« To mention the global loss of biodiversity, that is to say, the disappearance of life on our planet, as one of our problems, along with air pollution or ocean acidification, is absurd—like a doctor listing the death of his patient as one symptom among others.
The ecological catastrophe cannot be reduced to the climate crisis. We must think about the disappearance of life in a global way. About two-thirds of insects, wild mammals and trees disappeared in a few years, a few decades and a few millennia, respectively. This mass extinction is not mainly caused by rising temperatures, but by the devastation of natural habitats.
Suppose we managed to invent clean and unlimited energy. This technological feat would be feted by the vast majority of scientists, synonymous in their eyes with a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions. In my opinion, it would lead to an even worse disaster. I am deeply convinced that, given the current state of our appetites and values, this energy would be used to intensify our gigantic project of systemic destruction of planetary life. Isn't that what we've set out to do—replace forests with supermarket parking lots, turn the planet into a landfill? What if, to cap it all, energy was free?
[...C]limate change has emerged as our most important ecological battle [...] because it is one that can perpetuate the delusional idea that we are faced with an engineering problem, in need of technological solutions. At the heart of current political and economic thought lies the idea that an ideal world would be a world in which we could continue to live in the same way, with fewer negative externalities. This is insane on several levels. Firstly because it is impossible. We can't have infinite growth in a finite world. We won't. But also, and more importantly, it is not desirable. Even if it were sustainable, the reality we construct is hell. [...]
It is often said that our Western world is desacralised. In reality, our civilisation treats the technosphere with almost devout reverence. And that's worse. We perceive the totality of reality through the prism of a hegemonic science, convinced that it “says” the only truth.
The problem is that technology is based on a very strange principle, so deeply ingrained in us that it remains unexpressed: no brakes are acceptable, what can be done must be done. We don't even bother to seriously and collectively debate the advisability of such "advances". We are under a spell. And we are avoiding the essential question: is this world in the making, standardised and computed, overbuilt and predictable, stripped of stars and birds, desirable?
To confine science to the search for "solutions" so we can continue down the same path is to lack both imagination and ambition. Because the “problem” we face doesn't seem to me, at this point, to be understood. No hope is possible if we don't start by questioning our assumptions, our values, our appetites, our symbols... [...] Let's stop pretending that the numerous and diverse human societies that have populated this planet did not exist. Certainly, some of them have taken the wrong route. But ours is the first to forge ahead towards guaranteed failure. »
— Aurélien Barrau, particle physicist and philosopher, in an interview in Télérama about his book L'Hypothèse K

the thing about academic literature is that sometimes incredibly complex hyperspecific terminology and phrasing really is the best, clearest, most efficient way to communicate a concept while minimizing nuance and potential for misinterpretation. tbh it drives me up the wall when people take that personally and misconstrue it as elitism and deliberate obfuscation when the goal is to be as objective as possible in such an inherently subjective medium as written language. obvs some authors take it to an extreme— pretty common disclaimer for humans in general— but the rule of thumb is if you can choose between a common word or phrase that kinda matches the thing you need to say and has a variety of colloquial meanings, and a niche word that has exactly one definition, you should pick the niche one every time.
the other thing is that most academic literature is aimed at other academics, because that's who it's most vital and time-sensitive to reach with the info. entry-level science communication geared toward the layperson should not be expected from interacademic communication and scientific journals, the same way you wouldn't tell two ESL spanish-speaking people to speak english when chatting privately in their own home.
on top of all that, i think people criminally undervalue teachers and public speakers. "simple english" is deceptive; it's an entirely separate skill (and honestly an art form) to rephrase something complex into simpler terms, even if you know the actual concept front to back. asking someone who deals almost exclusively in academic vernacular to suddenly try and write in simple english for a layperson is an extremely tall order and devalues both the work they put into developing that academic-language mindset and the equally impressive work of educators who actually are able to perform that translation work and regularly do so as a career

@strangersteddierthings this is for you. (There will be more, but I have stuff to do for Environmental Science homework, and need to post something about it, so that I can’t decide to give up abandon this—so I guess this is part 1/???)
Honestly, Eddie wasn’t sure where he went wrong. One minute, he was sitting with Steve, watching some movie that Steve had been far too excited to show him, and then next minute he was walking home. Alone.
It had been his fault, really, and he knew it.
He had kissed Steve Harrington. He had kissed Steve Harrington. What the actual fuck had he done?
There was something in him that jumped at the chance to make a real move once Steve had said he also liked men, and something in him that wanted to curl up and die on the spot because that just made this whole situation worse. Because he liked guys, but he didn’t like Eddie, and that was all too apparent when Steve’s face went from nervous to startled, frozen in place as Eddie instantly regretted everything.
“Is this a joke to you?” Steve had whispered, his voice sounding broken, tears in his eyes as he stood up and looked over at Eddie, arms crossed over chest like he was trying to hide himself—slumped over like he wanted to disappear.
“Steve—“
“I—I’m being serious! I mean it, Eddie…do—do you know how hard this is to say? How much it hurts to admit?” Steve shook his head slightly, his eyebrows pinched together, and Eddie wanted to explain everything, but he couldn’t. He was stuck, frozen in place on the couch, wanting so badly to tell Steve what he meant—what he wanted.
But he was walking home alone. The air was cold, and it felt even colder since he had left in a hurry, excusing himself before Steve would’ve started crying, because it hurt to see him like that, so scared and devastated—like he thought Eddie was going to tell everyone. And he wasn’t. Of course he wasn’t! He would never do that—but Steve didn’t know that.
So he had left his coat, only in a t-shirt and jeans.
He was going to have to go back and get it eventually. He knew that. But he didn’t want to face Steve—to have to admit why he did what he had, and how it wasn’t a joke to him—it was never a joke. It was just easier to ignore him than to face the truth and have to tell him.
The one thing nobody ever talked about enough was how painful feelings could be.
EDIT: there are more parts, and it is finished (maybe I don’t know if I’ll expand on this in the future)! part 2, part 3, part 4

Yandere Teachers!!! (who are also freaks)
Sirris
Sirris is the cool teacherTM but that's only because he's hiding the fact that he's a freak from everyone.
he's got a regular hook-up with some random once a month he pays them to film them having sex for his sex ed classes. But since he's met you he's stopped that. Now he only wants to make amateur porn with one person now and he's going to do it one way or another
Will drug you. Says it's for pain but he's just a big fan of seeing you drooling with your eyes rolled back.
Tones of pictures. Never of your face. He doesn't want any evidence against him.
Very adamant that your relationship (if you can call it that) stays hidden. Never even touches you on school property.
Would absolutely fist-fight Leighton in the parking lot if he found out about anything that freak does to you.
Very adamant that you and Sydney get along. If you don't get along he's first going to try and convince Sydney to change to fit you better and if that doesn't work he's going to force you to change to get along with Sydney.
Obsessed with ass. I can't explain it.
Very clean.
✦•····················································•✦•···················································•✦
Mason
Mason is pretty gentle and because of that, he's not too forward with you.
it's a lot of staring though. Like to much
At school, he's very interested in only school topics. But at the lake, he's more interested in talking to you.
Man loves his exercise and wants you to do it too. Wants to keep you healthy.
Mans is a big puppy.
He will try and get his scent onto you, especially after swimming lessons.
He refrains from touching you a lot because even the feeling of you is enough to get him going.
Absolutely will fuck you at the lake and nowhere else. it's where he feels the most safe
Mason’s fucking is always very rough and brutal. You covered in marks bites scratches and hickeys
Will take you for coffee afterward and apologize for being too rough. He just gets carried away too easily.
✦•····················································•✦•···················································•✦
River
Dude has no boundaries when he comes to terms that he's obsessed with you.
He finally has the guts to get Whitney suspended when he sees the bully's hands on you. It wasn't easy but he did it.
Still believes in using a ruler as punishment but quickly stops when you moan.
Chasity belt chafes his dick every time it gets too close to him.
He never wants to defile you. Wants to believe that you are a precious little virgin that has never touched anyone.
he's happy when you show up to help at the soup kitchen. But now he has to protect you here as well.
Will hit other staff with anything he's got close by if he catches them staring.
No one dares hit him back when he's doing the same thing.
Man is so pent-up. Even god is placing bets on when he's going to ditch his vow to wreck you.
Winter
Very old-fashioned. Wants a traditional wife/spouse to dote on and care for. Thinks you are the perfect person for that life no matter what you are actually like.
Constantly keeping you after class. He keeps telling you that your grades are slipping no matter how hard you try you can't seem to fix it.
Absolutely offers a “favors” for “favors” deal.
Even if you refuse you getting bent over his desk and fucked. Dude is like a man possessed and then when he's done he kicks you out.
This can happen several days a week he's started putting up a “back in 20” sign up when you walk in.
Sadistic streek.
Loves having you visit the museum. There's always something new for you to try out.
Big bondage fan. Adores what you look like in ropes. The pillory. Ect. basically, whenever you're helpless he gets stupid hard.
he's gonna fuck you in all of his little replica contraptions. don't fight it.
If you do though get ready for him to literally whip you.
✦•····················································•✦•···················································•✦
Doren (Written by @degrees-of-fuck please give them lots of love they were very nice to help me with this!!!)
Big Warped Protectiveness vibes I think, paired with a short fuse and a tendency to go a bit fuckoff wild when the line is crossed. Doren’s like this at the best of times but Yandoren is gonna need to be held back from all these assault charges calling for him.
Wants you to like and trust him!! He has your best interests at heart! He’ll keep you safe from this world! And also maybe enable you a little. I don’t think he quite consciously puts together what he’s doing when he as your teacher is positioning himself as your friendly protector who always has space for you in his home for these reasons. It’s fine when he does it because he’s not a bad person and he doesn’t want to hurt you! Not grooming, nuh-uh. Regardless, I think he’d prefer it if any involvement between the two of you had technically been your idea…
Yandoren Could maaaaaybe be tempted to spend just a little more time at home by you visiting him often enough, but I mostly imagine him coming up with excuses to invite you along to… Whatever it is he does, when it’s possible - so he doesn’t have to worry about what could be happening to you out there or about you showing up to class covered in others’ fluids again.
If yall fuckin, you NEED to be like, physically ‘on top’ or your ass is getting SMOTHERED.
Goes the fuck off on roleplaying and dirty talk probably. Let him have his sex soliloquy he NEEDS IT. I’m not sure it can be prevented.
I have an image in my head of him doing a soliloquy that gets increasingly frantic before he just fucking goes apeshit on you. IS he a werewolf? I dunno. But it’s times like this when the rumor comes to mind.
Tight protective bear hugs, that can get GENUINELY QUITE PAINFUL depending on his mood.
I have an image of him fucking prowling the schoolyard to keep an eye on you. Freak.
This story probably ends with him getting done for assault or manslaughter ngl. Maybe you can go on the lam together. Romantic! :)))

August 7th was a big day for me. Finally. After 5 years of participating in fieldworks, I found a skeleton of a theropod!
Well, this is actually not a full skeleton, but! For all the years of research on the Shestakovo location since 1953, only single bones of various theropods have been found here. And in general, all previously found here articulated skeletons belong only to psittacosaurs... So... this is really something new.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The wet sandstone was very brittle and crumbled at the touch of fingers exposing the fossil.
However, finding something is only half the case. You have to take it with you somehow and not break it. The fossil was encased in a single piece of sandstone weighing at least a third of a ton, lying on the bank of the Kiya River and half submerged in water. A high sheer cliff overhangs the shore, and the surface below is littered with cobblestones, on which no one truck can pass. The only way to take the fossil is to float it down to the gentle shore.
Tumblr media
But there was a small problem... We had no boat or something. Fortunately, a local resident agreed to transport the block with the fossil on his own rubber boat. This was a small two-person rubber boat that can barely withstand the weight of the rock block. In addition, it turned out that the tightness of the air chamber of the boat is broken, so it needed to be continuously pumped up, otherwise the boat would have just sunk. x') But after a couple of hard hours, the fossil was finally loaded into the car... which couldn't move because it got stuck in the mud.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In parallel with all these events, I fought for the safety of the fragile bone, which was in a piece that broke off from the monolith. Its transportation took another day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Location: Shestakovo-1 «Malyi Yar», Kiya River, Western Siberia. 08/08/2023
Now the fossil is in the camp. After drying and removing excess rock, it will be sent to the city for tomography. And maybe after that we will find out the taxonomic affiliation of the found prehistoric animal.

controversial opinion maybe but it BEWILDERS me when people (mostly americans ime) genuinely seriously with their whole chest complain about how impossibly hard russian names are. like. do a single google search. i don't see how you can comprehend that charles = chuck and margaret = peggy but can't fathom that rodion = rodya. how is this such a huge barrier of entry for people
#and this doesnt apply to ESL ppl or any other ppl who have actual reasons like dyslexia or something#im talking about other americans who go yeah i had to stop reading bc i couldnt understand the names#how are you seeing different cultural naming conventions as an unsurpassable barrier that forces you to quit and give up on ever reading it#instead of an opportunity to learn and expand your narrow worldview?????? and over something SO SIMPLE??????????#like i know damn well yall know a katherine that goes by katie or a john that goes by jack#and those make even less sense than something like aleksey -> alyosha!#there are general rules and patterns unlike english! like the progression from aleksey -> alyosha -> alyoshka -> alyoshechka is so easy to#comprehend i dont understand how its SUCH a common complaint#i definitely understand the struggle of keeping characters straight when they have the same first name#like katerina ivanovna and katerina ospovna in t/bk etc#and of course the names in general are something you have to adjust to if youve never encountered it before! it takes a bit of thought#but its NOT FUCKING ROCKET SCIENCE and its asinine to shrug your shoulders and say welp guess im incapable of ever reading any ruslit!#like ohhh my goddd it grinds my gears so bad#bare minimum effort#anontalks#sorry for rant but i keep fucking seeing this shit and it rubs me the wrong way every time#like yeah its funny that dunya = avdotya and grushenka = agrafena#but richard = dick and elizabeth = betty so who fucking cares read the damn book
