Welcome to the MetalSandwich/Harringroveson Movie Event! I hope everyone will have a good time and make new friends as we create or appreciate the cool stuff that comes out of this event!

After a movie night with some friends on discord where we watched The Lost Boys, the idea came about to me to have a Week, seven days with a prompt for each day, with the date and prompts announced months in advance so everyone has time to make something for it!

The prompts for it will be focused on movies from the 70s/80s/90s! After an interest check and vote, the date decided was October 10th-16th! I hope everyone will have enough time and fun for this to become an annual event!

What is accepted for the event?

Anything! Fan fiction, fan art, photo edits, moodboards, fan videos, playlists, cosplays, you name it! Just let your creativity go!

Is there a minimum word count or something similar for other projects?

Not at all! Go wild, write drabbles, do anything!

I will ask that any videos include captioning and images include alt text to be considerate towards our friends with hearing and auditory processing difficulties!

How strict do we have to stick to the prompts?

Good question! With the variety and freedom of the prompts I hope you'll have plenty of wiggle room. And maybe you don't feel any movie au in particular but still want to participate? Maybe the boys just have a movie night watching a movie of your choice or they're actors! Who knows, you do! ;) I just want everyone to have fun. If you'd like any movie suggestions, let us know and we'll make a post!

I might run a little late in posting? Is that okay?

Life happens and it sucks! The dates are good for organization and giving everyone a clear schedule to try to keep to. But anything made specifically for this event will be accepted as long as it is posted sometime in October or early November. Otherwise, there's always next year!

for the cinephile byler truthers. i made the party’s modern au letterboxd accounts

in my head mike wheeler is the film bro cinephile of the party. hes a big brad pitt fan and fincher is his favorite director if you even care.. dirty dancing would be in his top 4 if he was honest. he went to see dune cause hes a scifi nerd, ended up hating it so much and complained about it to will but still gave it 2 stars cause it was pretty. did leave a very mean review. very critical rater but mostly leaves high ratings because he just doesn’t watch things he doesnt wanna see.

the thing is so good and he has a poster of it on his wall in canon so it felt right. it just feels wrong not to do ghostbusters (plus its one of my favorite movies…) and yall need to hear me out on brokeback 😭😭😭 ur telling me he wouldnt bawl his eyes out??? ur wrong. will byers is a jake gyllenhaal lover. he watches dirty dancing a lot for mike, and loves ghibli movies a lot. he cried during rain man. honest rater but doesnt take it too seriously, mostly 4/5 star ratings

rogue one because lucas has taste. its the best star wars movie, if u care. he would love how fun and goofy ghostbusters 2 is. in my head Wes Anderson is like the party’s claimed director and they all watch his movies together and do marathons because the weirdness, comedy, and emotional commentary is a perfect mix for them. so. bottle rocket. lucas’ favorite wes anderson is the grand budapest hotel if u wanted to know. he rates things pretty highly and isn’t super critical.

likes making lucas watch gone girl on valentines day and telling him shes gonna do that to him next time he annoys her. v for vendetta is her favorite romance movie and shes a big marvel fan (in a cool way. kind of .) but thor ragnarok is probably one of her fav marvels, along with spiderman far from home and iron man. i just know she watches Casino Royale and decided she hated James Bond and then ended up watching all the Daniel Craig Bonds with Mike and loved Skyfall so much. the song is on her playlist and she did cry after No Time To Die.

I just know hes a kurosawa nerd and always goes when the local theatres do very rare special showings of his movies.

she likes movies that make her feel all warm and fuzzy and hopeful. i wanted to give her breakfast club, but i think she’d honestly like sixteen candles more (even though breakfast club’s better). she cried at almost every movie in her top 4 and makes max rewatch juno with her like once a month. she gives most movies 5 stars unless she really hates them, and loves any movie thats fun to watch, even if its bad. she likes movies with pretty girls and fun colors.

The Haunted Hike of Horror: This year, your Isla Guide will lead you into a mysterious crater where an unidentified artifact emits a ghastly green flame.

Camp Creep-taceous: Camp Cretaceous opens for a teens-only Halloween party, with special guests, the Nublar Eight!

Booker vibes hard with scifi. he has so many visceral sense-memories of reading early scifi novels as the genre developed in his first decades of immortality. all the dystopia speaks to him for obvious being God's chew toy reasons, but there are times over the years when hopeful scifi stories boost him emotionally in a way no amount of good deeds or warm hugs seem to manage.

so by the time he gets stoned and goes to the movies in 1977, he's ready.

he falls hard for Han/Leia. he too was a scoundrel who fell in love with the coolest and smartest girl around who somehow found his scruffiness charming. he too came of age and put down roots amid galaxy-shaking political and social upheaval. but Star Wars was so safely cartoony in its far-away galaxy that he found he could earnestly enjoy how hopeful it was.

over the years he tore through the novels, he picked up fan magazines here and there, stopped by the occasional con. when he discovered fanfiction, hoo boy. he wrote over 100k of Han and Leia's snarky, sappy, smutty, blaster-heavy post-RotJ adventures in like the first month alone.

decades later, he very nearly had to leave the theater when Kylo Ren killed his father.

some of those same decades later, Nile. she's only 5 years old when Episode I comes out and by the time she's old enough to sit through all-ages blockbusters the prequels have been so ragged on that she doesn't bother. maybe she catches some of the original trilogy on cable at some point but she doesn't particularly connect to it.

Star Wars becomes relevant to Nile when she's in her figuring things out after high school era and she hears the guy from Attack the Block is gonna be in the new trilogy.

rip Finn's character arc and everything else that could've been so good about the sequel trilogy, but there's still some stuff to treasure there, and Nile — well.

a few months into immortality she does a marathon of the whole Skywalker saga. it's fun and silly and a way to spend a few days. the others pop in sometimes to watch with her but for the most part she's enjoying her own private screening. then she sees Rey all alone in that AT-AT carcass and suddenly she can't stop crying. Finn's storyline is just as wonderful and frustrating as she remembered, but the way he and Rey keep finding each other, keep fighting for each other — yeah.

suddenly she's WRITING. she's usually been drawn to visual arts when she has the time and interest to create, but here she is now, writing tens of thousands of words at a time, pouring her heart out through these two space orphans who have living family they just can't get back to and through a lot of galactic bullshit manage to build a new home in each other.

she starts getting regular comments from an ao3 account with a hilarious mishmash of works in a bunch of different fandoms going back years. there's some original trilogy fic on this person's account all dated the same day in 2009, and when she reads one, an intricately plotted and super romantic Han/Leia mission fic, she notices details that make it seem like it was written before the prequels came out.

the comments get longer. she and her commenter start chatting on discord, about their blorbos and fandom drama and increasingly just life. to the extent that Nile can tell anyone about her life, that is. it's nice, having an online friend.

then one day Booker fucks up. he lets a too-specific detail slip. Nile laughs in disbelief, types into discord "hey uh if I'm right about something, pick up your phone," and then she calls him.

years later, Booker will finally admit he did a little hacking to double-check it was her before dropping that purposeful slip. then he'll write Nile a lightning-hot fic where Finn introduces Rey to holonet cybersex.

I always forget how long cable scifi used to be.

"I'm gonna check out babylon 5!" Fuckin' 110 episodes and 6 (soon to be 7) movies.

The length makes sense. These shows took place over years of development and story with aging characters and were meant to be watched over the course of their life span as opposed to running a cross series marathon.

They come across as big and intimidating to me when i want to check them out. I have to take them in baby steps but my brain is like "Look at all those steps. That's fuckin' crazy!" So I hesitate a bit, but i still end up enjoying them when I get past that.

So that's cool.

Hi, I'm me, and I finally decided to put something about myself on here. I'm mostly here to quietly reblog things that amuse me but I'm hesitantly willing to try that Human Interaction thing.

I reblog a lot of cute animals because I love thar nature shit.

Big television fan, currently watching Xena, I'm only on s3 so I haven't risked interacting with the fandom much. I put a lot of effort into avoiding spoilers, I like the writers being able to surprise me.

Music is a big part of my life, I'm into a wide range of music and if you're a fan of The Gits or Klaatu you should definitely reach out because I need that kind of enrichment. I also listen to all sorts of things ranging from Pink Floyd to Mitski to Jim Croce to Echo and the Bunnymen to of Montreal to Lorde to Gordon Lightfoot to Emily's Sassy Lime. I'm always open to music recs.

I love sci-fi, especially sci-fi books written before the moon landing, there's real charm in the imagination of a time when we couldn'tsay for certain that there weren't little green men on the moon (though finding unproblematic scifi from that age is a real struggle). I also heavily enjoy modern sci-fi of course. I like fantasy too, I just lean more towards the sci-fi end of the spectrum.

I'm an avid Magic the Gathering player, been playing for about twenty years so you'll definitely see that here.

My favorite fiction trope is a good time loop, I think I've seen almost every time loop movie but it's a big world.

I video game, currently playing DAI, nearing the end of my Mass Effect-Dragon Age marathon, it's only taken me like a year and a half.

I'm a queer 90's- kid USAmerican (my sincerest apologies), this is a bigotry free zone (to the best of my ability, but I am a flawed human, feel free to call me out).

I hope you don't mind a recommendation for cowboy movies but here's some good ones: The Cowboys (1972), True Grit (1969), A Fistful Of Dollars (1964), The Guns of Fort Petticoat (1957), and shows like The Virginian and Gunsmoke are some favorites of mine. Obviously a lot of them have not aged well but they're good :)

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....

No one's ever asked me this before! I only came up with 9. It's hard to think of many that have stood the test of time, because my ADHD brain tends to become super obsessed with a piece of media for three months and then lose interest. But here goes. This is mostly gonna be stuff I have never talked about on this blog.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series) - I can't tell you why I like Buffy. I generally don't like vampire shows or any kind of "sexy monster" shows. When I'm looking for webcomics, I automatically skip over anything that has vampires in the description. And I don't like any other Joss Whedon shows. There's just something special about Buffy, I guess?

The Twilight Zone (1960s TV series) - When I was a kid, we used to watch the Twilight Zone marathon on the Scifi channel every New Years. I remember the first episode I ever watched was "Third From the Sun", and my little 8-year-old brain was blown away by the twist ending. A lot of it is super cheesy, but the series is just really nostalgic for me.

Forensic Files - I used to make fun of my sister for her "murder porn" and then I sat down and watched with her one time, and I got sucked into this story about a woman who was wrongly imprisoned for poisoning her baby (who actually died from a rare blood disease), and since my ADHD brain can't just like things a normal amount, I ended up binge watching the whole series. Now I just put it on for background noise. I'm still most interested in wrongful conviction stories.

Community (TV series) - Not much to say here. It's just really funny and I love the characters.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (Book series) - I read them as a kid and re-read them as an adult. It's wonderful world-building - a somewhat simple story that feels like it's part of a much bigger story.

Haikyuu (Anime) - Right around the time season 3 came out, Tumblr kept recommending it to me. I didn't think I would be interested, because I don't like sports, but obviously I was on the edge of my seat the entire time because Haikyuu is amazing. I've started reading the manga too, but I'm only five volumes in.

Someone Else's BL Manhua - I started reading a lot of webcomics during the pandemic. This was the first one I read, and still the one I return to the most. I don't know if I love it because it's good or it's good because I love it. I loved that my first time reading it, I genuinely didn't know what the pairings would be.

Monkey Island (PC game series) - So, like, super random, but it's this old school point-and-click adventure game series about pirates that you play by solving really out-of-the-box puzzles. I play a lot of point-and-click puzzle games, but none are as delightfully weird as Monkey Island.

Legend of Zelda (Video game series) - I feel like I don't really need to explain. They're just really well-constructed video games, and each game has its own gimmick that it makes the very most of.

by the way ive actually heard a lot of bad things about this movie and im absolutely agreed that this is corny as fuck but frankly when it comes to tos movies... im actually on board if its corny, even if the story might suck in the end. i mean granted- im hardly into the meat-meat of the movie yet. i dont doubt people slate it for NOTHING, and i presume i'll understand the problems better the more i watch (after all i am already kind of irritated with syboks existence even if i do quite like the actors vibe) but its like... hm how do i put this...

im not actually ever against, like, "nostalgia bait" stuff , i guess, and having fun with things if its kinda a) self aware enough and b) well earned. does that make sense? if it isnt taking itself too seriously and bigging itself up in a dramatic way, AND there's a solid foundation to actually have fun with then im okay with a movie that kind of only spins on the funnier, more casual moments and is somewhat self-indulgent in terms of how it panders to fans with, like, showing them all having fun camping .

the issue for me is when its either, as i said, unearned or trying to take itself too seriously... or maybe, like, when it does veer too close to flanderisation or even just spinning the wheels on the characters. its why i think a lot of chibnall doctor who doesnt realyl work when its trying tobe "fun" or "goof off with the fam" like... you guys never really did the legwork to establish these characters well enough to have that, you know?

and im not saying tos has marvellous character work- we can be honest, and say that outside of the triumvirate theyre all over the place- but i do think theyre solid enough to crry and im well okay with that yeah?

and anyway thats all to say. ive known too many pretentious types disavow all sorts of media that does kind of act a bit self-indulgent or does something fun/stupid and i dont know man i do agree in many ways but also, like, entertainment is sometimes meant to be entertaining and its hardly the worst ever if a star trek movie just fucks about a bit instead of doing some epic space opera every single time, nor does it ruin the entire franchise or work that came before it. its why i really fucking rate the voyage home- because it lets itself take the time, take the breather after the other three movies. like i understand if it does purposefully undermine something else but like... i dont know i feel like some people ironically have such a shallow mindset sometimes where theyre likt, fucking hell, its the death of all media because they were silly 1 time and did something a bit funny/had fun (esp if it isnt just to their tasts)

(adnd yeah its also like... i dont know you know osme ppl who seem to have 0 media awareness in terms of like.. yeah man you can wax pretentious gobshite all you want but also its star trek man and thats not to belittle the franchise in any way but also manage expectations of what youre going to be consuming AND also realise that its not BAD that not everything is, like, you know some high calibre art and that actually that diversity in art is kinda better for your media diet tbh like they all serve a diff purpose like- you know so unrelated its also like im sorry it reminds me of all the discourse around knives out and the such and people not taking that movie into context and whatever the fuck or ALSO how im watching bsg lright now and i know im tempering my expectations interms of what that will deliver, what it will do and even further than that the actual politics)
