This is a first for me - a vape commission. First problem was needing some material to attach all the embellishments. I wrapped the thin magnetic side panels with brass strips and then sealed the brass and titanium panel with a thin resin pour. I then crafted two layers of balsa wood to fit snuggly in the form. If I had to do it over, I would have picked a stronger material - like a 3D print. Next time.
I wanted a window to add depth and reveal a gear train mechanism. That alone took hours of layering vintage brass gears in the ring. I want it to look like a real machine so I try to avoid "orphan" gears. I've used glow in the dark pigment in resin under the mesh grills, brass panels and in the glass tube. Easy to charge using a UV torch. The rest is a cacophony of vintage crowns, brass tubing, miscellaneous beads, screws, pins, wire, struts and textured elements. There is even a little glass mercury switch.
I've had to take time off this year so this was a real challenge to start building again. I'm happy to answer any questions about the project. My client is happy with the result but I warned him that it is fragile.

Like a bunch of miniature kitbashers I know, I decided to hop on the bandwagon of building a bot for BillMakingStuff's new wargame Bangarang in the Gutterlands!
Bill's style and vision is so well defined - a rusty and surreal post-apocalypse. Since that's less my vibe, I wanted to take his style of scratchbuilding and combine it with my JRPG fashionista approach.
Not an easy build, though - those legs were killer! Greenstuff was needed for its posability, but a lot of patiently holding it in place and haphazard superglue was needed to stop the whole thing from collapsing under its own weight. I'll have to do some cleanup of stray glue and greenstuff before I paint it!

It's been a minute since I've posted here, but this is another WIP I've been chipping away at.
People at my FLGS have expressed interest in Necromunda but nobody has enough terrain to really fill out a table. So, I'm going to start slowly building up enough terrain for a board or two over the coming year.
I'm going for a shantytown/slum kind of vibe with these pieces and will try to include some of the macro-architecture of the hive in future pieces to really communicate the scale of a hive city. Things like large vents, pipes, and ducts.
For now though I'm just focusing on this little two story shop and dwelling combo. I'm especially proud of the little TV antenna up top and the propped open back door.
I'd love to hear any thoughts or constructive criticism!

I built some tanks from scratch. Part 1.
Tumblr media
We started with this.
Tumblr media
Took measurements and made some templates. Used those to make more.
Tumblr media
Started putting it together. Took a lot of hot glue and determination.
Tumblr media
Only had measurements for the body, and needed a turret. Guessed at measurements on the turret.
Tumblr media
Needed a gun barrel big enough for a tank. Had a few of those cheap rubbery wine corks lying around. Seemed about right for a big boom gun. Sealed it in with bits of sprue so it's push-fit. You can raise and lower the gun, though admittedly it's a bit wobbly.
Tumblr media
Needed to affix the turret to the body, and I wanted it to swivel properly. The answer? More sprues in push-fit fashion. Punched holes in top of the body and bottom of the turret. Chose a hook-shaped length of sprue and that was that. Honestly, works better than a proper tank kit.
Tumblr media
Tank needed treads, so I went back to cardboard. The corrugated kind this time. Split it open and sectioned it out.
Tumblr media
Affixed it to the sides of the tank.
Tumblr media
Now we've got the rough shape of a tank!
Tumblr media
Ran out of images for this post, so detailing in part 2.

Stone golem I made out of floral foam & wire. DO NOT recommend, floral foam is a terrible material for this, gets everywhere and is super brittle. Massive pain to make and clean, but hey it turned out nice and was cheap.
Id use foam insulation sheets or a cheap dollar store yoga block next time.

BEHOLD my tiny, 1/64th scale wooden shipping pallets.
Hand-made, from cut-down wooden coffee stir sticks, using a template I made in Illustrator. Designed for use with Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars. Don't quite have a paint color / wash / stain that I'm happy with yet.

“Not a coin or crown lies in the dragon’s lair. If not for the golden hue, you would think the dragon’s hoard a vast pool of quicksilver. But as you draw near, the surface ripples and, with an unearthly roar, it breaks as a dripping draconic form emerges to defend the boiling remains of its molten hoard.”
For Smaugust 2023 over on Instagram I am following prompt 3, molten. I knew it needed to be the dragon’s comeuppance for hoarding all that gold. Part ooze, part undead, part dragon, this is intended as a surprise boss at the end of dungeon for a lower level party of adventurers. It’s slow enough to keep away from, until it closes the distance along its trail, or locks you down in molten gold.
Knowing that this one was going to be basically covered in hot glue and UV resin, I focused more on overall shape when picking the dinosaur toys that went into this. It let me use some that had already been chopped up for other builds, and others that had defects in their plastic that I could hide under globs of gold.
