Yoshiko Yamaguchi in Scandal (1950) directed by Akira Kurosawa
Another one of the many fascinating casting choices of women in Kurosawa films (and in an underrated film), Yoshiko Yamaguchi lived a surprising life compared to usual celebrities. After she retired from film in 1958, she started reporting on the Vietnam War. She would soon become politically active, specifically for pro-Palestinian causes and favoring the Palestinian Liberation Organization. In 1974, she became an elected member of the Japanese Parliament as part of the Liberal Democratic Party. She served there for 18 years and also as Vice President of the Asian Women’s Fund. She would later campaign for Japan to pay reparations for Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery under the Japanese occupation during WW2. In 2012, it was discovered she also gave concerts to Japanese Americans during their internments in the camps of California during the war for consolation and hope. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 94.
I am so glad this was addressed, by Hae Soo of all people. I can’t blame her for what happened since she was a victim of her circumstances as much as Hyun Soo, and more important of all, they were just kids.
When Moo Jin confronted Hyun Soo in the earlier episodes and caller him a monster, Hyun Soo seemed monstrous. But is it really monstrous to trap the person who once upon a time tied you to a tree and stoned you? People never forget the things that hurt them. And Hyun Soo of all people hasn’t forgotten. He’s not forgotten because he needs that knowledge to guard himself and in this case, protect the life he has built and the people he loves.
Moo Jin continues to refer to Hyun Soo as monstrous and evil and frequently berates Hyun Soo for not thinking of Hae Soo. Why did this concern for Hae Soo only come up now. Where was it when he was researching the story? Did he not realize that old wounds would be reopened? If you choose to dig up the past that you witnessed, then you also have to be prepared to accept your own role in it. If Hyun Soo feels monstrous today, it’s because Moo Jin and the others treated him like one in the past. He was called a monster, so he became one. And Moo Jin doesn’t really have any legs(?) to be standing on after the stunts he has pulled.
P.S - I know the drama has moved way past this but I had feelings and needed to express them so, here you have it.
The utter travesty of this scene.
Two people in a closet, hiding in a small enclosed space.
And not just any two people. Two people with some smoking hot tension and angst between them.
And we don’t even get a makeout?
Another missed opportunity. What have you to say for yourself PD-nim?
If this were a romance novel, we would have had so many makeouts in different places and who knows, perhaps even sexy times undercut by the presence of danger and of being found out but still happening anyway, cause ~romance~ 😤😤😤
Instead I have to use my imagination to fill in the blanks. Must I do all the things by myself? 😭
