he feels comfortable starting his blackmail plan. It’s perfect, really; now he can just focus on being cool and friendly, partying throughout the week, while Nate sits in his dorm and does his work for him. Better than his own, of course <3
Bryce is the popular kid. The one with all the friends, all the academic achievements, all the sports trophies. But at the same time, he somehow also manages to be laid back and casual about it. No one ever really sees him study, but he’s there for every single party, with a devilish alcohol tolerance. He’s notorious for making bets with others, and somehow always winning. He’s on good terms with all the teachers, always promising to put in a little more effort, so he could live up to his ‘full potential’.
He’s not overt about his need for control and dominance. In fact, he’s a very friendly guy! Always cheery and nice, pleasant to talk to, happy to help newcomers and those who are struggling with college life. Even though he’s so good at everything, somehow he stays grounded and humble, and you’d never ever see him bully anyone. Hell, he stands up to the bullies! There’s really no reason to dislike him. He’s very sorry if you find his fraternity brothers obnoxious, he’s trying to reign them in <3
Opinion on Nate: Cute little nerd boy. I wish I could just drag him to a party myself and get him just a little drunk <3 It’d be good for him! He might even make some friends for once in his life. As for the rankings, no, it doesn’t really bother me that he writes better papers and stuff. He’s clearly putting in a lot of effort, it’s admirable :)
Nathaniel Fane
Tumblr media
Smartest guy on campus. Avoids frat bros like the plague, given he’s a stereotypical nerd boy, just waiting to be fucking bullied. 20 years old when he gets a suspicious message from one of the prettiest and most popular girls. He has no one to tell him that it’s probably a prank, and his parents are encouraging him to finally go out with a girl, especially if the opportunity just arose like that. Why wouldn’t girls be interested in a driven and hard-working guy like him? So he gives in, and his life suddenly falls apart.
Nate is the resident smart guy. People don’t avoid him on purpose because of nerd reasons, it’s more the other way around. He feels too awkward to socialise much. He actually gets invited to parties sometimes, but he has never once turned up to one. He’s kind of a teacher’s pet, stemming from the fact that he basically has no other friends aside from the professors who tell him he’s doing a good job.
He honestly just wants the college experience, but he feels like it’s way too late now. Everyone belongs to a clique now, everyone has their established group of friends, and he’s missed out on too much to try and fit in now. Still, people are friendly towards him, and he’s kind of friendly towards them. Because of his anxiety, he does come off stand-offish and stuck-up sometimes. Even more than that, he does feel like he’s above all this sometimes. Even if it’s just a defence mechanism for loneliness, it bleeds through in his explanations when someone asks him for help. That’s why most people actually go to Bryce. He may only be second best according to the numbers, but he’s sure as hell not subtly condescending the entire time.
Opinion on Bryce: President of the most obnoxious frat house. I can’t imagine how much energy it takes for him to restrain himself outside of it, and to appear even semi-normal. I will never accept an invitation from him until the day that I die. No, I’m not jealous of how many friends he has and how popular he is, and I’m not studying this much just so I can have this one thing I’m better at.

Spy x Family
Story by Tatsuya Endo
Manga Volume 2
Shonen, School Setting, Action, Adventure, Found Family
Story   ★★★★☆   ||   ★★★☆☆   Art
Summary
Twilight must infiltrate the prestigious Eden Academy to get close to his target Donovan Desmond, but has he ruined his daughter Anya’s chances with his outburst during the admissions interview? Perhaps the truly impossible mission this time is making sure Anya both becomes an exemplary student and befriends Donovan’s arrogant son Damian!
Review
Tumblr media
Well, Anya makes it into the prestigious Eden Academy. We have a little celebration with a little reward for Anya.  Honestly the anime adapted this to be more entertaining, flushed it out more and uped the production. The manga version is probably more realistic though and the setup is much simpler.
Anya gets her new school uniform, and we learn more about what the actual goals of the mission are and what Anya will need to accomplish. Some punks try and kidnap/random Anya for some quick cash and of course Yor quickly rescues her prompting Anya to ask her to teach her to defend herself too. Yor teaches Anya a few moves and tips.
She attends orientation and we meet some more important characters like Anya’s future best friend Becky and her mission target, Damian - who she starts off on the wrong foot, gets harassed by him and his friends and Anya loses her temper and hits becoming ‘enemies’ with Damian.

A general tip for students who are sending those dreaded Religious Absence Emails to your professors: Rather than asking permission to take the day(s) off, politely let them know that you will be taking the day(s) off.
In other words, consider not saying this:
"May I miss class on [date] so I can observe [holiday]?"
It's not that there's anything wrong with the above, per se. But because it's phrased as a request, it risks coming across as optional — a favor you hope to be granted. Problem is, favors are not owed, and so unfortunately asking permission opens the door for the professor to respond "Thanks for asking. No, you may not. :)"
Instead, try something along the lines of:
"I will need to miss class on [date] because I will be observing [holiday]. I wanted to let you know of this conflict now, and to ask your assistance in making arrangements for making up whatever material I may miss as a result of this absence."
This is pretty formal language (naturally, you can and should tweak it to sound more like your voice). But the important piece is that, while still being respectful, it shifts the focus of the discussion so that the question becomes not "Is it okay for me to observe my religion?", but rather, "How can we best accommodate my observance?"
Because the first question should not be up for debate: freedom of religion is a right, not a favor. And the second question is the subject you need to discuss.
(Ideally, do this after you've looked up your school's policy on religious absences, so you know what you're working within and that religious discrimination is illegal. Just in case your professor forgot.)
