A progression of sword designs done for a concept design class. The prompt was to design a series of props and gradually hone in the scope to just a single one as I polished the designs. Was told during the design process that they were reminiscent of Eldar designs from Warhammer. Is that true? I never really got into Warhammer. Too much of a money sink for a poor artist like me!
Hm, in hindsight, I really love that fish-hook design. Maybe I should take it a bit further?

✨KOA Exclusive – Persian Shamshir / Scimitar✨
🗡️Back by popular demand! Kult of Athena has a limited stock available of this classic Windlass sword which we commissioned Windlass to produce for us in a special production run🗡️
The Persian Shamshir is a recreation of this iconic sword of the Middle East – this saber is not only light and nimble, but the curved blade is optimized for decisively deep cutting and quick slashes and in skilled hands the sword is a surprisingly capable piercing weapon which can strike its target at unpredictable angles. The hilt has a comfortable grip of well-polished wood with an enlarged pommel which neatly couches against the back of the hand for a sure grip. The crossguard is made from metal with an antiqued silvered finish and the blade tang is dual-riveted into the grip for a solid overall construction.

Historical information about Yatagans-Scimitars:
Tumblr media
Yatagan is an original type of weapon, both its blade and hilt are peculiar. In most scimitars, the blade has a double bend, first from the handle up, then, approximately from the middle, down. The cutting part of the blade is not externally curved. And the inner one is concave. The Greco-Macedonian sword-cleaver makhaira (6th to 1st century BC) had such a blade; the new Spanish name for this form is "d'espada falcata" - "scythe-shaped sword". The exact origin of this type of weapon has not been clarified. He is associated with both the Etruscan world and the Greek. and with the Hellenistic. He is known in Italy, and in Spain, and in the Balkans. Such a blade can be applied both cutting and chopping and stabbing. The cutting concave part of the blade is characteristic of both South India and Nepal. The second feature of the scimitar is the shape of the handle - the presence of widely spaced sharply protruding "ears". The earliest such form is found in the bronze swords and daggers of Luristaia (Iran), dating back to 3-1 millennia BC. e. Similar ears are present on straight Levantine (Mediterranean) knives of the 15th-16th centuries. The unusual shape of such "ears" is associated with the shape of the tibia of a large animal; perhaps it had some symbolic meaning.

The Wall of the Wars
flickr
The Wall of the Wars by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: Herbert Ward's Studio in Paris looks like something from the days of Empire, as no doubt it was indeed? The selection of what appear to be weapons is extraordinary, and would appear to come from Africa and Asia, and perhaps some other continents in there for good measure. Who was Herbert Ward (a friend of Casement and an explorer of the Congo) and why would he have had such a collection? Photographer: Unknown Collection: Roger Casement Photographic Collection Date: 1899-1916 NLI Ref: NPA CAS27A You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

"An animal once considered extinct in the wild has seen its classification changed to “endangered,” signifying a remarkable comeback.  The scimitar-horned oryx has recovered its numbers thanks to the efforts of conservationists and zoos worldwide, and they can now be seen wandering the plains of Chad’s Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve after they were first reintroduced in August 2016. On December 13, the oryx, also known more simply as the scimitar oryx, officially saw its status changed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).  Between 2016 and 2022, 285 scimitar oryx have been released in the unfenced area, and a population estimate in September 2022 put the total number of the species at 575.   “The change from the previous category of Extinct in Wild is genuine, as it results from the successful re-establishment of the species in the wild,” the IUCN’s website reads. According to the Good News Network, who described the news as a “tremendous achievement,” the change of classification for the scimitar oryx is the first time any animal has moved from the “extinct in the wild” designation to “endangered.” Further research from the scientific journal Animals reveals that another animal, Przewalski’s horse, was downgraded from extinct in the wild to endangered back in 2011, but the feat is exceptionally rare regardless.  Upon hearing the news, the Zoological Society of London’s senior conservation biologist Tim Wacher said: “The return of the scimitar-horned oryx is the result of a long-term conservation effort for the species – following in-depth, careful preparation, and championed and supported by the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi.    “All Saharan antelope species are severely threatened, but this project is proof that with the right will and resources, we can secure a future for them all.”"
- Excerpt from "Scientists thrilled after horned animal once deemed extinct in wild upgraded to endangered species list: 'A tremendous achievement'" by Leo Collis.
