National Museums Scotland has just announced the extraordinary reconstruction of an 1,800-year-old Roman arm guard. The artifact has been described as “absolutely amazing.”
However, since its initial discovery within the Scottish Borders in 1906, the armor, shattered into over 100 pieces, languished in relative obscurity until experts meticulously reassembled it, much like a jigsaw puzzle.
This brass relic likely adorned a high-ranking Roman soldier, gleaming like gold on his arm. Currently on loan to the British Museum, you can find it at the upcoming exhibition "Legion: Life in the Roman Army" starting February 1, 2024!

Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders.
Tumblr media
David I founded Scotland’s first Cistercian monastery in 1136. Being so close to the border, Melrose Abbey suffered at English hands during the Middle Ages. Melrose’s location put it on the front line of conflict with England during the later Middle Ages.
Melrose was attacked by Edward I (1300 and 1307) and Edward II (1322) required major repairs. Also Richard II’s attacked Melrose in 1385 led to a complete rebuilding of the abbey church.
The Abbey suffered from the Protestant Reformation in 1560. Afterwards, the existing monks were allowed to stay on: the last died in 1590.
In 1996 during excavations of the abbey ruins a urn was discovered and confirmed to hold the heart of Robert the Bruce. A circular marker on the east side of the Abbey indicates the supposed final resting place.

on the side of the three-peaked eildon hill, under a hawthorn tree, thomas the rhymer met the queen of elfland and disappeared with her into the hills for seven years.
the hills are hollow, they say - not only the home of the good folk, but one of the sleeping places of arthur and his knights, whom a hapless horse dealer tried and failed to wake.
