The Scotch Bonnet
A garment that was very popular with many Scottish men and worn by almost everyone. The Scottish Bonnet also called tam or tam o'shanter (after a character in Robert Burns poem of 1790), was woven from a single piece of blue-dyed wool and fit very tightly to the head so that it could not be blown away. In addition, the brim was very wide and offered protection from the sun and even more wind. This made it very popular with sailors and fishermen. The earliest examples date back to the 16th century.

John Paul Jones, by Carrington Bowles, 1779 (x)
Until the 19th century, they were made of natural, mostly single-coloured wool. Since, the mid of the 19th century the tam o' shanter has been produced in a wider range of fabrics, such as serge, as single colours, as well as tartan.

Even women began to wear this cap and by the First World War it became part of the Scottish Infantry uniform. Today, the bonnet is still very popular and is worn with the kilt or simply in everyday life.

Behold the blessings of Poseidon 💙
This is all from ONE shelling venture! I’ve never found this many amazing shells at once. After a storm is the best time to go shelling — I should really be thanking Zeus and Poseidon. Also, one of the most stunning skies I’ve ever seen! Orange-lit clouds on one end, rainbow descending into the sea on the other.

Finally Peppers
“Scotch Bonnets” Cedar Park, 2023 I brought all our pepper plants inside when the overnight temperatures started dropping into the 40s F and now they are almost ready to harvest! I was a little sad that I had spent so much time all year caring for them only to have the heat and cold deny us a harvest, but it looks like we’ll get to enjoy a few peppers at least. Yay!

Scotch Bonnet chilli sauce for Louise
Scotch Bonnet chilli sauce for Louise
I grew these scotch bonnets from seed – about 20 fruits all told. They were in the greenhouse but as the days grew cooler, I brought them into my kitchen to ripen – which they did. So on Louise’s birthday I harvested 10 of them and whipped up this sauce. With the remaining 10 I shall add some pineapple and mango, for a change. This is very quick & easy, and not as hot as it might be! Perhaps my…
