TV: We Are Who We Are (2020)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Producida para la cadena HBO, "We Are Who We Are" ("Somos quienes somos", aunque casi todos los episodios llevan el título de "Right Here, Right Now", "Aquí y ahora"), la serie se grabó en Venecia (mayormente), Bagnoli di Sopra y Bolonia.

I Trapped The Devil (2019)
Genre: Horror/Drama
Who’s In It: Scott Poythress, AJ Bowen, Susan Burke
Who Directed It: Josh Lobo
Plot:  A man descends into paranoia after trapping what he believes to be the devil in his basement, but things take a dark turn when his family unexpectedly arrive for Christmas.
Running Time: 82 Minutes
IMDB Score: 4.8
Metascore: 47
Why I Watched It: Honestly saw one good review for it, and it was on sale on iTunes, sometimes I’m that easy.
How I Watched It: iTunes got it for .99 cents but then forgot to watch in it the 30 days so rented it again for .99, I know please be kind to me.
Random Thoughts: I make jokes about my film selection but I actively go out and try to find smaller genre films, honestly it’s what I like to do.  I’m at a lost how many film fans just watch the big Hollywood Films, I watch most of them too but I love variety and I love smaller films in not only scale but also scope.  You see a film like this and you know someone had to really care about it and wanted to tell this story, also don’t ever thing a small budget means a bad film.
What I Liked: This film is carried by the acting, it’s a three hander and really it’s more driven by character than plot.  This is an actor movie, all three get something to do Burke maybe gets the short end but she good here as well.
This is a film where you can see they didn’t have a lot of time or money, they had one location and three actors, I give everyone credit for getting it made and for the most part it’s not a bad film it’s flawed but watchable.
It’s hard to call this a horror film maybe more of a psychological drama, really it’s an s he or isn’t in film, his the lead crazy or does he have the Devil or at least a Demon trapped. On that level it works, the film doesn’t do a lot of scary stuff they build tension and there were two things I would call creepy but mostly this is a character based film with lots of talk.
I do think some of it worked and it did make you thing, they do a good job of kind of making you uneasy, whatever is going on is weird and you get a sense that this is not going to end well.
What I Didn’t Like: It’s boring, I could say slow to be kinder but it’s both  Even at 82 minutes it’s long, once we get the set up the film just goes round and round and the odd thing here is that the mystery of is he crazy or not comes pretty clear pretty soon.  You kind of just wait for something to happen and nothing does till the very end.  Also of course a person does a very dumb thing to give us that ending.
On one level the film does do what it wants but I think this is a short film at best you hit your beats and then reveal here at 82 minutes it hits it’s one note and goes on and then repeats.  It had one idea and that’s it, if it could have opened up more and explored what was trapped it might have worked better.  Also it’s a very darkly light and very sober film.
My biggest pet peeve of course they don’t answer any questions, a lot is just left and we have to figure it out but of course we can’t cause we weren’t given enough information.  They make it vague on purpose and I get that but it’s too vague and it becomes frustrating.
Final Thoughts: I admire the idea and the acting but it just falls flat for me.
Rating: 4/10

NIGHT DRIVE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Dark Sky Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:   Russell is a former tech guy who now drives in Los Angeles while still reeling from a series of bad decisions. His life seems to be caught in a downward spiral, but things begin to look up when he is offered a business proposition from an alluring but enigmatic passenger named Charlotte. An offer he thinks is too good to turn down. A simple ride turns deadly, catapulting Russell into an even darker place, but Charlotte may be the key to a second chance he thought he’d never have. That is if he can make it through the night.
REVIEW: Meghan Leon screenwriter, and co-director, of NIGHT DRIVE serves up an engaging and entertaining tale that feels a bit like Martin Scorsese’s 1985 “After Hours” or Jonathan Demme’s 1986 film “Something Wild” reconfigured around a sci-fi premise.
I was fully immersed in the story and enjoyed the entire ride. Leon crafts two very unique and different characters that come off as a yin and yang that nicely playoff each other. What drives this film is that dynamic between the two characters of Russell and Charlotte. Russell comes off as a nice guy who basically has a good heart while Charlotte is a self-centered force of nature that is an enigma at her core. As their relationship begins to develop they both come across as likeable and interesting. The story begins to snowball and as Russell falls under Charlotte’s spell the viewer is shocked as to how she can get away with her actions, are there no consequences? Likewise, how and why does Russell continue down her pathway to ruin. In the last act Leon blows the lid off the story with a surprising source for Charlotte’s behavior. Russell is then presented with a moral choice and by the story’s end we see Russell in a new light. It’s a compact narrative that remains focused on the central characters in some skilled writing that never allows the sci-fi elements to become bigger than the characters’ stories.
Directors Bradford Baruh and Meghan Leon do an excellent job of crafting these performances with their talent to instill a lot of energy in even the simplest of scenes of two people talking in a car. There is some nice cutting and frame within those sequences that hones in on the characters and allows the viewer access and connection. The film has a nice pacing as they slowly raise the stakes and build tension and suspense. All the production elements are fine and hardly noticeable given the dynamic of the film. The film mostly takes place at night and I thought the cinematography was natural and perfect for the story. I enjoyed Michael McQuilken’s score. It supported the story's pacing in addition to the emotional moments of the film.
I loved AJ Bowen and Sophie Dalah. They create two solid characters, each standing out for their individual traits and the organic way in which they interact with each other. They feel genuine, lulling the viewer into the drama and making emotional connections. It’s one of those rare occasions where you feel like you're not just on a thriller ride, but you are on it with these characters. They craft these fascinating characters that left me wanting to know more about them and how the story might continue to evolve beyond this one night.
NIGHT DRIVE is a wonderfully written, skillfully directed, and marvelously acted independent film that hooks the viewer and serves up a solid WTF moment when it all comes together. I appreciated what they were able to achieve with a nice balance of profanity, violence and nothing more. So, you can share the ride with the tween members of the family. Some of the violent scenes might be a bit too intense for younger viewers. NIGHT DRIVE is a wickedly delightful sci-fi thriller that is an amazing independent film and I can’t wait to see what Bradford Baruh and Meghan Leon do next.

Pace had the good fortune to live a convenient four blocks distant from his place of business, at least until 1876.
