written for @thegobletofweasleys's Jily Week 2023 day one (it's still technically july 31st where I am, I swear)! fluff/angst day, because this fandom needs a laugh every now and then. gifted to the lovely lovely @kay-elle-cee <3 playlist here!

James has always thought that Lily Evans looks exceptionally breathtaking when she’s angry.

It’s the sort of thought that he keeps shamefully locked-away in a crevice of his mind with all his other foolish Evans-induced blatherings. He wouldn’t dare say it aloud in front of his own mates, let alone Evans herself. After all, he hardly needs to hand her more reasons to dislike him. The post-OWLs incident sends a miserable shiver down his spine every time he recalls it.

Right now, the intensity in Lily’s bright green eyes, staring him down with enough force to bore a hole through his Quidditch gear, reminds him of the fiery expressions she’d worn that were precursors to all their fights last year. 

They would all begin this way: he, a bumbling prat desperate for her attention, would say something thoughtless to garner a reaction from her. Evans, prouder than a Hippogriff and sharper than a Basilisk fang, would take the bait immediately, eyes flashing with affront, and volley a creative insult his way. James would comfort himself with the thought that she never seemed to mean her insults seriously; every so often he'd catch her hiding a smile as they parted, and sometimes he could coax the occasional laugh out of her.  

But since the beginning of their sixth year, things have been different between him and Lily Evans. They’re friendly, sort of, and rarely argue these days, but it’s tenuous. Fracturable. He inevitably seems to screw up every normal conversation they have and leave an awkward tension in his wake.

Today, as Lily stares him down with an intensity he hasn't seen from her in months, James hasn't a clue what he said to garner such a strong reaction from her. 

He had been heading to the Quidditch locker room for a quick shower post-practice when Evans — an occasional spectator at their team drills, thanks to her friendship with the Gryffindor Beater, Marlene — had fallen into step with him. He immediately straightened to his full height, hyper-aware of her presence beside him. 

James, as always, is desperate to impress her.

Thankfully, she hadn't seemed to notice his apprehension. She struck up a conversation about their assignments, which soon devolved into James waxing poetic on NEWT-level Transfiguration theorems. It marked the longest civil conversation he’d had with Lily Evans in ages, and he’d thought it was going swimmingly — he was just starting to tell her about tutoring younger kids in remedial Transfiguration essentials — when she abruptly stopped walking, placed her hands on her hips, and fixed him with that fiery, indignant look he’s come to both yearn for and shrink from over the years.

Now, James gulps. Shit. What had he done now? 

“You know, Potter,” Evans begins innocuously, but her eyes flash in his direction and James knows he’s in seriously deep water. “Sometimes I have no idea what to make of you.” 

James stares blankly. 

“You can be such a prat, you know, when you go around hexing people for the fun of it and acting like you’re the king of the castle. Sometimes I want to—” and here she starts getting agitated, her pale cheeks reddening rapidly: “—to shove your head down a toilet and leave you there until all that arrogance seeps out of your stupidly large skull.” 

His heart drops instantly. He’s only half-aware that the rest of the team is long-gone into the showers, and that it’s been only him and Evans for several minutes now. 

He thinks: arrogant, bullying toe-rag.  

“But sometimes,” Lily continues in a way that he can’t describe in any way other than heated, and then says: “Sometimes I want to cut off all your air circulation.” 

That’s typical, James thinks, picturing her hands locked around his throat, staring him down with that scorching stare as he slowly perishes. 

Then: “With my mouth on your mouth.” 

His brain flatlines.

i think peter was absolutely in love and infatuated with james, to a very extreme, weird way. and i think james loved that, and did like peter a lot. in my head, they definitely made out at least more than once. i do think james and peter would snog/have heart-to-hearts, etc. which made peter keep asking james out/confessing his love, but james would always reject him as he liked peter more in a friend/occasional hookup way.

maybe it's because i'm not really in the rosekiller part of the fandom, but they're my fucked up, little ship. well them and emmeline/lily (i am a jily/jegulily shipper, but i think they also each deserved a fun little screwed up situationship)

Thanks for the tag, @celestemagnoliathewriter! I don't read much fic outside of my regular pairs, but here we go!

1. Sirius/Lily: I ship that SO HARD, as you all already know by now. Two people who love each other and have a lot in common, and a dynamic similar to Jily with less one-true-love vibes - which makes it all the more raw and delicious. Plus all the potential for triangular situations with James. Chef's kiss.

2. Jilypad (James/Lily/Sirius): Does it count as a pair? Idk. But we're in the middle of Jilypad week and I've been posting my thoughts on it. Basically see above, with extra deliciousness.

3. Snape/Narcissa: He took an Unbreakable Vow just because she asked!! And he loves/takes care of Draco. Screw Lily, that's who he really has feelings for. That's how you act towards your unrequited love. (I picture it as one-sided on behalf of him - Narcissa is oblivious, thinks of him as a really good and trusted friend, and he never does anything to break that trust. Plus he is very supportive of her relationship with Lucius. That was all my headcanons pre-DH and I'm sticking to them.)

4. Harry/OC: I've said before that I've always supported the idea of Harry being with a Muggle, someone who didn't see him as Harry Potter. But that wouldn't make for a nice wrap-up of the story, obviously. (Shout-out to a louisville slugger to both headlights by @pebblysand, who does this but with a witch from the US, which also works.)

When he thinks about what life would have been like before Azkaban it doesn’t have Tegan in it. It just had him being in a “normal relationship”.

Chapter 33:

Her lips were soft, softer than he remembered. Her breath tickled his nose as she deepened the kiss, and Sirius' chest expanded oddly at the warmth that flooded his body.

Marlene closed the space between them, rising up on her tiptoes. She wrapped her arms around him, her fingers wrapping around the back of his neck and holding him close to her like she had a million times before. Sirius melted into her arms, wrapping his around her waist like no time had passed at all. Screwing his eyes shut, he tried to regulate his breathing.

"I'm here for you, all right?" Marlene whispered. "You'll always be my person. No matter what."

Sirius' shoulders shuddered, his grip tightening around her. "I have so much I want to tell you. Things I haven't told anyone," he said, his voice cracking. "I'm drowning, Marly. And I can't breathe half the time. I, I, I feel like I'm dying."

Being around Marlene with her memories intact was easier than being around anyone else. She was a safe space for him, someone he didn't have to worry about offending or censoring himself around.

I was so mad at cockblocking-Tegan here because I wanted to see where things went, lol.

Chapter 40:

Marlene reached out, her palm pressing against his arm. "The Order will find him."

"I hope you're right," Sirius whispered.

"You have to believe it, Sirius," Marlene insisted. "Stay positive."

Sirius shook his head. "Nothing has gone right for a very long time, Marlene, so positivity isn't really my strong suit."

"Don't spiral," Marlene pressed, her gaze fierce. "I know you. I know how you operate."

Sirius heaved a sigh. "Yeah."

Marlene's hand dropped from Sirius' arm. She took a step back. Harry couldn't help but snap his attention between the two of them. Sirius turned away from her, focusing his gaze on Harry.

The fucken chemistry in the room is undeniable that even our little cabbage noticed it. They just know each other so well and fit like a puzzle. Plus, when our little oblivious cabbage notices things, you know it’s obvious!

I don’t know what it is about Blackinnon in Brumous but they just fit for me like Jily and Hinny.

Phoebe said it best: “She’s his 🦞”.

Sirius and James were not the same type of rich, I see this a lot, and a lot of people think that it’s canon, which is just, incorrect. James came from new money, Sirius came from old money.

Fleamont Potter’s business heavily, HEAVILY contributed to James’ wealth, sure Harry by our terms and by wizard terms inherited a LOT, absolutely, but from what we know from canon it’s incomparable to the Blacks fortune, it’s like comparing Draco’s and Harry’s wealth at the start of the series, you can’t.

Another thing to add is that the Most Noble and Ancient House of Black has that name for a reason, now sure, just because they’re known doesn’t mean they’re rich but we can quite confidently say they were, if you wanted to argue for the Potters’ being wealthier, you could I guess say that at the time the Blacks were a declining old money family, but they were still incredibly, INCREDIBLY wealthy.

We don’t know for certain how rich they were, or if they were richer than the Malfoys but because of how money works, old money specifically, we can say that at some point in the last few centuries(pre 1980) that they were as rich, or even richer than the Malfoys, however they weren’t as rich as them when it reached the 80’s. We can also guess they had the same amount of money or one of them had more, because Narcissa married Lucius so theoretically, Narcissa would have to be on the same level as Lucius in terms of wealth and vice versa.

Another thing we can use to calculate their wealth is their past history with house elves, from what we know from Ronald Weasley in Chamber of Secrets, a wizard/witch has to be “rolling in dough” to have a house elf, we can then look at the wall of dead house elves heads that the family had, and can make assumptions from there.

So, with all this information, we don’t have an exact amount, but, we know that even if they weren’t as wealthy as we paint them they were still known, and their opinions were highly regarded by an astounding amount, but then again, they were still insanely rich, and in terms of wealth and fame, leagues above the Potters.

The Potters were extremely wealthy, but the Blacks were loaded.

Regarding Lily/Sirius having sex without commitment or being engaged: only I consider that a bit of a betrayal for James? On both sides 😅😅😅😅. On one side is Lily, James' girlfriend who is dating another man, on the other side is Sirius, super loyal friend who is, however, screwing the woman his best friend loves (?). I don't know, as a Jily shipper it's too weird to me as a thing (unless Lily and James are in some sort of open relationship so they are both shagging other people, however I doubt Sirius would be an option). Curious to hear other interpretations!

Well I can only speak for myself and tbh I don't ever write Sirius in relationships because I headcanon him as aro, but I'm not particularly interested in Sirius/Lily in a way that betrays James. Undoubtedly, others will play around with the dynamics more (including making them a throuple!), but I personally wouldn't have much interest in writing the scenario you outline where they're betraying James. And I don't think that *any* Sirius/Lily is inherently betraying James, because the story doesn't have to be set up with James in the picture at all!

Lupin talks about James (talent for trouble) and Lily (singularly gifted witch, uncommonly kind woman) - but then he also says he recognized Harry, who is the SPITTING IMAGE of his father (Remus' best friend for years, mind you), because of Lily's eyes. Take that as you will.

Revelation about Sirius' "betrayal". It's just said that Sirius was "someone that knew" the truth about the Potter's hiding place, and was Harry's godfather.

The Shrieking Shack scene. WHY are Sirius and Peter an animagus? Does it matter?

Peter does say that James wouldn't have wanted him killed, because "he would have shown mercy". Don't know why, so far Peter was only the "boy who never let James and Sirius out of his sight"

Mid Week WIP

Here's a little snippet from a hurt/comfort one-shot I'm working on:

”Evans? What are you doing out here?”

Lily opened her eyes and quickly attempted to dry her tear streaked cheeks with her hands. She knew who the speaker was without turning to see him and she cursed herself for choosing this out of all places as her hiding spot. Of course the captain of the Gryffindor team would be showing up at the Quidditch pitch even well after their regular training hours were over. It was only natural, when talking about James bloody Potter.

The truth was that Lily had been feeling overwhelmed with everything – school stuff, family stuff, the events outside Hogwarts - and had needed a place where she could cry without the entire Gryffindor house or at very least all her dorm mates witnessing her mental breakdown. She had decided to sneak out, not even caring that it was past curfew already, and eventually found herself in the Quidditch stand where her legs seemed to have carried her own their own accord.

“What?” she said defensively. “You think only Quidditch captains get to hang out here whenever they feel like it?”

Here's also a snippet from my modern Jily at a TS concert AU because I can't resist:

“So, what about your favorite Taylor album?” Lily asked. “Is it Red? You know, since you told me you became a fan when Red TV came out.”

For some reason that question seemed to amuse James slightly. “As a matter of fact, it isn’t. I mean, sure, it’s probably in my top three, but… at the moment my go to album is Lover.”

“Really? Sorry, I was just a bit surprised… but screw the stereotypes, right?“

“Fucking right. I know many would consider that a weird choice for me but I’ve always thought it has so many bangers. Like, c’mon, who can listen to Paper Rings without getting into a better mood? And then there’s Cruel Summer? Death By A Thousand Cuts? And London Boy is exactly the kind of song I’d want to have in the background if I was introduced on TV or something… And…”

“And next you’re going to tell me you also love Me!” Lily teased him.

James crossed his arms. “D’oh! What is up with people hating that song? There’s nothing wrong with a little self love. And say with you want, it makes for a wonderful party song on a Friday night after you’ve worked your arse off the whole week.”

For the wip game snippet from boots??? And the revenge sweetness??? I’m intrigued

Okay I am currently somewhat overwhelmed by the level of love Brown Boots & Breakfast Bagels has been receiving. I woke up to SIX comments this morning after posting chapter 3 last night. Which to me is absolutely insane. So here's a little snippet from the upcoming chapter 4 (which may or may not come out later today 😉).

“You say it like I don’t already know all this Ali. I want a serious relationship! I want someone who I’m happy to come home to everynight and eat dinner with. I want to go to bed feeling safe and warm and loved and all the shit you’ve got with Frank. I’ve tried. I tried with Benji, I tried with Amos-” “No Lily. You didn’t.” Alice interrupted sternly. “You picked men who weren’t ready for serious relationships. You picked men in their mid twenties who still act like teenagers. You went on a few dates and you shagged them. You wanted to fix them up the way you wanted but they didn’t want to be fixed. And when they didn’t want that you didn’t want them. So you dropped them and moved onto the next thing or went back to Snape for a pity fuck. I love you Lily I do. But you’re not going to give Caradoc a proper chance until you’ve settled whatever it was with James. For whatever reason you opened up and trusted James and you feel like he’s thrown it back in your face. You’re angry and you’re hurt. I can understand that. But you don’t just get hurt and move on. You get hurt and try to cause more hurt or shut down. You gotta rip the plaster off this time girl. Confront James, have it out with him and then seriously give it a go with Caradoc. Fuck this ‘don’t screw the crew rule’. If it works out, that’s great. If it doesn’t it just doesn't. He’s already shown he can be mature about it after all the times you’ve rejected him previously. You know how to remain professional so just take the bloody chance will you. You deserve to be happy Lily more than anyone I know. But being happy starts with YOU.” 

As for Revenge Tastes Sweeter. I've hit a bit of a slump with that. I originally planned to have a fair amount written before I started to publish it, but I think I might just roll with it and start publishing it because clearly I can be motivated to write by kudos and comments 🤣

It's an extension/sequel to one of the pieces I wrote for Jilytober Fest, Bad Taste. It's essentially a Jily fake dating fic which I only wrote because @joyseuphoria suggested it. I know I've shared a snippet of it previously but I can't for the life of me find the post (can you tell I'm bad at tagging things? I'm trying to work on that). So here it is again:

James stepped forward and bent down to kiss Lily gently on the lips. The hem of her school skirt touched him just below the knee. Her lips were soft and melded nicely with his. Though only briefly, before he pulled away. She looked up at him slightly disappointed.  “What are you doing with your hands Potter?”  James looked down at his hands which he’d firmly put back into his pockets prior to kissing her. “What am I supposed to do with them?”  “Oh I don’t know. Touch my face? The small of my back? Something other than just shoved in your pockets.” Lily suggested.  “Well I don’t know do I? I don’t exactly want a hexing for putting my hands somewhere they shouldn’t be.” He replied exasperated. 

So maybe two fic chapters will be coming out this weekend... watch this space.

All right. James liked a challenge. If she wanted him to keep up, he would.

It was with this Lily that he’d fucked it. And, thing was, stone was easier to mend than smoke. But knowing all this, it was still not in his nature to give up, especially now that the smoke had taken shape, and he could see into it like a clouded vision, and know how he’d screwed it up, and start to consider how he could lend substance to his apology beyond just sincerity

In the process, James’s gaze flicked up to meet Lily’s, and she felt it with the force of a physical blow. He looked incandescent — or perhaps he was always lit from within like so, rising and falling, crackling and subsiding, like a fire in the hearth. Something like home.

35. What's your favorite fic you've posted? >>I love For the Love of the Game. That one was really important to me when I was writing and posting it. As well as the Toll of Silence. Other then that I love Boys Night Out and Hey, Neighbor. Those two are fun, light, and humorous and are just so fun to write. I really do love seeing goofball Rowan come out, because he can be a little asshole if he wants to. So its a lot of fun playing with that part of his character. And Lorcan. Even if I haven't updated those last two fics in a hot minute, I really do like them.

59. Have you participated in any fic events/writing challenges?  If yes, what were they and did you enjoy them? >>Other than Rowaelin Month events and some Jily events, not really. But when I do, it's always fun because you see a bigger influx of support come out for the ships/characters you like and love, so that's always really inspiring. I like writing challenges though, so when I find them, I always try to participate.

77. Why do you enjoy writing fanfiction? >>Sometimes I have no idea why I still do this. But a lot of why I write fic comes from wanting to explore characters I don't want to say good-bye to. I first wrote Jily ages ago because I wanted to know these characters and see more of them since canon screwed us, lol. And then when I got back to writing Rowaelin and sjm, I just wanted to write. I was struggling with my OG stuff, I was lonely. I was tired. And I just wanted to test my writing. So a lot of why I'm still here is the community, because even if I don't get many notes, I love the other creators here and the people I've met.
