Towards the end of A Very Hungry Ghost, Scratch finally tells Molly about the Ghost Council, and the very real consequences that their ever-growing friendship will have if it becomes public knowledge. Hooray for progress! I’ve seen plenty of people talking about that scene and Molly’s reaction, which is great! It’s well deserved, and definitely one of the most heart-wrenching scenes we’ve had in the entire series thus far.
But you know what scene isn’t being talked about enough? At all?
The scene immediately following that one. The one where Molly immediately jumps in and tells Scratch that if they want to take him away, they’re going to have to go through her first, and that she’s not afraid to resort to violence.
There’s a very, very short blink-and-you-miss-it moment where Scratch makes this face
This look of complete and genuine shock, where he’s realizing that, oh....Oh, Molly really loves him, doesn’t she? She’s completely seriously willing to risk everything that she has for him, isn’t she?
And even though the Ghost Council and the Chairman are the most powerful ghosts in the entire realm, the ghosts who could easily subject him to a fate worse than death...
That’s what gives him the confidence to (internally) say, hey, yeah, maybe I can fight back. Maybe I can choose my own fate, and I can fight to stay with Molly.
It’s knowing that she cares, and she loves him enough to fight for their fate that gives him the confidence to do the same for her in return.
